I don't think there's any such thing as an ugly dumerils.. they're all so pretty!

Yup, I've been asked so many times "Why do you keep dumerils? They aren't worth much" and all I say is "Have you looked at them?" They are awesome pets! That male is from a dwarf line, high pink from Mike at Basically Boas. His mom is only 4.5 feet and his father is barely 4 feet. I can't wait to have baby dumerils, 2008 season they will go and I'm really excited.

Yeah they're great snakes. Hopefully some cool morphs will turn up.. though it's harder since there aren't any WC dums anymore.

I hate how the biggest emphasis is on what they're worth, whatever happened to enjoyment? if I did that, I should just toss all my candoia in the trash. But I agree, hard to find an ugly dum, and you got some nice ones

Yeah I hear ya.. I guess I shouldn't be keeping my $30 kingsnakes either then.

Me too. I'm in this for the fun. I enjoy raising them and producing whatever I can. There is nothing like waking up to a pile of gooey boas!

There was a rumor of a Hypo Dum, but it never produced. I don't think you will see much in the field of morphs with them because of just what you said, no more WC ones are available. The only ticket to more interesting and fun things with them will be through selective breeding, I'm game!

Nice looking Dumerils. I don't know why they aren't more popular. Nice looks, nice personality, nice size, fairly easy care requirements. Whats not to like?

I got her as an adult, I'm guessing she wasn't handled that much with her previous owners.

haha my Satan isn't very nice either... He strikes at the glass when you walk in the room... he is starting to calm down a little but sheesh! The other 4 are sweet hearts though

I agree. People(me included) keep and breed normal bps. I only get about $50 a piece for the babies. But we know its not about the money. I just recently picked up my first Dumerils last month. I see people selling them for over $200 all the time. My friend breeds them so I get a great discount. I would think that the fact you can't get wc anymore that the price would increase. I for one am against imports anyway.

I have 2 dums and they are bothe very sweet. The never strike and seem to enjoy being handled. My male will snuggle up next to me and put his little head on my shoulder. He watches TV with me. I don't care what they cost or the value assigned to their breed. They are my pets, my babies and my buddies :snake:

I think a lot of people just "don't get it" when it comes to dumerils boas. First they just don't look as beautiful in a picture as they do in real life. The beauty of a Dumerils is more subtle then say a RTP or Burm or say a JCP. Rather then being bright and colorful they are brown leaf colored and dull lacking any sheen. Yet when you really study the patterns and the shadows, etc there are few snakes that have more elegant beauty to them.

Size I think is another issue. Most seem to think of them as a "smaller boa" and while this is true an adult will often be 6-7.5 feet and is one impressive snake. I have seen many RTB adults no bigger then most fully grown Dums. To me they are like a RTB with an insurance pollicy against going to 9 feet plus. So I think a lot of uneducated boa keepers think these are small boas vs. good size boas that don't go insane with size.

Another thing is I think many people who have only had a passing brush with young Dums think they are "snappy". While I myself dealt with a little demon when I got my Dumerils he is a sweetheart now. While he tagged me twice when I first got him his striking went quickly to bluffs and now he is just great. In my experience adult Dums are one of the most relaxed and gentle big snakes known to man but I think they might get a bad rap because some babies are a bit nervous.

That said as far as not being worth much with the size of a Dumerils litter (if you breed at like 4 years of age) even a 1.2 pair can provide a nice additional revenue steam. They sell online a lot between 125-150 each and if you price them at like 75 bucks you can move a whole litter in less then a week. I don't know if you can say that about normal RTBs etc,
