Depends on what you wanna pay. Slr's are amazing but costly. I personally have a canon SD550 and I love it takes good clear pictures, and has MANY options.

I use a Canon 10d and a whole bunch of different lenses.

I also use a Fuji Fine pix s700 for everyday pic taking, at the park, beach whatever. Easier than luggin around the MOAC (mother of all cameras) cause then I have to bring that and a bunch of different lenses.

I use Nikon D70. You'd be fine with pretty much any of Nikon's dSLRs, though. Compact cameras are okay but really don't match up to dSLRs, I think.

I will tell yout hes most awesome camera under $400.00 (digital-wise.) Fuji FinePics S700. I will compete it with anyone else's similarly-bracketed digital camera on macros (with flash!), landscapes and general portrait pics.
Here is the best think about Fuji; there is never that crappy delay from when you snap the picture button and the photo is taken. Unless you specifically set it for a delay.. I HATE cameras that make you wait a second before it snaps it.. argh.

    Sony Alpha A100
Awesome based on Minolta/Konika camera so there are tons of lens, flash and other accessories available via ebay for dirt cheap. Also, has image stablization built in to the camera which keeps the lens cost down too.

I use a Kodak EasyShare P850, tons of settings and takes great quality pictures. My only objection to the camera is that the Kodak software is horrible for transferring pictures over. "Easy Share" was not so easy, but I just bought a 20 dollar memory card reader that transfers pictures and videos in a flash. Its not the it wasn't easy to transfer the files but when you get into the 200 to 300 picture range it takes forever for the previews to come up when you want to select individual photos for transfer.

Fujifilm Finepix S9000.. it's a very nice non-SLR camera. I got a great deal on one on E-bay. it takes lovely pictures.. 9 megapixel with 10.7 optical zoom.. it also can take video with sound (something a SLR won't do)

You can look in my gallery for some samples of what it can do.. the pics there are way cropped down of course.
