Pastels or Normals????
so i just bought two pastel babies from a reputable dealer...but now that theyre home, im starting to wonder whether they are in fact pastels and not just normals...they might also be cinnamon pastels...anybody here have any idea? there is pics of them in my gallery....in real life, their colours look most like pictures Pastel 1 and Pastel 2.
thanks
steve
oh and does anyone know why it says i cant post attachments?

Re: Pastels or Normals????
They look normal to me...how much did you pay for them, if that's not too nosey?
Are you housing them together?

Re: Pastels or Normals????
theyre from the same clutch, and theyre still together for now..
i got them from a reptile supplier who is also related to me so i dont think they would lie, but i dont know..
because im related i didnt pay the sticker price...so not too much but still i asked for pastels...
-
Re: Pastels or Normals????
Well theyve been in the business for years, they sell tarantulas, every lizard under the sun, scorpions, and almost every type of snake...they sell at reptile shows..
what do you think i should do?
-
Re: Pastels or Normals????
First, you should separate them. Even though we imagine that they like to have buddies, they really don't. It stresses them out and in some cases, cannibalism has occurred.
As for the price you payed, how much did you pay? Just curious.

Re: Pastels or Normals????
Does this supplier have a website? I don't think anyone can tell you what to do, but they don't look like pastels to me, from those shots. I'm no expert, but that's my opinion.
And they do need to be seperated, from the same clutch or not. :)
-
Re: Pastels or Normals????
well it kind of sucks that they have to be separated because i just set them up in a 50-60 gallon tank..but thanks:)
i payed $30 canadian each

Re: Pastels or Normals????
What a rat! They look VERY normal to me.
-
Re: Pastels or Normals????
You could buy a piece of wood and stick it in the middle as a divider. That way you'd have two 30 gals. :)
Oh, and $30 sounds like a cheap price for a normal.

Re: Pastels or Normals????
Here's a photo of my guy (courtesy of Vaughn [kavmon]). You can see even a fairly "browned out" pastel still has a yellow underbelly. But the eye color is the dead give away (notice the BRIGHT green color).
I can say with some certainty the photos you have in your gallary are normals. The eyes look dark, no blushing. One of them looks like a high yellow normal, but a normal none-the-less.

Re: Pastels or Normals????
well i get such cheap prices because its my close relative...for comparison
a clown would be 800-900
a fireball would be 400-600
so i dont pay store prices..
for me, normals would be like 15$
oh and these are all canadian prices.
thanks for the tip about the wood, ill try that
they have been breathing hard so maybe they are stressed out

Wholesalers pay a great deal more than that. But price is a fairly subject thing. If you are paying "low prices" but they are all pretty normals, then your prices aren't all that low anyway.

Your ambient temps need to be ~80-82 degrees with a "warm side" of ~90 degrees, and humidity of around 50-60% (I stay on the high end). Breathing problems are usually attributed to incorrect atmosphere.

Re: Pastels or Normals????
So the guy doesn't have a website?

Re: Pastels or Normals????
Those are normal BP and not pastel or cinnamon, which means that no matter how good of a deal you think you might have had on some pastels is not a good deal after all, sorry :( . (You can see some pastel in my gallery for comparison)
sounds about right for a normal BP and in no way would you have found a Pastel for that price.

theyre from the same clutch, and theyre still together for now..
Now if you plan on keeping them you need to separate them ASAP, 1 Snake = 1 Enclosure regardless of them being from the same clutch or same age or same size.
BP are solitary and there is no benefit from housing them together however several issues have been documented including cannibalism
Also if those are baby they need a much smaller enclosure, 10 gallons each or 15 quarts plastic tubs. Big enclosures stress BP and you want to avoid that, so you will need an enclosure for each BP that will grow with them here is a basic list of what you will need http://www.geocities.com/gaballpythons/
Note: If that person told you those were Pastel and he was cutting you a great deal on them 1# He lied to you 2# He is in no way a reputable breeder (just my :2cent: )

I'd be curious to see what his 900$ clown looks like if the Pastel look like those:8:

Re: Pastels or Normals????
You got hosed.
Those are normals.
I would be seriously ticked off especially since it was a relative that ripped you off.

there might be confusion, those might be pastel or cinnamon siblings? (normal sibs)
i'll take every 800-900 clown he has, no joke!

Re: Pastels or Normals????
I'd be willing to bet that these were sold to you as pastel "siblings" - which are just normal siblings in the same clutch as pastels are hatched out of.

Re: Pastels or Normals????
No, they are not pastels. I seriously would like to know the name and website of this person. Are you sure that he is not selling "het" clowns for that price? Do you know that Clowns are a multi-thousand-dollar snake?
-
Re: Pastels or Normals????
they look normal IMO

You sure? I mean, pastels are $35 CND so clowns gotta be $900.00 at the most... :8: :8:
You def dont have pastels, but they are pretty normals though.

Re: Pastels or Normals????
First off you relative took you for a fool or you misunderstood. May breeders will advertise spider sibs or pastel sibs. There is nothing special about them other than they are normals laid by a morph. Its simply a clever marketing ploy. To answer your question no they are not pastels. Second 900 CAD for a 8500 USD snake sounds alot like your 30.00 pastel deal. Wholesalers don't even sale clowns for 900 CD.
I'm not trying to tell you your business but if I were you I'd take those snakes back get my money and deal with a breeder that want lie to you (family or not)
Here check this guy out Mark is a good guy and hes Canadian so you'll have no shipping problems. WWW.Ballpythons.ca
Sorry you got taken but I hope you can work it out

Re: Pastels or Normals????
Sorry to say but from those pics, well hon I have normals that look more like pastels do than those two. Lovely little snakes but they appear quite normal. Did you do any research on what a pastel looks like at various stages of it's life as well as the difference in different lines of pastel (Graziani, Lemon, Blonde, etc.). What gender are they supposed to be?
-
Re: Pastels or Normals????
besides your bp's not being pastel's. You still have to take care of them properly. First i would seperate the two, and also that enourmous tank would stress a bp out pretty good. Also your gonna have a ton of temp control and humidity problems. So i would check out some past husbandry threads so you are able to keep your husbandry up to par... Good luck with your new babies. :2cent:

Re: Pastels or Normals????
I looked at your pics, and did not see any Pastels. I am with everyone else, did you buy Pastel SIBLINGS, which is code for pricey normals? As far as the $900 Clowns, are you sure they are not Het Clowns, or Clown wannabes? I would say get off your relative's mailing list, and get your money back. As far as keeping two Balls togather, I do not have a problem with that, just feed them separately.
