Re: what to do with meds??
I'd hand it back in at a vets for proper disposal myself.

Baytril only has a 14 day shelf life once mixed (I couldn't find a specific date for Fortaz but would assume the same)....so they are useless at this point so I would dispose of them (but you need to find a "sharps" container to do so in...or do as Derek suggests and give them back to the vet to dispose of.
Re: what to do with meds??
Baytril doesn't get mixed, you might be thinking of clavamox or amoxicillin. The vial of Baytril should have a month/year expiration date on it. Just so you keep it cool and dark, it's fine even if it's expired. Fortaz doesn't get mixed either, but does need to be stored in the freezer. All of that should still be good, I would just take it back to the vet in case they want to use it.

Thanks for always being there to try and correct me :D
Both websites I googled said they got mixed (and had a 14 day expiration date) oh well I learn something new everyday.

Sometimes there is a difference between what we learn and what we actually experience firsthand. I'm a bit of a Google Queen myself so I'm always reminding myself that everything online isn't written in stone or the way it's done in practical use. :)

I couldn't agree with you more...I am just always cautious about undocumented opinion with nothing to back it up...just because you heard it from someone or practice it doesn't make it right either. :)
I said I learn something new everyday...but what I didn't say was I also question what I learned and how I learned it to determine if I believe it (or how true it really is)

Re: what to do with meds??
thanks for the input. i know what to do with the sharps, i was inquiring about the meds.
are these controlled substances? or can i give them away?
Re: what to do with meds??
Here's a thought. What about calling a pet rescue and asking them if they can use these meds? If they can, then donating them would be a wonderful thing. :)
Re: what to do with meds??
Franky-
that's exactly why i am asking if they are controlled substances.
since they can not be had without a prescription implies that they are controlled to some extent. would donating said items to a rescue break the law?
Re: what to do with meds??
They are prescription medications and should only be used as per the prescription directions. I would return them to the vet so they can either use them or dispose of them properly. Giving them to someone could possibly cause harm to their animal(if they injected the baytril in the vein, yay for tissue sloughing).
Giving them to a reptile rescue, as Jo said, is an ok idea. They would be able to get with their veterinarian and make sure they are using the medication correctly. Just be careful transporting the meds and make sure the Baytril is kept out of the light.
Re: what to do with meds??
i work in a pharmacy. you can't get in trouble for donating them to a shelter or anything like that. (that would only be for narcotics, stimulants, etc.) but, i would doubt very much that a shelter would accept them. by law, at the pharmacy, once a prescription leaves the store, we cannot accept it back unless it's just to dispose of. the reason for this is, we have no idea if it's been tampered with. would you feel comfortable taking an rx that you know somebody had before you? for all the shelter knows, you could be one of those people that hates snakes with a horrible passion and have replaced the meds with poison. you never know....
you never said how old the meds are. if they're over a year old, unless there's a printed exp. date on them, toss 'em!

the Baytril has a March 09 expiration date, the Fortaz has a August 07
Re: what to do with meds??
if they're still in the original packaging, you might be able to donate the baytril but the fortaz is probably too short dated. it's worth a try right?
