What to Breed to a Normal?
OKay well i have a normal female right now, shes just a baby, but when shes of breeding age and i've moved out to my own place id like to buy a male to breed to her. My question is what is a good morph to breed to a normal. Like if i bought an Albino male would some of theyre babies be albino and some normal or what not? And what other things are there to consider, or what morph would you suggest i start with?

Best make that decision in three years when your ready to breed. Cause you never know what will be affordable by then.

And on the albino question...no..Any homo recessive animal bred to a normal (or wild type) will produce all 100% het for whatever.

Albinos are recessive , if you bred her with an albino male all babies and would look normal but would be het for albino's

edit ... freakie frog said it better

Oh i see, i get what recessive means now i've read it a lot but wasn't quite sure. I geuss when it comes to that time i'll have to get that Complete Ball Pythons book, i was going to anyway, i was just curious now what kind of babies i could make. haha cuz i love thinking about future babies

Wait till she is ready to breed and then decide, by then there will be different morphs to choose from. Something may well catch your eye at that point! :)

I wouldn't wait until she's ready to breed. Some males take up to 2 years to sexually mature. I'd wait until she's 1.5 to 2 years old and than decide :).

Here is a link that should help you understand the outcomes depending on what morph you will chose in the future http://www.ballpython.ca/genetics.html.

just go with what you like and can afford, because after all, what someone else may like, you might not want.

Thanks for that website, it made sense to me, So a Mojave( i love them) is a codominate and if i bred it to a normal chances are i would have about half normals and half Mojaves?

    Exactly!

It's all in the eye of the beholder! :)

Yep. The sheer number of morphs makes it incredibly difficult to make a single choice. My first animals were recessive hets, and my first morph was a Pastel. Everybody has their own opinion on the best first morph, but I'm still of the belief that Pastels are the best. With the way prices are falling, you'll have alot more options when your girl is ready.

now your getting it, yep a mojave to a normal ( with good odds) will produce 1/2 normals and 1/2 mojaves. you could also produce all normals or a great number of mojaves so you never know but thats the fun in it.

Yes 50% Normals - 50% Mojave, but keep in mind those are odds and it all comes down to whether or not the Ball Python god is smiling upon you ;)

and also those numbers are the odds per animal not per clutch. You could get all normals or all Mojos also possible but not probable.

I do not think you could go wrong with:
    a) a clean-patterned, spotless Spider male.
    b) a nice, blushy Graziani Pastel Jungle male
    c) a nice, blushy Mojave

Maybe for a beginning breeder, buy an already-proven-breeding male?
