There's a "Snake Farm" just a few miles north of me. I wonder if it's the same one?

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Oh thanks Robin! I've got this one marked down on my calendar as a must see LOL. I love Mike Rowe's show especially when we works with animals. The alligator farm last night was a hoot! Mike apparently does NOT like to get nipped by gators! :D
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Cool! Tivo'd and ready to go.
I have to admit Discovery has really been coming up with some good shows and I find I watch it more than any of the "network" channels anymore. (Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch, American Chopper (originally), Man vs. Wild (really good if you haven't seen it), etc.)

You're in the UK? Yup, that would be 1 am, you're 5 hours ahead of me.
Edit: I can't do simple math before a cup of coffee - five hours ahead would be 2 am - sorry!

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
did you see the one with the water snakes?!?! Mike Rowe was hilarious when he was getting bit and musked!!
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Ohhhh my husband Mike loves that Man vs Wild show! The whole family loves the Discovery Channel around here and Mike Rowe and his nutty antics on Dirty Jobs is always good for a laugh. I do love though how Mike is really in the end honoring those folks among us that do some pretty interesting albeit dirty jobs. :)

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Iam so excited for this episode now. Even though Iam leaving that day and heading to North Carolina. But I hope we make it to a Hotel before then so I can watch it. If not Iam going to have to record it and wait till I get back.
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I can't wait to watch it. His reaction to the biting and musking of those water snakes was hilarious. I can't imagine how he'll respond to big burms and tics.
Hopefully, they don't musk or bite him :D .

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Don't forget about this show tonight folks! Should be a huge laugh. :D

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Members on another forum are hoping that he gets mauled, because of his poor handling skills with the albino burm. I don't know who at that snake farm taught him to grab the snakes like that. :colbert:

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not a regular viewer of the show, but this one is definitely a "cant miss."

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Wow. The 17' retic is gorgeous. Everyone watching?
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
just started watching...20 minutes late :(
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I'm watching. Gorgeous snakes, I'm definitely never keeping giants. Don't want to deal with that poo and pee....nuh uh not for me.
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I am...yea all the giants were. But (and I don't own any giants) but what was wrong with how the moved them? (from a previous poster about another forum being ticked)
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I'm watching! Wondering what they are going to do with the three retics and why they put all three of them in to a much smaller enclosure.... and now are putting the boa's in to the retic's old enclosure.
Ummm maybe I'm missing something... but aren't they missing the whole "sanitizing" thing with the old retic enclosure before putting the boa's in there...
EDIT:
Why in the world do they have rattle snakes housed with rat snakes and bull snakes!?!?!?!? All those snakes in that small hole in the ground that they call a pit. WOW. I don't know what to say.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
i live in austin which is near the snake farm. i went a couple month ago. the collection of snakes is amazing that have tons of snakes, mambas everything. but the almost all the snakes were in horrible or pretty bad condition. its a cool place to see stuff the have monkeys too but very bad care for the animals especially one ball python i saw. the worst was the snake pit were they had tons of snakes together and people tosing money at them kinda sad really. Anyway just kinda andry about the place.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Well they did say that it was under new ownership(that's why it was closed) so HOPEFULLY the new owners will get everything up to snuff.
They had a couple nice ball pythons to start. The snakes seemed in good weight(one might have been fat, but I'm not used to giants).
I think that smaller pen they moved the retics to they referred to as a 'holding pen' so they wouldn't be leaving them there.
They might have sanitized and all, and they just didn't show it. Remember the editting. They want the most footage of Mike dodging snakes and gators.
I wish they'd use VENOMOUS... not poisonous as the term.
Loved the show though.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
LOL, I just got done watching it. Imagine my surprise when it was actually somewhere I've been. LOL
Hehe, my parents were visiting me when I was living in San Antonio, and we stopped just for kicks while on the way back to SA from touristy sightseeing in Gruene, TX.
Small world.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I've actually sold them several animals, mostly monitors. Eric the owner is Wyatts old partner from tw international. From what I've heard they need a lot of work and have grand plans but its going to take a bunch of money......
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
As an additional comment to the conditions, I do agree. It was a few years ago I was there and the conditions were less than ideal.
Hopefully the new owners will do some upgrading.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Ok...is it just me but the roller coaster show that is on right now...is the host an idiot or what? This wasn't what I expected as the really haven't shown how the roller coaster is / was built but just snippets of the host being stupid.
Anyway I am changing the channel.
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Sean... I too turned the roller coaster show off. I thought the host was being a little over dramatic about being up in the air... or really anything over a foot off the ground. I was hoping the show was going to be a bit different since I too like those kind of building shows. Sadly this one let me down.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I was kinda suprised at how they kinda lunged at teh snakes... I've never dealt with giants, but they seemed to kinda over do it. It's cool that they are working to fix it up. It will be really nice eventually.
I'm watching the roller coaster show as well. I'm in school for architectural engineering (which is what the host graduated with a degree in). I watched the first show he was doing...I forget what it's called, but it's the same kind of thing. Showing how the things are being built. His feaking out about heights would seem pretty extreme, but compared to the first shows he did, he's gotten better. He talked on part of one about how he was absolutly terrified of heights. I like the host, but he reminds me of alot of the guys I'm in school with, so I guess that has alot to do with it :P

