Say what?
Just when I thought I understood a little about genetics, a snake comes along to humble you...
Paradox Albino
I wouldn't even call this a paradox in the typical sense. It looks more like a Piebald thing going on, and apparently they got two of these in the clutch. Cool stuff...

Re: Say what?
It's a paradox. Part normal coloration and part albino. They randomly pop up from time to time. Personally, I think they are butt ugly though.

Re: Say what?
good lord. i swear, they never cease to amaze me! how did that happen?! :O

I think it looks pretty cool, but where have you seen this before? All of the paradox albinos that I've ever seen just looked like an albino with a black smudge or smudges, but not normal coloration throughout the snake.

Re: Say what?
I'll really blow your mind.... some paradox stuff isn't the homo form of the gene. Me and Cue were talking about that. How that paradox albino could really be a het albino and not a homogeneous albino thats the cool part. Sometimes the recessive genes influence some of the cell development and and then the wild type half takes over. :D:D:D
So for all we know the Het to Het breeding produced 2 100% het albinos (paradox) and 1 poss het albino and they missed on their odds. :D
How ya like them apples :D

Re: Say what?
That's right, didn't Ralph produce a homo looking snake last year from a het breeding? I think it was a clown or caramel...

Re: Say what?
hmmm.. and the only way to prove if its het or homo would be to breed it then? how would you be able to tell if its het or homo if both a het and a homo could produce visible morph offspring? either way.. I like it. gimme gimme gimme. :D

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that! It's cool, but the thought that entered my mind was 'Ball Python...Dalmation?'

If you bred it to a visual albino (homo) to this snake and hatched out any normals, then it would be proven as a het rather than a homo...because two homogoyzous albinos bred together would produce all albino babies.

Ok.
Whaaaaaaaaat :P
I like it........
and junk! ;)

Re: Say what?
I usually like the paradox albinos, this time I have to say I am not all that enamored with that one, too much dark on it.
-
Re: Say what?
Going strictly on appearance, I wouldn't say that's a "pretty" snake...but it IS fascinating, in my opinion...on so many different levels. And I have the feeling that it will grow into a very striking (no pun intended!) adult. I would LOVE to have a snake like that to study and admire both visually and genetically.

Re: Say what?
Dirty, ugly looking.... but it certainly is carrying some valuable genetics! :)

Re: Say what?
Am I the only one that thinks that snake is beautiful? The patterns are just fascinating. Of course I can stare at my normal bps for hours just examining every pretty little spot :P

I wouldn't say beautiful, but I definitely think it's pretty cool looking! Much better than the regular paradox albinos, and it would probably be one of my most stared at snakes if I owned it. :)
And if it is genetic, imagine a super pastel paradox albino. :sunny:

Re: Say what?
I think its pretty damn cool! I wouldn't throw it out of bed (or whatever the proper term is for turning down a snake) :) And no, I don't sleep with my snakes...Most of the time.

Why does this remind me of an old 80s tune by King Missile. Detachable what? :D

Great song!
People sometimes tell me I should get it permanently attached,
but I don't know.

"Sometimes it's a PITA, but I like my DP." :8:
Man, they just don't write songs like that anymore...

Monster ringer. lol. I wouldnt mind having it.

Re: Say what?
Interesting pic...I guess this is what cue meant when that
"Another interesting tidbit is that a paradox albino that has a great amount of "normal" pattern might be genetically a het[erozygous] albino and not a homo[zygous] albino"
Nice to get a visual to accompany it.

That's right...and I pointed that out in the previous thread. But remember that any breeding experiment really only proves the genotype of the cells in the germ line. :) It says nothing about the genotypes of different somatic cells in the body.

Recessive genes by the strictest definition need two copies in order to manifest themselves in the phenotype. Biochemically we know standard albinos as having an inborn error in the metabolism of melanin. Having only one recessive allele isn't going to produce an albino appearance because the albino appearance isn't really the result of having anything new...instead it results from the absence of a functional tryosinase gene on both chromsomes.
I suppose that during development that the cell could use only one copy of the tyrosinase gene and the later find out that it had a functional reserve copy....but I find this highly unlikely...I'd think we see heterozygous albinos showing the albino phenotype more.....and then we classify albino as a dominant mutation. It could also be some kind of messed up transcriptional regulation of the tryosinase loci.....but again I doubt it.....
Instead I think this is some sort of chimerism or mosaicism.

So do I. I think they look like they have a disease.. But that is just my opinion

Re: Say what?
:colbert: I disagree all the way baby. Paradox albino has to be one of the coolest morphs. They look like the Bp colored itself albino and got cought in the rain and some of the paint had washed off

That does seem to fit in. If it is a chimera of an albino and non albino sibling, depending on the parentage and which sibling is responsible for the reproductive parts it's possible the paradox might not even breed as a het albino.

I was hoping someone would chime in with a plausible explanation. I've read about chimerism, but this is the first I've heard about mosaicism. Thanks for the info!
