I dont know what to do.
I dont know if this goes into this part of the forum but oh well. Just got word that we have 3 months to be out of of military houseing. Sadly we were not able to get a loan on a home and we will be moving into a slum appt. untill we can make ends meet.

I cant have reptiles any more. I dont know what to do. everything has to go including my cat and my fish. (due to one fish being non native)

any ideas as what I can do for my reptiles would be great. I dont want to let them go to a bad place.

I feel so lost. I was hoping that this move would be the start of a great new life but this has turned into a nightmare.

Thank you for letting me vent and for any advice you give.

do you have to get rid of all your animals because you can't have them in the apartment you will be moving to? (i'm just wondering if there is any way you can at least keep some of your pets.) you can rehome your reptiles if you have to--you have 3 months to look for good homes for them--i'd start now so you don't get stuck making a last minute decision--this way you can take your time and place them with good, responsible owners. sorry your move isn't turning out to be so hot. :(

Very sorry that things are not going well for you. Good luck in rehoming your animals. Hope that there is a way you can keep some of them.

Thank you all. the limited funds we will have once the army finishes its *** ****** of my husband will leave us with 2 options. We can get an ok appt. that wont allow any pets (giving us money to save for a house someday) or we can get a nice place that will alow my snakes but then we wont have the money for food for them or vet bills. I would rather they go to good homes that can afford to feed and care for them. if they stay with me they wont get there weekly meals and could suffer.
I want what is best for them.

Problem #2: my fedex guy still has not called me back. so I'm not able to ship. so things have to be local or simi local. most of the snakes i have are rescues from this city and I dont trust any one here to know how to properly care for them.

Jessie, why do you have to leave on-post housing? And how much is the BAH for his rank and your zipcode? With BAH, BAS, and basic pay, you should be able to get a decent place that allows pets since cost-of-living around Fort Gordon is pretty low, and still feed/care for your pets.

Re: I dont know what to do.
BAH is 900 bucks but... he is being put out of the military for having high blood pressure, being over weight and for being an indevisual who thinks for him self.

so we wont get BAH. the most that he is going to get is a small check from the army saying "thanks" so that wont cover alot.

I do however have a trick left up my sleave. The one place we didnt contact for the loan was the bank that my husband got his truck loan from. they have a Morgage (sp?) department. so I'm calling some time today to see what happens. That is my last chance to do good for myself, my family/pending family (I might be having a baby) and my pets. (who are family any way)

I wont give up just yet but things still look grim.

Is he getting an MEB? A medical discharge? If so, he should be getting a severance check, which is base pay x 2 x how many years he served.

he is going through a med board as we speak but all we might be getting is severance pay from this. he has been in 10 years. his chain of comant has it in for him. I have been fighting with his 1st. Sgt. and Comander over how the SSgt.s are treating my husband and the abuse they have been giving him (I got everything on audio tape and they still wont believe that it is real) I have delt with this 2 other times. With my mother and my god father.

I have contacted the Chaplin about this but I'm waiting for a call back.

What rank is he? Severance should be pretty decent if he's been in 10 years. If he's at least an E-5, you should be getting a good amount if you look at the calculations above. And if an MEB finds him unfit, he gets an honorable discharge, like I did. From there you can apply to the VA for a home loan, they have good rates and will work with you.

Forget the Chaplin, they don't do crap. We tried that route when Lex was having issues with his NCOIC. You need to contact your husband's home state congressman and start a congressional, which is a congressperson's inquiry into the situation and will require an investigation by the command as well as a former evaluation of the situation sent back to the congressman. The chain of command HATES dealing with congressionals so just getting them involved usually makes them quit the BS and finally deal with crap. I had to start one during my MEB because of how long it was taking and how no one was getting anything done. It motivated them to finally start working on my paperwork and getting me the evaluations I needed.

he is an E-5. we are planing on contacting the congressmen. my mother is one of the head in the VA in AZ so she is looking in to stuff to to see what she can truly do for us.

Pete dosent want to "ruffel any more feathers" over this but he is going to have to.

There is no problem with the med board. he went in for his first Phase of it last week and is doing the 2nd phase tomorrow. this is going VERY VERY fast compared to the 3 years it took for my mother.

Wow, that is fast. Mine took 6 months.

Hopefully the VA can pull through for you, and hopefully all goes well with his MEB. Keep me posted on what happens, I will help in any way that I can.

Well, I would definately suggest getting a stable, fulltime job of your own. Especially with a spouse that is not in a steady career, women need to have jobs of their own these days to give themselves some sense of stability if anything should go wrong. I worked for years at a crappy parttime miinmal-wage dump, and we were struggling as he was pulling more of the financial burden. I have no college education.. I took a job in collections, which I do to this day. Fulltime, benefits, bonus checks (don't rely solely on those!) We thus could afford a house and mortgage, but we like where we are renting from now and extended credit into other things (atv, my car, a few credit cards.) His construction business is doing well, but there were months that we got by on my fulltime pay, and if i were still at the grocery store, we would have went into a tailspin financially.
You don't have to settle for life in a slum.

I was thinking though.. there are many apartments out there that don't care if you have reptiles. If I were renting, I would rather rent to a herp keeper than someone who had a dog or cat. It is all about finding the right landlord; it can be done, we found a landlord that lets us have everything now from the horses to the snakes, and rats.

That's a rarity. When we moved to Texas then when we moved back up here to Wisconsin, absolutely no one would allow reptiles...hell, they wouldn't even allow more than 2 cats. We checked out somewhere between 30-40 apartment complexes, and no one would allow ball pythons. Even the house we rented in Texas wouldn't allow them without charging a $150 pet fee per snake.

Re: I dont know what to do.
This isn't the "right" thing to do, but..... When we moved to this apt. we just didn't say anything about the reptiles. She (the manager) only asked us if we had a cat or dog. We said no. She never used the word pet only cat or dog. Kind of a technacality but it worked. 4 years later, she know about them and is ok with it. She realized that there was no after affects (fleas, damage, noise) of her tennats keeping reptiles and now she allows them here. Just a thought. I hope your search goes well for you. Things will fall in place. Keep Positive!!

I agree. If you don't have any dangerous pets, just don't tell the landlord. I did that, but I let my neighbors know after a couple of months. One lady was a little freaked out, but after a short talk she was fine with it, too. Then I eventually called my landlord and said I bought a pet frog, and asked if that was ok. Once a couple of frogs was ok, I saw no reason why she would have a problem with a gecko or 2. I used this rationalization to evolve up - collared lizards, a cham, then corns, BPs, and a Macklott's. Everything was cool when we eventually invited our landlord in to see our "new additions".

Re: I dont know what to do.
If yuo do not tell your future landlord, please make sure that the herps are impeccably housed so that they can Not escape. This is a case in point: in the past month, Mark has found a total of three snakes in one of their vacated houses (he works as a property management firm to investor/landlords.) First off, they found a deceased BCI (roughly 6 feet of dead, reeking snake) behind a dresser.. then found a LIVE CORAL snake! (I plsted about that recently.) Then, unbelievably, last week they found a Second live coral snake!!! Again, they called Animal Control to get it.. he nor his guys were messing around with venom.
Escapee snakes, especially unknown-to-landlord ones, are one thing that can definately hurt our hobby.