They were restraining them by grabbing them behind the head. Even a mean snake shouldn't be held that way. Extremely stressful, hence the need to musk, and not a way to tame them down.

Got it...Thanks for clarifying
...so how do those of you with "fiesty" giants move them?
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Many of the snakes there were restraining like that didn't even seem aggressive. I know Mike said something about the red tail hissing at him, but they seemed pretty docile. None of the snakes even looked at them when they crawled in the cage or opened the tubs. Like I said, I've only ever dealt with my little ball python, so I don't know how a retic or burm act normally, but they just didn't seem aggressive... ?

HASENT STARTED YET IN CALIFORNIA YOU GUYS KILLED IT FOR ME!! haha 40min till it starts!

I am sure that all keepers of giants do it their own ways, whether they are "correct" or not. I try to give the snake a bit of slack by leaving some room behind its head so it isn't restrained. But I cannot leave to much room or otherwise the snake can have too much of a strike range. Other than that, they shouldn't be squeezed. Retics, afrocks, and scrubs DO NOT tolerate squeezing as much as burms do. Therefore, restraining them will cause them to constrict, squirm, musk, urinate, etc.

I didn't see any cues for aggression, besides that the tiger retic was in shed. So I guess it was just from past experience.

Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
Ya I didnt really care too much for the way they were grabbing the boas. It really didnt seem necessary at all! Thank god my mom didnt see that because it probably would have freaked her out about my baby colombian. I dont have any experience with retics but I have seen some pretty moody ones on animal planet, and Ive heard they can be kind of aggressive so I wasnt too surprised to see them taking precautions with those. Nonetheless it was nice to see all the snakes. Kinda sucked there were 0 snakes the second 30 minutes of the show though. I turned it on about 10 minutes into it or so when they had the piebald out, which was pretty cool looking. Interesting show though. I dont really care for too much of the stuff that comes on discovery.
edit: I did notice a few of the snakes in blue so maybe thats why they were being so careful.
-
Re: Dirty Jobs - July 10th
I really enjoyed it, especially the cute balls in the beginning. Maybe the giants weren't used to being handled... but I was surprised at well that they grabbed the redtails the same way as the retics. I love Mike Rowe though, and his reactions are always great.
And I'm laughing my ass off about the comments towards the roller coaster guy, because I thought he was a total wussy little fairy and I fell asleep while watching. :D

That's the place Judy! :)
It's been on the market for several years now, and it looks like the new owners are doing a great job! Even my hub, that notices nothing cosmetic...
*coughs - male* Said, "Wow, it looks so much cleaner"....
So hopefully they will continue to renovate and update all the enclosures etc...
ps. I don't know if they still have it, but there was the sweeeeeetest male Sulcata there.... looked like a 1/2 size VW Bug! :P
