Yes; Emma (the white mare) is the leader. She is constantly on red alert. Cuesta used to be the lead mare, but she is so smart in my opinion, that she let Emma think she's in charge, because then she can relax more and not be paranoid. :)

Spring has got to be the best time to be a horse...weather is warmer, new yummy grass, flies aren't too big, winter coat sheds off....just need someone to bring you a carrot or an apple and you got it made!

They do close their eyes, but of course the minute they hear anything, they pop open. Especially Emma, who is the horse equivelant of someone affected with paranoia..
I love going into the barn early in the morning and seeing them still laying down and groggy.. of course, once they hear me, they hafta stand up as fast as possible before the camera can even be switched on..
