How long do you?
Hi, everyone!
I just would ask a question to you. :worship:
"How long do you play with your Ball python?"
Well, I know the sounds a bit silly.
But you keep BP and sometimes you hold them whne you clean the cage up, when you ckeck the weight, the length, the condition etc.
And you would do some skinship with him/her soemtimes.
Royal Pythons are nervous, shy and sensitive animal.
Still how long do you touch him/her? and how often? :fishslap:
I don`t touch so often my BP, Poopy.
She`s just come to my house last week.
-
Re: How long do you?
i usually "play" with mine for as long as i have to.sometimes it might be 10 minutes, sometimes it might be an hour.depending on how active he is.

I "handle" my snakes at the minumum of 15 minutes as any longer can cause them to stress.I do this at the average of every couple days unless they just ate. Then i wait 2 days at least before i bother them.

Your BP still eating well with that? Wow!
-
Re: How long do you?
I also limit handling to about 15 to 30 minutes at a time, but I have fifteen, so no single one is really handled for that long more than once a week. They all pretty much get a quick handling every few days just to check out their general condition, make sure bellies are clean, scales look good, etc.
-
Re: How long do you?
I handle her for just a very few minutes usually, on those occasions when I'm cleaning the tub or weighing her or whatnot. I check out her belly, vent, and face just to make sure everything is healthy...and just enjoy the feel of her for a few minutes, then let her go back home.
Only once a week at most...often only about every other week or so...do I take her out just for the sake of taking her out. Then its usually for 10-15 minutes of "playtime"....but every once in a while, she'll fall asleep draped over my shoulders and I'll just leave her there for as long as she's comfy. Those are my favorite times.

Right. I do not handle my Poopy two days after she ate some food. That is my rule.
Do you think ball python get tame with human without stress? without refusing food? without fear? when you keep him/her for a while like for a year?

you cant really "tame" a snake.it's more like they learn to tolerate people.some BP's might not like to be handled which is why they end up being fussy sometimes.

Re: How long do you?
OK stupid question alert: how can you tell if they're sleeping?

lol idk if they really "sleep" at all. but they might sleep with their eyes open.sometimes in the morning if i accidently bump into cages or something, they flinch and look around with the "wtf?" look on their face.

She stops moving and her tongue stops flicking and she just feels....relaxed. Makes me sleepy just thinking about it. LOL

I think it really depends on the snake. Each species has a typical temperment (such as ball pythons are generally shy and timid snakes) but each snake has its own individual temperment. Some are very laid back and don't seem to mind whatever interaction they get dragged into.....others are always nervous and flighty, no matter how "nice" we try to be with them.

And yes...they sleep. They just can't close their eyes when they do it. Their pupils will narrow down to the smallest point, though, to block out much of the light and visual input around them.

I guess based on the dialtion of their pupils relative to the ambient light. Plus I move my hand near them to see if they try and track it - if they don't I assume they are either asleep or not paying attention and tap the floor of the tank till they do to avoid surprising them. It's not critical or anything I just think it's rude to not do it.

Re: How long do you?
Another question.
How long do you stand up in front of the enclosure of your BP?
lol But serious.
How long do you watch your BP near the cage?
I think they might get some stress by only watching by us, a huge thing to them with huge eyes and the huge movement.
Well, you might stare at him/her with no movement.
But once you moved, he/she would stop the movement and he/she gasps.
..and sometimes he/she drops from a tree.. lol
-
Re: How long do you?
well i dont stand in front of the cage.my BP's cage is on the end of my room so when im laying on my bed watching tv or something,i can see him if he comes out.

So you mean you don`t go close to your BP house often? Just seeing from some distance? cool
How good their sight?
-
Re: How long do you?
unless im going to change his newspaper(like changing baby diapers) or give him fresh water, handle him, feed him, i dont really go near his home.unless i wanna check him out and get a good look at him.

Re: How long do you?
I think ball pythons are so sensitive animal most of the time.
But!
But when they bit a meal, they seem to change the personality. lol
I am not sure the gap that they show us between the most of the sentitive time and the very eager time.
While they are eating, they seem nothing to care of our exsistence.
They just concentrate. lol

Re: How long do you?
...but I am really thinking to buy "one way watching glass" in front of the cage! ( I don`t know what is called in English. It is used in a interrogating room in the Police. You can see a person next door from you but he cannot see you with the glass.)
I use the glass for my BP`s enclosure. Then she cannot see me and won`t get any stress in there.
-
Re: How long do you?
why would you want a 2-way mirror? BP's have poor vision so they cant even see you that well.
-
Re: How long do you?
Mine are on my headboard of my bed. I watch them a lot.

Oh, it is called "2-way mirror"!
Yes, just thinking. They use their pits around the lips more than sight, I know.
But my Poopy fell down from a tree twice when I approched near her cage.
She became being a ball of course. lol
(don`t worry she is okey. I thought she was surprised very much and thought need some defend.

I named my BP "Poopy".
I always thought Ball python look like Dog rather than snake from their colour and the face. They look like beagle dog!
So once I said "my BP is not snake! She is a puppy!"
But someway I have misstyped and the spell of "puppy" became "poppy"!
Someone asked me "why you named flower to your snake`s nickname?"
(there is flower called "poppy")
Then I got idea from that and I named my snake " Poopy"!
Yes! Her poop is massive (will be massive when she become an adult). So I decided to call her "Poopy"!
Is it bad name? But I like it! Sounds good! "Poopy"

To be honest i really dont think they ever get "tame" say like a dog or cat.I think they just feel safe and know we can not or will not hurt them.

