Boiga dendrophila (mangrove snake)

I've seen that at least one person on here has kept one before. For those that has kept one...

How long did you keep it for and what was it's growth rate like?
What is it's overall size(girth) in relation to say...a ATB?
What size enclosure did you keep yours in?
Was it WC or CB and did you have any trouble getting it to feed?

I've only been able to find one caresheet so far, So I'm trying to get as much info as possible...thanks.

stop thinking medium sized boa and start thinking more large large colubrid, because that's what they are. they're rear fanged, get to about 8 feet max, so roughly the size of the beauty snakes. also rather active and usually high strung and they're very variable in temperment but can give a nasty bite which i *think* is just real bad swelling and pain, almost positive no deaths from mangroves. and that's all i remember off the top of my head. i can go probably find more on them somewhere but i don't remember where.

Looks about right. I believe they are a bit bigger in girth but I have never had experience with a full blown adult, only about a 5' sub adult

Yup, that's about the average girth of a full grown beauty snake. Mangroves are gorgeous, I'm just not brave enough to mess with even rear fanged venomous!

After reading around and looking at pics, I think I may order a 1.1 pair of them soon.

I'm still debating between a mangrove and a RTB...really really wanting a mangrove though. If you do get one I want to see it in person, after all I only live 50 miles from you...lol

This would make a awesome display setup for one...3'x3'x4', all acrylic for $75 I believe he lives in Seward or one of the small towns around Lincoln. I would buy it but it won't fit it thru my door. :(

I was reading in a herp book I got from the library that there was a report of a mangrove snake biting a man on the shoulder and he immediately passed out and dropped down

I just PM'd him on my local board to get his contact info. Like I said I can't fit it through my door or have any place to store it otherwise I would. Believe it or not he used to keep a ball python in that. :eek

lol I don't know if I could fit it through the door either but I have plenty of storage space anyways. If you don't take it, I sure will

Interesting, he must have had a severe reaction to the venom. I found this on one of my arachnid forums I visit.

I figured this was the best place to post this since we don't have a bite report forum strictly for reptiles.....I was munched on by an adult female Sulawesi Mangrove (a rear-fanged colubrid from Indonesia for those who are not familiar with the species) about 2 years ago. The snake in question was very defensive (among the highest of any snake I've dealt with) and always commanded great respect when working with her.....I had to use a 4' hook to keep her out of my face when doing cage maintenance lol.

In order to avoid the whole repeated strike thing while trying to bag her up, I pinned her head and grasped her firmly behind the head with my left hand and attempted to place her into a snake bag. Of course, she was NOT happy about me touching her at all, and she managed to squirm out of my grasp (the elasticity of her skin and jaw bones was astonishing, even among snakes) and plant a massive "revenge bite" onto all four of my available fingers....she held on for roughly 15 seconds or so, and got many good chews into me...I finally coaxed her off of my hand (which was bleeding profusely at this point) and placed her into the snake bag (which was also covered in blood by now).

The effects of the venom were quite intriguing (theres no doubt in my mind I was envenomated). Shortly after the bite, I experienced heavy throbbing and aching in the bite area and in my entire left hand....10 minutes after the bite my hand began to swell noticeably....15 minutes after the bite, I began to feel a "pins and needles" sensation that ran the length of my hand and up into my forearm....20 minutes into the experience, I was experiencing heavy swelling, bleeding and numbness in part of my hand/forearm. 45 minutes after the bite, the symptoms started to diminish....an hour after the bite the swelling and numbness has subsided for the most part. For a couple of weeks after the bite, I experienced abnormal aching in the bite area (and many teeth were of course ledged in my fingers lol).

All in all, this was not an experience I'd like to repeat. Thankfully the delivery system of Boiga (and most rear-fanged colubrids) is poor and I was only injected with a small amount of venom. I'm sure that more venom would cause a signifigantly more serious reaction. In closing, here is a nice picture of the little beast that ruined my day lol (looking her usual friendly self, haha):

I'm actually planning an experiment for if/when I do get one to test the toxicity of the venom. I'll have a huge write up if all goes as planned.

I was looking at the ones LLL reptile has for sale and I called, this is what they said
"We don't treat them(for parasites) unless they look sick"
"We try to feed them mice but some won't eat so there is no guarantee there"

I've seen http://www.snakemuseum.com/ (Great Valley Serpentarium) advertise on kingsnake.com having CB mangroves for sale. They post them in the "other snakes" and I believe in the "venomous" section as well.

mfezi has some Treated and feeding Mangroves. Thanks for the info. I'll look into it
