Getting closer???

It seems as if any day now I might have a nice litter of Hogg's! :carrot: :carrot: I snuck a quick picture of her this morning.
I am pretty stoked as this is her first breeding.

Damn Mike, that is going to be a huge litter. I need to get some Hoggs one day, I love those guys. Can't wait for the pics.

Sad news!!!:crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:


I came home this morning and checked in on my girl. She was not on the hot side where she normally is, she was in the front on the cool side. Sometime during the night, she passed away! :crying: :crying: :omfg:

I am really confused as I have no idea why this happened. I took this opportunity and did some exploratory disection. Everything was fine; good liver, good kidneys, and the babies looked healthy. None had ruptured or anything.
Anybody that breeds boas have any ideas?

I am going to miss this girl. She never struck at me, hissed at me only once (last week), and I had had her since she was a baby. :(

Ah, Mike, I'm sorry to hear that! I love Hoggs, too, and was hoping to see babies.

I know how sad it is to lose something you've taken such good care of for so long.

I'm sure it was nothing you had any control over. :(

any chance you got a baby count while you were in there? a lot of times female boas will just have way more babies then they can handle. could be that on it's own. so many of them will also cause a rupture which can lead to problems too, but you said they were all intact. i think i read somewhere that jeremy stone has at least 1 female die a year from too many babies, so it's horrible to hear but i guess it just comes with the territory?

Sorry to hear that Mike, I was looking forward to see some baby hoggs. How did her ovaduct look? Could you see any viens? Any obvious kinking? Losing an animal like that is tough, especially when you don't know what the problem was.

I have heard of that happening three times this year with Hogs. Sorry. She might have been underheated, over-filled with babies, stressed out from carrying them, plugged, or it could have been she wasn't fed during enough during the gravid period. Anything could have done it. Sorry again.

Aww man that really sucks. I'm so sorry to hear about that, but it does happen in breeding animals. I know a few people who have had boa's and BP's that are in great health one day and then bam they just die. It could have been for a number of reasons. It's hard to say why or what caused it.

Her oviducts looked fine. I did not notice any kinking or blockage. She had good veins, everything looked as it should be.
If memory serves me, she was carrying anywhere from 14 - 16 young.

I know that these things happen and in the grand scheme of things, some are just not meant to make it but it was a little disheartening.
