Do you like where you live ?
I used to live in Eau Claire, Wi but i recently moved to Live Oak ,Fl. I have never have left the midwest before so i had to get out and do something so my aand my girlfriend got jobs down here over the internet and moved. Sorry to all you florida people but i hate it. I originaly planed to move to Oregon but some friends of mine dont realy like it there either they say lots of drugs and homeless. Not exactly my idea of a place i want to make my forever home. Today I watched a show on travel channel. Now i think i want to move to Montana. Im an outdoors type i like Hikeing, camping(not the sissy car camping i meen real backpacking)fishing and hunting. Things that florida just dosent have that many opertunities for. I plan to do a little deap sea fishing but that about it.
So tell me do you like where you live and why?

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live wherever the Air Force sends us. And I always like it. Not because there aren't downsides to anyplace we can go...but because there are always UPsides to anyplace we can live...and I choose to find and focus on those benefits. Some places I like more than others....but I don't think I'll ever "hate" where I live.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in South Carolina. The south has its downsides (people who make some of the stereotypes valid, extreme humidity, hardly any actual "winter") but if I moved I would miss the hospitality and the quiet. It's not exactly ideal for a young person though -- unless you dig country music, there are no fun bars to go to, and not a whole lot else to do, except for outdoor activities. I lived in Savannah last year and it was a wonderful place to be, had everything I was looking for... Only problem is it's extremely expensive. 200 grand for a starter home? Uhhh I don't think so. :)

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in Keystone Heights Florida. I love Florida. Sorry. I don't take offense at you saying you hate it here though, since you aren't saying it sucks, but that you don't like it.
This is a TINY town(we have TWO traffic lights, but we put up the 2nd one just to be snooty honestly) and people are generally friendly if they gossip way too much. We have a few fast food spots, a couple of resturants, and gas stations. It's just right. Mind you, most of the residants think I insane for keeping snakes and don't even mention the 5 foot long carnivorous lizards!! But all in all, I like it.
Florida also makes it possible ot have outdoor cages for those lizards, and later I guess the tortoise. I HATE the cold, I have fibro, so cold really does kill me. As long as I have AC to keep the worst of the heat away I can deal quite well. We're far enough inland that most of the hurricanes are simply REALLY bad storms to us(Think 70+ mph winds and torrential downpour!) but no flooding for me, I'm high and dry.
So I like it here, I own my home and land, and I'm thinking of moving but only to up the road a little ways in the next few years.
If I moved... I dunno where I'd even think of going to. Besides.. I can DRIVE to DAYTONA!! WhooO!

Re: Do you like where you live ?
i like where i live, for the most part. it is a pretty bad town though. a lot of wannabe mac dres or something. down the street from me is kind of "the ghetto". ive been jacked a couple times this year. one time a couple guys just pulled over and robbed me and 3 of my friends downtown. just saturday we were at the skatepark and while we were on the hill getting water a group of 15 black kids hopped the fence and stole our back pack. me and about 10 other skaters chased em down and they chucked the backpack but kept the camera so we chased them over a fence where they through the camera. and after a big standoff with lots of yelling and aggressiveness (no fighting though) they all got in one car and sped away. hahahahah.
oh, im in antioch california by the way. the "yay area"! hahahahahah

I live in Va and I gotta say...I kinda like it alot!
I have awesome neighbors and pretty cool friends.
Bu if I moved anywhere else...which I doubt will happen since my kids have roots here...I would go to Md.
I was born there and have family there also.
plus I hear there is a great ball python breeder in Md!

I love Texas, I don't want to live anywhere else. I've lived in Kentucky and South Carolina, but Texas is where my heart is.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
New Hampshire has more trees than I think any other state besides Maine.
I find that I cannot be happy anywhere that isn't insanely green all summer long. Even if I drive down to Connecticut I start noticing that the leaves are not as deep green color as the types we have up North. I need the green!
I'm from this general area and will probably never leave, except to perhaps go to the Pacific NorthWest like Washington state or British Columbia.

Well I already did a thread like this, so here are some of the reasons I love living in DFW....I've thought of several more since then!

