House mice affraid of BP pet?
I'm a new BP owner and I have mice that occasionally creep through my room looking for a snack. I was just curious if a mouse could sense a snake like the way a snake would scent the mouse. Could it be possible that the mice would avoid the room sensing a snake?Anyone have any knowledge or experience in this matter? Seems like it would be one more plus for owning a BP.

Eeeek I think I would purposely let out my snake to get rid of the creeping mice! :O j/k
Re: House mice affraid of BP pet?
Haha. From what I can tell the mice don't care at all. I have had feeders that walk over my BP before she strickes them. They are kinda doopy about that... ^_^

No, b/c I feed live and I supervise the entire time of the feeding, and the mice always do the same thing- walk right up to their nose and look them in the eye.. Then- WHAM!!! Not too smart...lol...

I don't know if wild mice would instinctively behave differently or not.
Domesticated mice don't seem to even realize that the snake is a predator. Whether that's because they are domestic mice rather than wild mice - I'm not sure.
I've seen some captive bred wild mice that were pretty darn jumpy and skittish though.
Re: House mice affraid of BP pet?
I wish that the snakes would repel mice! Living in an old farmhouse with a dirtfloor basement, it is almost like living one step from outside in a way.. they do come in. We have even had toads in thr house!
My cat is a great mouser though.. the mice are really only noticible in winter.
Re: House mice affraid of BP pet?
I figured domesticated mice would not care, but I'm still curious about wild mice. Maybe if I don't see any signs of mice again I'll know.

ditto, I usually just sigh and laugh as the mouse walks right over to my snake, heck, I have even had some mice go in the dag on hide hes hidding in!
Re: House mice affraid of BP pet?
Hmmm here's something I thought of, might be interesting to see if wild mice react to it. Figure out where they are getting into your house, lay a very fresh snake shed there. See if that repels them at all. If they are preyed upon by snakes in your yard, who knows, it may make them reconsider your house as a good place to hang out.

i was talking about 'wild' mice