Re: How long do you?
Hmm after reading the last 4 pages it seems that i handle my little guy way more often then most of you. Letting him out for an hour or so at a time on my bed or i put a blanket over the couch to keep him out of cracks and he explorers the area until he finds a good spot to curl up. He'll stay their for about 10 min and then hes up looking around again, i sware he watches TV. He can be out for an hour and then i put a paper towel in his tank and take out his water dish, set him on the paper towel and hes ready to eat. Strikes everytime so idunno i must have a laid back couch potato, hes just like me ;)

Re: How long do you?
Wow, my snake gets handled a lot more than most peoples'as well. She'll easily stay on my neck/shoulders for an hour at a time. I took her shopping with me the other day and she was fine. We went to two reptile stores looking at hides and food and stuff for her. She wraps twice around my neck and puts her head on my shoulder facing backwards barely out of my hair and just people watches. She even sat there in the car. I had a box for her so she wouldnt freak out but she climbed out of the box and got on me.
She did the weirdest thing while we were in the store too. She uncurled a little and started rubbing her head on my face. I was a little confused and didnt move for a minute. I even asked the guy, "what's she doing?" and all he said was, "She knows who her mommy is." ...Just thought it was strange. She hasnt done it since.
But yeah, she's content to sit in my lap while I watch tv and she'll get under the covers if she's on the bed. Got herself stuck behind my computer desk once, and my BFs a computer geek so he had so many wires back there for all kinds of stuff, that I couldnt tell her from the equipment. Eventually she poked her head out from behind the moniter, wiggled across the desk and onto my arm.
She's always been handled a lot. I think she's grown to expect it.

That`s interesting to hear. :)
How long have you kept her so far?

yeah, honestly I used this word means what you mentioned exactly for reptitles.
Snakes won`t be tamed, I know but some of them can be domested with human as a pet. I just wanted to know how Royal Pythons are.

Re: How long do you?
I have had her for a few months. She belonged to someone else for 4 years prior.

I'm sorry, but I just have to step in here. While everyone will make their own choices about how much stress to risk on their snake by taking them on outings or whatever...that's your choice. But to drive with a snake loose in the car (or able to get loose) is asking for very serious trouble. Please, please...if you feel the need to go for a car ride with her again...get a bag (inside-out pillowcase works great) to put her in and tie it securely closed...then put that bag into a snugly insulated box so it won't shift around during the ride.
Just imagine...you're driving down the road...and she slithers out of her box...but instead of coming to you, she goes the other way and quickly disappears down below the seats. Maybe you didn't even notice that she'd gotten out and she has lots of time to get to any number of places in the car where you'll have a heck of a time finding her and getting her out again. And that's just the "light" side of things that could happen....
Snake gets under your feet and pedals while the car is moving...
Snake freaks out and bites or even just strikes while the car is moving...freaks driver out (reflex startle reaction) and causes an accident...
Snake crawls up behind the dash panel where the engine compartment is "oh so warm..."
Cop pulls you over for some minor violation and sees a snake in the car and freaks out...
Snake crawls under the seats and gets up inside the seats, causing you to need to remove the seats and maybe even rip up the fabric to get to it....IF...that is...you even know she's in there........
I hope you get the picture. ;) :P I have other opinions about the wisdom of taking a snake "shopping"....but that's just my opinion and I'll keep it to myself. But the loose snake in the car....those scenarios aren't opinions....that's a high-risk situation for you...your pet...and other people on the road.

Re: How long do you?
Golgo I just have to say how impressed I am with your grasp of the written english language. Your posts are wonderful and it's a great thing to see even more people from around our big world joining BPNet. :)
Now I also wanted to follow-up on Judy's comments about driving around with a snake loose in the car. Her points are very well made and I hope those reading do pay mind to them. As well as a responsible snake owner you must always think of how your individual actions in public affect all the rest of us. There are new laws EVERY day being presented and passed to limit our rights to own snakes. These laws are often brought forth because of someone's poor decisions that have scared the general public, caused a problem or gotten someone hurt.
I've read that there are places in the U.S. where it's now illegal to have a simple cornsnake because of laws that include them under "constrictors". The fact is the general public is often nervous of our snakes and as much as we should educate and promote responsible, caring snakekeeping we must also remember that every action in public with our snakes is seen and noted. What you choose to do can affect my rights so I ask each of you to choose wisely and remember there is a larger community of people that don't want to see our rights curtailed anymore than they already are.

Re: How long do you?
Gib you really can't visually tell they are sleeping other than they don't flick their tongues and appear relaxed. We have developed certain habits with our snakes (snakes are BIG on routine). When we want to handle them or not startle them while cage cleaning, we simply reach in and gently stroke them down their lower body, avoiding the head and after awhile they know this means we are there and going to lift them out. If you do something over and over and over again with a BP most of them will recognize this simple routine as meaning something to them.
As for being tame, watch your snake eat - that's power and instinct and it's been going on long before you ever existed. This is not a "tame" pet, this is a snake with all the wonderful instincts nature gave it. Even born captive, I don't believe snakes are ever fully tame nor should be. I hope every one of my snakes retains it's wild nature as in allowing me to interact with it, I get great pleasure and respect for these gorgeous creatures. I've always considered it one of the greatest gifts in my life when one of our snakes allows me to share it's daily life. :)