Oooooh, that thread reminds me of how pretty a view fishmommy has. :D

I agree, happiness comes from within. You will enjoy life more if you concentrate on the things you enjoy(positive) and less on the things you don't like(negative) or miss. That being said I live in sunny SoCali and I love it. I grew up in Long Island NY and loved it there too but L.A. Has the best weather you could ask for. I have lots of family in Florida and like it there too. Great place for reptiles.

I can totally understand about the kids though.
Sara would be totally destroyed if we moved away.
She was born in Floida (as was Kyle) but they have lived here since she was 1 and he was 2 months.
And Cait was born here in F'burg.
It's their home.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I don't blame you for wanting to move into the North West. It is Beautiful here, and if you like the outdoors, we have lots of open spaces.
I live in Coeurd'alene/Post Falls, Idaho. Its north near the Idaho/ Montana border.
This is the only place I will ever live, we moved here from Virginia when I was little and I have been to many many places and I can't find anything even close to North Idaho.
Montana is gorgeous, especially the Glacier Park area. I like eastern Montana better than Western Montana.
Oregon there is alot of nothing when you are on the western side, just desert, farm land and highway. The west side of the state is beautiful, it just depends on where you live.
If you want a place where you can enjoy the outdoors and everything that comes with it Idaho is perfect. Here is my thread of some pics I took in Downtown Coeurdalene. Oh and we have LOTS of water, everywhere there are huge lakes and rivers.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
i am originally from cleveland, ohio. so i grew up a Browns/Indians/Cavs fan. when i got older i liked Ohio State. Then the only place i can find my major that isn't too far away is at a school that is 10 miles away from the that school up north. (some of you might understand) . so here i am in michigan. i don't hate it as much as i used to but now i just urge to get away. i have one more year of undergrad then im off to arizona state university!!!!
i used to live in AZ when i was younger, only for 2 years, but i miss it soooooo much. i used to live in scottsdale, and everything out there is so beautiful, i can't wait to go back.
plus all the nice reptiles out there....

I live in Clifton, NJ.
I like it, I would rather live on a farm somwhere, but my wife is from around here and my kids were both born here in NJ...so apparently my family has taken root here.
I hate winter and high property taxes, but it is convienent to NYC where I commute to every day.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I'm in Rockford, Il. right now. BOY DO I HATE IT! The things you do for love. I was born and raised in St. Louis, hated that too! Can't stand city living. My favorite place was surrounded by almost 400 acres of thick woodland outside Desoto Mo. I loved it. Creek running 20ft. behind the house,I could go herping every day of the week in warm weather. Or go to the local reserve and hike for hours with my dogs!! I am a total misfit here. The neighbors take one look and steer clear. We live in one of the better nieghborhoods, everyone around here is way too uptight. They are always worried about the lawn or what the next door neighbor might think. White slacks driving down the street on their golf carts!!
Me, I'm western boots, worn jeans and sleeveless tee shirt. Kelly gave up on trying to civilize me!!:D

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in Barrie, Ontario Canada. Coming from an Air Force family I moved around almost every 4 years when I was younger, now they are retired and have settled into Barrie, I love it here close to big city of Toronto but yet closer to cottage :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:ry and the beaches.
I'll call Barrie home for the rest of my life hopefully.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
Yes, I live in Southern California, I was born here. Lots of herp lovers here. I have yet to visit LLL (2 hours ride). I visit Prehisotric Pets every once in awhile.
But I sure wish in the summers, I lived in Florida, specifically Daytona :)

Re: Do you like where you live ?
Wow, What a great thread I started. I loved all of your responses.
Ok i dont hate florida (that much) I try to focus on the good but I get called a yankee
(witch i dont mind because hey i am but still its intended to be negative so i dont appreciate it)
, theres garbage every where ( i have to pick up my front lawn twice a day)
the fishing is poor and there is no frisbee golf within a 2 hour drive so im left in the house playing video games and checking in on my snakes. The only thing i think i like is chasing anoles around in the yard with my camera.Oh and the Atlantic i never saw that before i moved. Winter i can maybe go hiking but the summer is way to hot.
I will be in Daytona come August so hey thats something good right.
Wisconsin will always be home a place where nature is bountiful, for one week a year everyone wears blaze orange and you can buy fishing bait at every gas station.
PS. I know my sentance and paragraph structure is bad to say the least

