    Siberian Huskies
When you hear about a husky "blowing" it's coat.

I took at least this much from her yesterday and there's still more. LOL

    The culprit.

I have a husky as well... I have gotten TONS of fur out of him in just one brushing... not to mention the vacuum cleaner gets full of fur after vacuuming only half of the living room. :P

Yeah.. when we get huskies (or chows.. or malamutes etc etc) in the groom shop and we use the big blow dryer on them, it looks like it's snowing hair.

She's such a cutie.. and her portrait is coming along nicely too. ;)

"Denali maintains the only working sled dog kennels in the National Park Service. Dogs assist rangers to conduct winter patrols, supply and clean backcountry project sites, and support research activities. Twenty-five pounds of waste per day (including bedding straw) are generated from feeding the 30 dogs about 14,000 pounds of dry kibble annually. The result is 9,000 pounds of material per year, which is composted and used for landscaping. Brushing dogs regularly also produces large amounts of shed fur which is saved for local artisans to spin, dye, knit, and make hats, ear bands, and other useful items."

Denali (in Alaska) is one of the places including the Yukon Territory in Canada where native artists make some amazing things from that shed. :)

I'm not surprised. It's so soft and full, I bet a hat would be so incredibly warm.

    Lovely girl!

For more information on fiber arts with dog fur, google "chiengora"...there are a ton of websites.

And for getting it out...I have one word: Furminator! Best $40 dog brush ever, so worth it! Best price I've found is on amazon. Somebody at work was given one and then everybody who used it wound up buying one and then I took it to my second job and two people there have bought them...you have to see it in action to appreciate how well it works.

I'll have to try that. I was using a shedding blade - the same kind you use on horses. It's good for loosening and lifting it out.

Once you get a furminator, you'll never use anything else... I have used slicker brushes, undercoat rakes, and shedding blades... the furminator will get out what they all left behind. ;)

Yep we use furminators at work.. they're great, but I really like the short toothed rakes we have.
