whats wrong with that...everyone I have ever met, except for breeders have more than one snake in a tank.
Personally when you start having tons of rubbermaids...it isnt a pet anymore...just a piece of property. But i guess it depends on what you want.

Re: Nuff Said!!!
ya thats wrong, but no a 5o gal tank is not to big for an adult.. we got 2 40 gal breeder tanks...

I will put the care and love for my snakes (50+ in rubbermaid tubs) against anyones. They are by far more than just a piece of property.

All that aside.. My snakes aren't property they are pets and I treat them as such. They become property when the owner no longer cares about them as pets the number owned doesn't play into it.

I'm knowing that they were housed in a situation that loads of people view as exceptable. But we know to be a far less than ideal house arrangement for this type animal.
-
Re: Nuff Said!!!
he might be downsizing though...keeping the hides for his next animal. My roommate did that just advertised what he was actually selling. The tank is huge, he might want smaller and the lamp really isnt needed.

Exactly!! The fact that I keep them in tubs in racks has nothing to do with it. I spend more time with my snakes and rodents then I do with my wife. LOL!!

That's a pretty outrageous claim to make, how did you form that opinion? Personal experience?

According to whom? Mine are all pets.
What's wrong with housing two snakes in one enclosure? Because they do not need nor desire to be housed together and one will be dominated by the other, which will cause stress to the one being dominated.

Which is EXACTLY the problem!
If everyone you know except the your close friends was running around killing everyone, that means its all ok since only a few people are doing the right thing and everyone else is doing the wrong thing?
EDIT: Breeders ARE the ones with more then one in a tank cause they are BREEDING!

Re: Nuff Said!!!
Sorry for offending anyone...that is just how I view it...you guys im sure treat them all nicely, but to me...i just kind of see it like...I wouldnt put my 1000$ dog in a 5.99$ dog house. Thats just me not meaning to criticize you all...hopefully you can see where my logic lies, but then again I only have one snake.
-
Re: Nuff Said!!!
Oh heck, if the dog liked the dog house you would! Man, I love it when I can get by giving my pets the cheapest solutions and they don't suffer because of it... are you going to tell us next that using tupperwares and terra cotta pots for hides is bad too because they didn't come from the pet store?
just my opinion

Re: Nuff Said!!!
The reason people put them in tubs is:
#1 Saves TONS of space
#2 Temps and humidity are easier to control
#3 Snakes arent hamsters, they dont need a play area.
#4 Cleaning is easier
BTW: My dog gets a huge thrill out of soda boxes, they are free and she loves them to death, you telling me since I am giving her carboard to play with and was free, that her enjoyment isnt real and she doesnt enjoy just the same?

Using your same analogy you wouldn't put 2 $1000 dogs in the same cage either...would you? Each animal deserves its own space. Just like with dogs there is ALWAYS an Alpha animal that will dominate the other, and your snakes are no different (whether or not you view them as property or pets)

No offense taken, from your reasoning, it is clear that you have no experience with the type of caging you are criticising.
When you have a large group of ball pythons, it would be incredibly time consuming to clean and maintain that large group if they were all kept in individual aquariums or other large, naturalistic enclosures.
While you or others may not like the appearance of a rack system or plastic tub setup, for me, its about the health of the snakes and not the appearance of the enclosure.

But what if you had 400 dogs would you still spend say 150.00 a house for each dog or would you find a more budget friendly way to keep them. Keeping balls in tanks is great I did it when I had two snakes (one snake one tank). But I now have 20 snakes and I spend the same on a complete home-made rack for 10 snakes that I did on one tank set up. Its a space and money thing with me I don't have the space or the money for 20 tanks.

The price of tubs has nothing to do with it. Tubs hold heat and humidity much better than tanks do. I had my first snake in a tank - he fasted for 8 months because the temps and humidity never stayed steady. Now he's in a tub, and eats every week. Which enclosure is better for him? The more expensive glass tank with incorrect husbandry, or the more economical tub that holds heat and humidity perfectly?
Are you suggesting he was better cared for in an enclosure that he wouldn't eat in because it cost more, or one that provides him perfect temps, humidity and the security he needed?
The same argument can be made with housing two snakes in one glass enclosure. Are you going to spend $1000 on a snake and put it in the same glass enclosure with another because you're not willing to spend the money to get a second proper set-up?

I put my snakes in tubs because it is healthier for them. Also I put my 2,500.00 dollar show dog in a fifty dollar ex pen for sleeping. What your not totally understanding is that it's the care they receive, not the fancy digs. Fancy housing is not always best. Quality care and conditioning is more important, that includes quality food. A 50 gal. tank is difficult to clean, thereby people tend to clean less. Also a tank that big can be a real headache holding temps and humidity levels right. Believe me, my showdogs are not showdogs because they have a fancy dog house or bed. We buy yardsale blankets so it doesn't cost us a fortune buying enough to be able to wash and change out often enough. This is not an attack on you, just a line to show you a different perspective on why people use alternate types of housing.:sunny:

...umm, I totally disagree with this statement. I have 16 snakes...11 of which were ball pythons. I kept them in tanks, and when I built my rack and swithced them to tubs, it was the best move I coulda made for both me and the snakes. Also, I would NEVER even consider a single one of my snakes a piece of property.....EVER. I love them all dearly......each and every one.I also think other breeders who have many more snakes than I do can attest to this as well.:colbert:

I do know he feels that way. :D I think thats what makes him the great guy and respectable breeder that he is. witcha bad self Jedi Wysocki.

Re: Nuff Said!!!
Listen you have got to love this animal to be a good breeder. end of story.
-
Re: Nuff Said!!!
where would i put 28 tanks (which technically isnt really proper for a ball) into my room and afford to properly heat them and clean them.
instead i have 28 snakes in 10$ tubs not 2.79$ ones in a rack system and to top it off i use newspaper for bedding i must really hate my possessions(i mean animals)

If you have an opinion don't pretend you don't, but don't think that just because you formed an opinion that people who have been doing this longer then you don't know more about it then you do.
I'm not sure I'm offended but most of my animals are in tubs and all of them are kept singly. I also never think that a living creature is a possession. I know you meant no harm, and no one's attacking you so don't take it that way, it's just that many people have believed like you that whatever you can keep however many snakes together, and although it may work sometimes, other times it ends in disaster. And I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather do what's best for my naturally solitary(except for breeding) animals and not have to worry about anything I don't need to. Just my thoughts, disregard or listen as you see fit.