Re: Do you like where you live ?
now i live about 40 minutes south of eau claire. i really don't like it much. but, this is where matt is, so.....
i'm from washington. i lived in kelso (southern wa) until about 9th grade. that was okay i guess.
but then i moved up north to everett which is just above seattle. that i loved. i miss it very much. it's got it's ups and downs like any other place. i liked it though because it was close to seattle without actually being there. so not quite as much crime, drugs, etc. you can always find something to do. there are so many trees everywhere! i love it! last year, when i visited in the spring, i got off the plane and i was in heaven! it was 75 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, and a gentle breeze blowing the dogwood fluffs (not sure what they're actually called!) around. and it smelled so good!!! i love washington in the spring! and it's not far away from wilderness. you know, real wilderness... lol. i think it was about an hour and a half drive to get to my fave camping spot. a nice little spot on a creek fed by a glacier... last time we went, we were told there were cougar sightings recently so watch out!!! lol. real camping!!! anyways, that's home for me!

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in the Berkshires--in Western Massachusetts. It's really beautiful here, but I find that the people up here are a little standoffish. We also have lots of second home owners in my town (we're a very small New England town) during weekends year-round and they consume us in the summer. The kids who are native to our town tend to either do really well for themselves and move away or stay stuck here forever. I really feel that it's kinda a "rut" town, so I'm not really content here.
However, I'm probably going to stay in New England into the foreseeable future as I find I like it in general. I grew up in Florida and I can say that I've NEVER felt the urge to go back. Talk about humid, flat and visually the same from Tallahassee to Miami...no thanks. :) I go back occasionally to visit my grandparents, aunts and uncles down there but that's about it!

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in Baltimore City, Maryland. I HATE IT! I like parts of Maryland... more of the western parts. I'm not a city kind of girl. Also where I live you don't want to look at people "the wrong way" or bump in to them... people flip out and kill others over the littlest things here. You are fair game to get shot if you do one of the two I just said above... no kidding! I don't understand why people from nice parts of Cali move here. I know I'm about to move out of the city very soon and I hope I never have to move back here.
"This culture of violence ... is what sets Baltimore apart from some other areas," said Deputy Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III. "This is just not guys arguing over multi-kilo drug deals. It's not guys arguing over who is going to stand on what corner. They will shoot and kill each other over slights in a carryout store, or the lyrics in a rap song, or an argument over a girl."

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I absolutely love where we live. We rent a farmhouse and have an absentee landlord. It is perfect; we get 300+ acres to play around on while not having to pay any land tax ;) Of course we want to own our own land/farm eventually but are in no hurry because this is a great arrangement.

One negative, is the SNOW in winter. We can get stranded at home for a few hours every winter. You know those images of nearby Buffalo that you see on the world news where it is buried in ten feet? Add a few more feet and you have our place in the winter.. if i did not have to start driving in the stuff this year, I would mind it a lot less.. could always take the snowmobile to work (people do..)Other than that.. I am so at home in the woods. I grew up in Buffalo but we would go out to this area on weekends to a club hunting cabin; I knew in my blood that I would live out here one day; now my fiance and I both love it here. Give me cool deciduous forests; creeks and gullies full of life; deer and other critters scampering in your path.. this is paradise.

Living in Connecticut my whole life I can't wait to move out west some day, maybe after the kids get out of High Schools (the're only in grade school now!).
Whenever there are big storms coming I notice on the radar they tend to split at the Hudson River in NY and go south (to New Jersey) and north (to Massachusetts). I DO NOT envy anyone living in western Mass, the weather looks to get really bad often. Connecticut is know for being a very safe place to live weather wise.
Connecticut has hight taxes, because much of it is a suburb of NY city. Manufacturing is leaving about as fast as they can get a boat to China! The people tend to be standoffish also.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in Seaside, CA. I been back and forth between here and Baltimore MD. I love it here, perfect weather, perfect scenery, a lil boring but it works out. Something's always going on around here, golfing at Pebble Beach, races at Laguna Seca etc etc. Lots of tourism.. prolly moving back to Baltimore next year, I like it out there too. It's hella different than Cali, but there's some similarities.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in Phoenix, AZ. Summers are death, it's horribly polluted, nobody knows how to drive, and car theft is so commonplace most people consider it a mere annoyance. (YAY for lo-jack on our new car!).
Yeah, not a big fan. Looking forward to heading NW one of these days and fording the river along the Oregon Trail! ;) (Oooh, rain!)

