    Mixing snakes????????
Hi, before this is posted i just want to make sure that this is something i do NOT indend to do. It is just a curiosity that i think would make a good thead.

    SO.....

Do you or do you know anybody that keeps mixed species????

It's just something i have thought about and often wondered if it is possible?

I presume that sombody, somewhere has tried this and had success?????

Any comments would be great, Thanks Kris.

I do not agree with it at all!!! But i have recently been to a reptile shop where they had mixed hots in one really big elaborate cage.

Not a good idea at all.

Define success to you. Do you mean the snakes are happy? Do you mean that the keeper is happy? Do you want them to breed?

If you mean that the snakes are happy, then most likely, no. Different species come from different habitats and different climates. They all need different temperatures, humidity, and enclosure sizes.

A good keeper is happy if his/her snakes are happy. If the snakes are not happy, the keeper should not be happy. Unfortunately, some keepers do not research and therefore go ahead and make a bonehead decision of keeping different snakes in the same enclosure. They like the idea of all these pretty little snakes moving around in the pretty little cage in the living room so they can show their friends. Some keepers do their homework and still take the risk of mixing species.

The hybrid argument has been talked about over and over again. You should do a search on BP.net for the subject. Search for mixing species, too, I'm sure there is another thread on this.

i saw a video of a guy on youtube i think his name is viperkeeper, and he has tons of hots. anyway in this one video he is feeding one of his hots, then a ball python comes out from under a hide looking for some food.

he seems to be pretty experienced, but i really don't know why he keeps mixed species in the same enclosure.

1# Different species = Different requirements

2# Snakes are not social animal and there is no benefit in multiple housing, however there are many issues that have been documented.

Bottom line 1 Snake = 1 Enclosure regardless of mixing species or not

I think that was posted up here in a thread. And yes, the guy does have a ton of different videos, with A LOT of different snakes, and just from what i've seen, that was the only hot and ball he had together. But it still was weird. I mean, well, what if he's an expert? like, "i run around africa and spend months with these snakes studying them" kinda expert.
I would love to get him in a chat and pick his brain.

Just thinkin and typin over here...

yeah, that link was posted here. it was also mentioned that he once had the bp take a mouse out of the other snakes mouse. so, obviously, this is not good and is going to cause some problems!

He also mentioned at one point while discussing a cage containing three hots it was nice to see them eating nicely instead of biting each other as usual.

Ya I remember that guys link being posted. He was definately short on room for all the snakes he had thus he started housing some together. He was experienced but I remember watching him almost die with his puff adder.

    Re: Mixing snakes????????
Why put the undue stress on the snake? Two snakes will compete for space; for the best basking/heating spot; the best hide. Setting up identical hides? They will still stress each other out by merely moving around the cage. Not to mention disease spreading.. much wasier to catch a disease frrom a tankmate than a snake in a seperate enclosure. And if one gets sick, both need to be treated..
BPs are not social animals. They join up to mate briefly, and then the mother incubates her eggs; that is the extent of it.

Ya i think he has a few. I know I was watching a video where he was just letting it cruise around on the floor or something and then he was trying to put it back in a tub and he was doing a very poor job of handling it. You should watch his videos they are definately interesting to say the least.

i just got back from a local pet store and i was DISGUSTED!!! OMFG this pissed me way off. okay so im looking at all these reptiles and cages look like crap. snakes all have stuck shed and he's selling them WAY to expensive. i get to what looks like a 55Gallon Tall tank and guess how many Balls were in there? just take a wild guess. most stores do the 1 to 10 thing. i counted over 200 baby bp!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF is up with these people are they that stupid? they were all babys and just moving around each other. so i acted like i was new to the whole "snake thing" and asked him is it okay for them. he said yes, matter of fact they love the company! i asked him how he feeds them. he says he just thaws a big bag of pinkies out and then plops it in there. keep in mind 1 water dish that had coconut bark in it so it was brown water. no hides. no temperature. Poop everywhere! god i wish there was a law against this. he has a sign " ball pythons 80.00 sale price 40.00!! i wanted to feed him to his 14 foot burmese. i felt so bad. i dont have a rack big enough for all of them nor the funds. just thought id let you know the only reptile store in el paso is possibly the worst one in the world! i think he did the BP lottery.
