Re: lllreptiles sucks
i always pictured lllreptiles as a internet site, but i'm assuming they sold it to you at the expo?
-
Re: lllreptiles sucks
Mite off sucks i would get a can of Provent-a-mite from entirlypets.com, Use as directed and you will not have any more mite problems

Re: lllreptiles sucks
Be sure to quarantine!
If you have other reptiles, you'll probably want to treat their cages/tanks/tubs, too.
It's been suggested to spray a line on the floor at the bottom of the rack and the door jamb of the room to stop them from traveling to other reptile pets in other areas.
They're nasty, bloodsuckers and a real PITA when you have them,  but using the Provent A Mite (as INSTRUCTED) will work.
Putting your infected snakes on paper towels will help A LOT! Makes the buggers easier to see, dispose of when dead, and prevents as much of a hiding place for them and the eggs.
Good luck

Re: lllreptiles sucks
I'd write them, that's unnaceptable.

You said you examined it? I guess I just don't understand how you didn't see the mites all over it.
In any event good luck with getting rid of the mites. Like the others said PAM is your best bet. For now an enclosure that is very simple and very easy to clean/disenfect is your best bet.
Good luck! And :sabduel: the mites.

I did examine and Did not see anything very difficult with a snake that has small black pigments on her skin (about the size of mites.) I only saw them when i was handling and one was on my hand (gross)

But I disagree here. Since you physically picked it out and looked at it before buying, what the hell are you going to say? Well gee I wasn't very perceptive and didn't realize there are mites. Writing them would be a good idea if it was shipped sight unseen. But honestly, what would be said now?
well, good luck with your problem. hope you kept it away from the rest of the collection.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
I had mite problems and went to the store and bought some zoo med and it sucked. then i contacted the breeder and he sent me PAM and it took a while but it works. I also talked to some breeders and they said to go to the store and buy the stuff for cats and dogs and put it in some warm water and soak the snake. sorry i forgot the name of the sruff, it should be at the pet store though. another breeder sugested rubbing the snake in olive oil but i dont know about that.
good luck.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
DON'T rub oil on your snake....it can cause the scales to flake off one at a time and make a huge mess! (Picture fish scales all over your hands)
Also....don't EVER dip your snake into a product that isn't made specifically for snakes. The business of killing living organisms that act as parasites is always risky for the host animal as well, and if you don't know exactly what you're doing, you run a very high risk of causing neurological damage or even killing your snake.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
Yes get a can of provent a mite and in no time you should be mite free.
Just follow the directions and your good to go. Also you should treat all other reptiles you have so this way you're on the safe side. :D

Re: lllreptiles sucks
I've had no problems with buying herps or products from LLLReptile on their online store. I bought a blizzard leopard gecko from them, and he arrived fat and healthy, as well as a screen caged enclosure for my Chameleon. But if you said that you inspected the animal before you bought it, you really can''t take any legal action, and writing a letter probably won't do any good. Are you sure you don't already have a mite infestation in your collection already? If you bought hides from a large chain petstore, or even bedding, mites can be carried over in this manner as well. Just listing all of the possibilities here. Either way, using some P.A.M. will get the work done.

Im pretty sure it didnt come from my collection because i noticed them right after i took it outta the container it came in and it hadnt touched anything in my home. When I look through her scales I can see them underneath them little black things. Are they just mites or can they be really tiny ticks??? I know on dogs and cats ticks are pretty decent sized. Just wondering im new to the reptile parasite world never had a problem before.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
Another quick question If i were to buy it online would my snake be fine until it gets here in a week or however long it takes. I know with an adult it would be fine but she is only 2 maybe going on three weeks and soo tiny. she just ate yesterday so i figure she can take it. And thanks to all the people who have replied.

I'm pretty sure that all of their live animal is overnight shipping, and they call you before hand and make arrangements on which day to ship said animal out to make sure you'll be home when he/she arrives.

It depends on how many mites you think there are. If it's just a few...I'm sure she'll be fine until the PAM arrives. But if she's totally infested, you'll want to get rid of them as quickly as you can. A bath in barely warm water with a single drop of dish detergent in the water will kill most of them on the snake. Reptile Relief (purchased from most pet stores) also works to kill off the adults you see. The problem with these two solutions is they only kill the adults you can see and the mites will return with a vengence in a short time. PAM will kill mites at any stage of life from egg to adult, so you wipe 'em all out and they can't come back.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
Ouch; mites are a bear to deal with. Unfortunately in this world, it is buyer beware. Personally, if this happened to me I would immediately contact the seller and see what they would do to resolve this. If they were snippy and refused to at least send me a can of PAMite, then I would go about neg-repping them. But at any rate, I would get some Provent-A-Mite asap and do the soaking exercise Judy recommended in the meantime to at least reduce discomfort to the snake.
Ticks.. not sure how they look on boas. But when i saw them on a BP, they were larger, and they tended to stay in one spot and were not like black poppy-seeds that crawl, as mites are.
-
Re: lllreptiles sucks
The big chain reptiles stores move alot of animals and usually have no quarantine practice because they don't have time or space. The first BP I ever got came from another big reptile store and it had mites and ticks and was supposed to be CB. i took her back and now all my animals have come from trusted breeders. Best of luck with your problem. There is a product called reptile relief that is made with tea tree oil and is very safe on the animals. If I were you I would return her for a full refund and get a boa from a breeder. I have a friend in L.A. that deals with boas exclusively if you are interested.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
That sucks. You're not the first person to report about LLL and mites. Someone on another forums said that he was visiting the store, and saw mites. He told the staff and they just got angry at him. I always thought they took care of the animals. I guess it's better to just purchase supplies from them.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
Sorry to hear of your trouble.. I've personally bought 4 snakes from LLL and I've been extremely happy with them. Whenever you buy at an expo it's important to look REALLY close at the snakes. It can be hard sometimes to see things when you're there though.. I know.
I'd definitely contact them.. they may do something for you.

I think you are thinking of NIX. I heard some snake keepers using it and it was fine. I personaly wouldnt do it. Just use pam.

Re: lllreptiles sucks
I recently got rid of a mite infestation from my entire collection.... Not fun stuff to deal with. I certainly hope you're new red tail was quarentined. One way or another, I found the best way to go is to use PAM on the enclosures and the areas around the enclosures. Then bath your snakes once a week in luke warm water (this helps remove mites). After bathing your animals use reptile relief directly on their bodies to kill any remaining adult mites. I keep them on paper towel substrate because it makes it very easy to see the mites.
That is what I did after struggleing with mites for quite a while and it finally did the trick.
Good Luck!

Re: lllreptiles sucks
I've always found the folks at LLL to be very nice. I think it would be difficult to prove that the mites came from LLL - did you handle any other animals at the show while you were there? Are you 100% sure none of them had mites?
*shrug* Use PAM and they'll be gone.
I've purchased one snake, our BCC, from LLL at their store and I love her to bits. =)

Re: lllreptiles sucks