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I live in Oklahoma and I enjoy it for the most part. I live in Oklahoma City, so there's plenty of places to go and hang out with friends, and if I want some 'me' time, there is always the option of going fishing and/or horseback riding at a friends house, both being less than 30 min away. And if I want the real 'big city fun' Dallas is only 3 hrs away,(which includes the DFW airport, since OKC airport doesn't seem to like booking 1 way flights, darn you connecting flights!!!)

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I am a firm believer in making your own destiny :) I grew up in an ugly part of Buffalo.. it was OK back then but now, a mere 15 years or so later, it is becoming "ghetto." I would not feel safe walking the streets back there in broad daylight. :( My mom has to suffer through having a neighbor whose 4 pitbulls bark incessantly; nothing against the breed, but the owners are morons; I never, Ever, see those dogs go otside. I shudder at the thought of what their house is like inside.. Nope. I can Not have neighbors close by me. A mere visit to the city grates on my every nerve. I would rather live in a shotgun shack out here, than in a mansion in an urban or suburban area.
So in 2001, when Mark and I got together, we grabbed a Penny Saver and would spend nights driving out into the southern tier (rural area) to make ourselves find something. We lived in a different place for about a year; it was nice.. privacy and views, but our landlord was a psycho and selling thr house; showing it to strangers while we were not home! We feared for the safety of our belongings with weirdos traipsing through out stuff, so I called, made an appointment with our now-landlord, and bingo. :)
He has a long commute; to and from Buffalo daily. My work is right in town and in the summer I can get to work in ten minutes!
But everyone should be forced to live in a true ghetto for at least a month of your lives. I did, back when mark and I got together; he lived in a horrific part of town! You could not leave your car out on the street overnight; it'd be gone or stripped. Bullet shells and used syringes (with needles!) were commonplace in the sidewalks. True, there were some interesting characters that Mark got along with, but they would stab you in the back as soon as say hello. Nope! It did give me a firm appreciation for where I live now.. I never, ever take it for granted.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
I don't like my house for the sheer fact that my wife and I have quickly outgrown in it 5yrs. It pretty much hampers any thoughts of having the private things we want such as a library, office/computer area, (larger better layed out) reptile area, etc. I live in a small town but grew up in the country on a farm. I don't mind being "in town" because I enjoy the services that I could not get if we lived in a more rural area. That said I do little in our town, even when going to and from work I don't pass through much of it since its back roads. On a larger scale...Michigan is a beautiful state and I have likes and dislikes about the climate. It seems like winter winter is always longer than the summer (or construction season as some know). I am grateful however that I have never seen a flood, hurricane, large scale forest fire, etc. If I had it my way I'd want to live someplace where the winter temps where still warm enough to ride the cycle most of it. However that usually means scorching summers which I could do without also. It gets plenty hot enough here as it is! I don't see us ever being able to leave MI unless some big job opportunity came up for my wife or I so I'll have to be content with what I have in that regard. :)
-
Re: Do you like where you live ?
I moved from Michigan to where I am now in Wyoming. I like the fishing out here but I hate it. I want to move back to Flint or Lapeer. It's just not my style of life.

Re: Do you like where you live ?
NOW I like where I live, but my ambition is still to go back to where I grew up.
We (my partner and I) moved here to Denver exactly two years ago tomorrow (YAY! We're going out to dinner to celebrate in a few hours) from the hell of El Paso TX where we had been stuck for about 18 years. He had it worse: he lived most of that time in Juarez Mexico. Anyway, the past two years here have been great...even with the four blizzards of this past winter. And, as long as you have good heating/AC, it's not a bad place to keep herps. Heck, I've met more herp lovers, and animal people in general, here in a week than I EVER met in EP. Only thing is there aren't really any wild reptiles here to watch. :)
We will probably stay here for quite some time, as long as we're both still in school, and I don't mind at all. But, someday, I want to go back to live in Seattle WA, where I was raised...and still consider home.
