Woody... what are you doing?
Ummmm.........????? I drove by this house and saw this guy acting strange. Went home, got the camera... and it was still there... almost like it was trying to get into the car? Or a distressed baby???? :( I snapped a few pix before the home owner called the po-po... lol They are not too good but you get the idea...
Not even sure what sub-species it is, or if I should call a rehab????

Re: Woody... what are you doing?
Poor thing! Maybe his foot got stuck in the plastic of the winow or something? He looks scared :( I hope the little guy's alright. He does look like a youngster, though.
EDIT: He also seems to be all about his reflection...maybe a young guy trying to defend some terretory against another "young guy" (his reflection?)???
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
did they call the cops on you for snapping pics? or did they call the cops on a bird?
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
Nope, not stuck.... I watched long enough to make sure that it was "Mobil"... it actually move to a low branch of a near bye tree... that's when I left. I didn't want to leave if it was grounded... (ez dog/cat target)... It still looked really lost????

No! :P I left BEFORE lol.... I would freak if I looked out of my window and saw some chick, in a misfits T- snapping pix of my car! :8:
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
OK... I re-read my original post.... I see that it looked like the police WERE called... but no, lol.... I didn't even see the home owner! :P Sorry for the confusion!!!

Hm...that whole wing-spreading in the first photo looks like a displaying thing to me (though I have no idea if male woodpeckers vying for territory "display")--was he being agressive with his reflection in the car?
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
Actually yes... he made a few pecks at it. Wonder if it was a male seeing his own reflection?

that was my thought too!
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
Looks like he is thinking it's another bird by the reflection and is trying to "fight" it.
At the horse farm where I ride at, they have a few pea:cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:. They are ALWAYS around our cars pecking and hitting them. We usually try to chase them away since they have been known to 1. leave dents. 2. chip the paint. 3. hurt their beaks. They do this in breeding season.
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
Right? lol.... I wonder where the phrase "Bird Brain" came from......
Poor silly things!
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
LOL , thats one nutty woody woodpecker :rolleye2:
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
That's a Pileated Woodpecker. It's more likely trying to defend its territory against the intruder in the car, lol. I love these guys. We don't have many here, so I'm thrilled every time I see or hear one. Pileated Woodpeckers are closely related to the Ivory-billed woodpecker too. Sorry, rambling a bit here, but those guys are my all time favorite woodpecker.:D
Re: Woody... what are you doing?
Great to know!! If I ever see him again, I'll try to get more pix for you! :) He was stunning in person, and much larger than any one I've ever seen!
