Reptiles in Apartments.

Ok I have been stressing out the last few days.

Still live my parents as of now. Im 19 and plan on living with them for a few more years.

I got to thinking what I am going to do when I move out. Most likley I will go into an apartment.

Are reptiles allowed in apartments? I do not want to have to part with my reptiles at ALL!!! And before I add anything to my collection I need this issue cleared.

yeah, i think the only animals the managers would worry about would be cats or dogs.... anything that can ruin the floor. seeing as how herps don't make much of a mess, it shouldn't be a problem.

i don't see why not, i guess it just depends on the landlord or maybe the city laws. my landlord doesn't really notice my snakes when he comes but he usually sees an empty tank.

i would just ask the landlord of the apartment if he allows pets, usually they think dog/cat. maybe ask if they allow fish. cause thats basicly what a snake does most of the time, chill in it's tank/tub.

You know, I have only lived in two apartments since being on my own and I live in North Idaho so I would almost expect people to freak out about it.

Well to my suprise, every one was very welcoming of all my fur challenged friends. I asked around last feb. when we were looking to move, about pet deposits and such for reptiles. EVERYONE was okay with it, no one asked for a pet deposit on any of my animals except my dog. They just asked that they be secured, and that if I have any reptiles that required any kind of permit that I show proof and that I didn't have any VERY large snakes outside bothering the neighbors if they felt uncomfortable. But other than that which I though was really reasonable I didn't have one person say flat out NO.

It also depends on your area. Remember never to sneak them in and try to hide them though. That never turns out good. I would just do a lot of shopping around.

Yeah I was like well I will just sneak them in...but no I'd rather be up front about it. And show them/tell them that I have very secure cages.

i currently live in an apartment ( 2 bedroom) and use the second bedroom as my herp room/guest bedroom ( keeps the inlaws from coming over), they are not allowed here but i currently have 11. . they state that cats,dogs, and tank animals are allowed....so if i ever get questioned about it i have a fall back. sad thing is i have to pay a deposit for each so they dont know about them or 2 of my cats LOL...good luck and if its not allowed sneak them in

Thats not very sound advice. Then he would either 1. be evicted and have that on his permanant rental history 2. have to remove the pets and still have that on his history

When I was in apts, I didn't have snakes, but the cats required a cleaning AND pet deposit, which were non-refundable. Once I had a couple of snakes, and moved to a house (but still a rental) I had cats, a couple of rats, a dog and the snakes. Fred was cool about it. The pet deposit was was for the cats and dog, and as long as the snakes didn't destroy anything he was okay with it.


When Kaa escaped, I let him know a few days later, since I was expecting to find Kaa before then. As it was, since Kaa was still MIA when we moved, Fred was expecting to let me know they had him cornered, NOT that they had found him b/c of the smell. :eek:

I was supposed to get about $150 of my deposits refunded, but b/c Kaa ended up dying in the WIRING of the stove Fred and I discussed the issue. I had sanitized it & we agreed to let it outgas any odors for a few days, but after thinking on it, since Kaa was in the wiring behind the knobs, there was concern for a fire hazard from any wire shorting out.....so my deposit money bought the next renter a new stove. :( All part of RESPONSIBLE pet ownership.

DON'T try to sneak it....but as long as it's not a giant, most places don't care about snakes, as long as you can assure them (like Fred) that if they escape, you'll pay for damages. Otherwise, they're even cheaper than fish (water damage) or cats and dogs (fleas, replacing the carpet, clawing the walls, etc.). They may charge you a regular pet deposit but be honest.

i wouldn't lie to a prospective landlord.... but maybe just ask about "tank animals." don't mention the "s" word unless he/she asks.... just in case they have phobias... don't freak them out unless neccesary! lol

Yeah I would most likley say "reptiles".

For some reason when people hear "python" they think of a 15 foot snake for some reason...(stupid media).

Definatley like to be up front about everything I do...especially if it invovles animals and especially the animals under my care.

definitely don't lie about it or try to sneak them in. that is grounds for eviction and even if they give you a warning first you will have a very short amount of time to either get rid of all the animals or move out.

from my experience most places do allow reptiles but some have restrictions on type and/or size. i lived in my last apartment for 6 years with no problems with a roomful of herps but about 6 months before i moved i was browsing the rental agency's web site and noticed that they had added a "no exotics" clause to the list of pet restrictions. there was nothing like that on the actual lease that i had signed and since i knew i was moving in several months i chose to ignore it. just be aware and ask about any such restrictions and you should be fine. :)

Not always true.If someone is scared or plain ignorant about reptiles then they could refuse to rent you a place.I have seen it done :mad:

Definitely....I say reptiles, then if they ask, it depends on the situation if I tell them snakes or not. I usu. lead in w/Robin's pet corn snake. Saying python/boa tends to spook some ppl

Being a college town and surrounding communities, it really sucks when they stomp on us GOOD renters just b/c some irresponsible college/young adults shaft them w/pet damage....

I'm just glad I'm not renting anymore!!!!! I'm my own landlord now.:carrot: :carrot: :carrot:

honestly i doubt it had anything to do with me specifically. this is a nationwide rental agency, owning apartment complexes all over the country. :) i can however, see how a smaller, singly owned/managed complex might do something like that as a result of one of their tenants keeping snakes or other reptiles. :(
