    Talk About Agressive Feeder
I'm wondering if anybody else has ever been stormed as soon as opening the tub? Lustro flew out of the tub and was eyeing me down like a piece of meat before. I had to fend him off back into his tub so I could just drop the rat on in the tub; where he then proceeded to attack it visciously off the floor

He really caught me by surprise, trusty snake hook

Rich we have one 05 female here that has Mike and I trained like the bloody SWAT team...."okay...you whip off the lid....I'll toss the mouse in the corner...you drop that dang lid FAST!....ready....on my count...." Dori will "help" you get her mouse in there if you aren't fast enough LOL.

My spider Baba Ganoush is ferocius feeder. You have to be super fast or else! Last week he actually was hanging over the side of the tub coiled around his rat. I snapped a picture with my camera phone. I haven't downloaded it yet, but if it turns out decent I'll post the pic.

Yep, Fate- feeding her is a two person operation also. Quick little bugger but has a great feeding response. Cleaning her tub or giving her fresh clean water is dangerous too but not as bad as when she knows food is coming. I swear she knows the moment I walk in the house with her dinner. One of these days, Fate is going jump up and bite me :P Thankfully Karma doesn't like to bite- WHEW!

Yup, Torhild, pet name "Hammer". As soon as the tub slides open, her head shoots out. I'm a wuss and don't have tongs....I kinda drop the rat in her direction and she snatches it out of the air. Once she's distracted by squeezing, I push her back in so I can close the tub. She's never missed a rat yet.

She's the same one who hit a vein in my wrist when she bit me and gave me a huge purple bruise for days...hungry hungry girl.

I can get her out and clean her though...I just watch her carefully. If she keeps eating at this rate, she'll get her first boy this fall. :-)

    Jo,

This is hilarious. I was a rookie SWAT team member tonight then because I was totally taken by surprise. I had rat dangling from my left hand and my right hand was searching for my snake hook; meanwhile Lustro was coming straight for me like he was ready to jump for it. Had to zorro him back in.

Funny to hear stories only herpies like us would appreciate :D

I wasn't even feeding two days ago, and Dandylion came flying out! (I only opened it 2 inches for heavens sakes!!) She's still miffed that she missed a week of food while I was out of town. But otherwise she's exactly the same EVERY week. You gotta have that food ready to drop the absolute second you slide that tub open. :O

The other day, one of my females did that, it wasn't even feeding day. She was all in the S position ready to strike. I calmed her down and then took her out. Tense moments : )

I think I remember Jamie posting pics of a few of his doing the hanging out of the tub coiled on prey thing. Amazing how these relatively lazy, slow moving snakes can become pure energy when they are hunting.

And this is why I use 12" hemostats even though I feed live. To fend off the "bitey things" that aren't fuzzy :)

Little Wirenth, even at 300g(or whatever she weighs now.. she's a fatty), JUMPS out of the tub and tries to nail me everytime I go to feed. Any of you feeding box people want to come try and feed her? ;) Heh. I can't even do the stealthy SWAT team thing you are doing Jo, as she means business. I have to hold her back with the hemostats and drop the mouse in the corner where she isn't looking, then I quickly close the tub.

Yep! Luna, my '06 is like that. I always keep myself on red-alert when sliding her tub open. I will Gently tap her with the stick end of a water-sprayer bottle thingie to let her know that it is not feeding time. She will then recoil and sit there, and I pick her up without going right for her head (I am not suicidal, hehe.) My big girl, Ginger, is similar too.. she just got back on feed after lying eggs, and she would be a much bigger thing to deal with than little Luna! Both of these two are the only ones out of my BP brood that have ever bitten me. I love them to death.

WOW!! Mine is just the opposite. I take him out to the freezer, we pick out a ratsicle (in a plastic bag), put it in water, change the water a couple of times, and take them both to his tank. He goes on a paper towel while I remove the warm rat. He eats without a problem.

Lord I just got my first peek at this!

I had Darty's cage open like always and had a lil mouse above thecage and he SHOT OUT grabbed her and was constricting before he hit the floor of his cage.

then he lost interest and i had to remind him what to do... number 2 got killed and eaten fast but he plays with food item one.... but dang today he was business bout killin

My female pastel always shoots out of her tub when I open it. I have to feed her first so I don't smell like rats when I grab her and put her back in with the meal. My Spider is a pretty aggressive feeder, too. I've had him constrict a couple rats while hanging over the edge of his tub.

My macklott's python was super aggressive if she was hungry. She was really tame, but if she was hungry she got scary. She would constantly catch rats mid-air when I threw them in. Like a rabid dog playing frisby. She also tried to swallow my arm one time when she was a yearling.

I hear alot about platics tubs. I guess these are common? I use a 20g fish tank. I keep my BP right by the computer so we can make snake-eyes at each other while I'm working. I would hate to have some container that I can't see through.

Actually Bear it's a misconception that you can't see through some plastic bin housing. Iris brand makes wonderful tubs that give you all the benefits of plastic but are glass clear (as well as smooth inside so no icky ridges to trap feces and urates). We're slowing switching over to all Iris in our collection.

    Re: Talk About Agressive Feeder
i have an entire rack of bps that do the whole shooting out of the tub deal, whether it's feeding night or not. they are all seriously insane and i love it! 6 are babies i produced last year (and i am SO proud of all my little crazy eaters!), one is my spider and one is the super pastel. they never, ever miss a meal--EVER. on feeding night i hold the rat in one hand and a paper towel roll in the other. while i'm tossing the rat in from as much of a distance as possible i use the paper towel roll to protect myself and guide flailing, launching snake bodies back into their tubs. i figure if they bite the paper towels they won't hurt themselves, and a hook is not near enough protection for me since they shoot right past it. let me just say that switching from live to f/t was NOT an issue with these snakes. :P

I don't even have one of those super-clear Iris tubs and I can still see through it just fine. Say what you will, but if you ever make the switch, you'll never go back to tanks :)

LOL Emily I can just see you with your paper towel "sword" play. Heck with Dori we often use one of her hides to block her so we can get a mouse in the other end of her tub without getting nailed. Some of the mature snakes are getting pretty dang smart and have the whole "rat goes in the opposite end" thing figured out by now. As soon as we crack the far end of the tub they whip around and come flying over so it's a dance back and forth to not end up dropping the live prey in their darn ready to eat faces!

Oh and excuse me Missy Em...where the heck are new pics of that lovely spider and super pastel! Hmmmmm...hmmm....get with the camera there young lady! :P

Absolutely agree with you on that one, tanks make consistent feeders so much easier to attain.

wow, tiki is really good about eating. I take his water out and the hide he's in and dangle the little mousie infront of him, he gets all excited and eats it. He gets two, so while he's constricting the second one I put his water back in (clean now of course) and slide his hide around him. They we have a happy tiki with a full tummy and a happy owner with no bite marks....
