Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
Yeah I get them super bad...throwing up the whole 9 yards...I always have :(
I've always found that aromatherapy and accupuncture work well....good luck to you...god it can be hell :(
-
Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
yep, hell aint thw word for mine though,ii got one so bad once that i fell to the ground in agony with it,it only lasted 5 minutes but i puked my guts up after it, and after that i was fine but it was the worst one i ever got, i couldnt see or nothin.
-
Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
i get them pretty bad sometimes and i really haven't found any medication as of yet that totally gets rid of them. usually i double up on the prescription med and then take advil on top of it--sometimes that does the trick but not always. it's pretty crazy how debilitating they can be, but luckily i don't get the really horrid ones too often.

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
A friend of mine had these for quite awhile until she went to go see her doctor. They did a sleep study and found some abnormal brain waves that indicated seizure-like activity. So she's on a seizure medication as well as lord knows what(Yay ADD/ADHD/wheel spinning but hamster is dead, etcetc). Seems to be helping as she doesn't have the headaches anymore or trouble sleeping.
Maybe ask your doctor?

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?

Yeah I can hear my pulse loud as hell in my left ear...I mean really I'm to young to be having these issues!!
-
Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
i hate the pulse thing, everytime i lay down to sleep, all i hear is psh psh psh kinda sound, its annoying when trying to sleep or just relaxin, its only when its quiet i hear it.in only 24 and i got the problems of a 74 yr old.
-
Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
hahahahah I hear that..well I sort of hear it..can you speak up?? No I'm kidding it isnt that bad and like you said...tinitus is at its worst when its quiet..I play music in the back ground ALOT to keep from hearing it...also having a toddler its never really quiet...but yeah its hard to live with it...your always hearing something...there never is complete silence :( I can only imagine my life when I am a senior
-
Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
maybe by then we will be deaf as door nails and cant hear a thing so it wont bother us at all.oh yeah, the worse thing about tinitus is that theres no cure.i took 6 courses of anti-biotics for it when i was a kid(3 were tablets and 2 were drops) and it did nothin.

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
Check out Maxalt or Imitrex. They both work, but I've been taking Maxalt for years with great results.

I had/have the same problems. my nosebleeds stopped when i was about 20, though the ringing and pressure behind the eyes still happens. ask your doc about "Meiners disease". runs in my family unfortunately. causes the ringing in the ears, fluid buildup, LOTS of ear infections as a kid, and can (and in my case IS) lead to hearing loss, and extreme vertigo. I get so dizzy sometimes I cant even get comfort by laying in bed...the whole darn room spins and I KNOW I'm not drunk this time :)

I'll spare you my medical misery list unless you ask, but suffice it to say when I had my first back surgery, my doc told me I had the body of a 65 year old...I was 24. if you want the whole list, ask, otherwise I wont make everyone sit through my ailments lol

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
totally forgot to post my reply about the migraines. hehe
I have been getting them for about 15 years or so now, and some get so bad I have ended up in the ER getting a shot of morphine.
my sister has VERy severe migraines and takes Imitrex and swears by it. I was put on vicodan, verapimil, which is used mostly for high blood pressure but also works for migraines, and then sometimes on top of that I would take excedrin
-
Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
I get em pretty bad. I have tried maxalt, and it works well.
I was also on depekote for a while (an anti seizure medication) because my dr thought I was bi-polar. That drug helps with seizures, bipolar disorder, and migrains I guess. I did not get one migrain while I was on it. I wouldnt wonder if that is what your friend is on Becky.
I know how bad they can be. I get em and I have to sit in the darkest room possible with my head down and just wait the buggers out.
Strangley enough, throwing up does seem to help.
Anywho, good luck finding something that works...
edit: (if you are looking something non-perscription, try excedrin migrain)

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
omg! This is a great thread. I have been suffering from migraines since I was a teen. I have gone to MANY doctors. About 5 years ago I went to this one doctor in hopes he would have the answers I need! He told me to stop taking ibuprofin because I was taking enough that it could be lethal! I was taking 8 pills at a time at least 4-5 times a day!!! I am telling you my head HURT! So he put me on all these meds...muscle relaxers...narcotics..anti seizure meds...anti-depressants...you name it! I had a pharmacy on my nightstand! well, he sent me to get all these tests run..MRI, CT, x-rays even therapy! Nothing! I found out I have TMJ...which was some of the problem but from where my headaches were that could not be the total problem. well, needless to say I started taking the pills like crazy to get rid of the headaches! I finally went to a Doctor and he said I was suffering from rebound headaches from all the meds I was taking! So they wanted to put me in the hospital and detox me but I did not go for that! I have 3 kids, a hubby, and a house to run! So I took it upon myself to go off the pills. and though I still have migraines, they are not as often or as bad. Now If I get one I go to a dark, quiet room and I take a cold compress and lay it on the part of my head that hurts the most. I may have to pop a couple tylenol but that is way better than the bagillion pills I was taking! I think stress is a major factor in headaches/migraines also. I stopped letting the "little stuff" get to me. And it helps ALOT!
on a side note...I took imitrex once. My doctor said it shouldn't bother me too much. Well, it did! I could not even see straight! They think I had a major reaction to it! So I will not take that again!
Topomax is a anti seizure med that I was on and it does help. but it will also make you lose weight.
I woke up with a killer headache this morning :(

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
Knock on wood - I've only had one migraine in my life, and hope I never have another one. I had just flown back home, Karl picked me up at night and let's say it's a good thing he was driving, the headlights coming from the opposite direction would have killed me - I got to at least close my eyes and told him not to even talk, just get me home.

Re: Antone suffer from migraines here?
WOW. To believe that my nemesis has appeared on here. I hate these things. I started learning about these things when I was 18 and got my first one. I was driving to college to set up my schedule for my first semester when I got one while I was driving. I didn't know what I was, but I stopped and bought some Tylonol. Well I found out that didn't work when I blacked-out and woke up doing 95 mph in the grass in the middle of the interstste, about 300 yards from a bridge. What a horrible experience.
Over the next few years I had CT's MRI's and everything the doctors could think of. I tried muscle relaxers because they thought it was stress and was even put on steroids at one point, don't remember what that doctor thought. I finally got one while on deployment with the Marine Corps, and the Navy Doctor gave me something called Midrin. This was the best thing that I ever got. However, I have never been able to find a medication that works without me having to go to sleep to get rid of them. Midrin is not as easy to find now, but I have also found Duradrin to be just as effective. I have tried Imitrex, but that didn't work.
Now I typically am hospitalized when I get one of these, due to dehydration from throwing up so much and for the severe pain. Due to my being deathly allergic to Morphine and Codeine, they usuualy give me Demorall. About five years ago I started getting new symptoms with my migraines and this made my mother nervous. Now, before I get a migraine, three symptoms occur in order: first my arms will start to go numb, then the lower portion of my face goes numb and then my sight becomes severly restricted like tunnel vision. Well this made my mom force me to go get another battery of tests. She sent to a doctor that is a friend of the family. He wanted to draw some blood, what's new. I'm glad he did, as he was able to find something that many other doctors never did. What he found was that my Cardio CRP was too high. What is that you ask, it is the viscosity of your blood. Now in case some of you do not know how a migraine works the blood vessels in your brain constrict, causing a rduction in blood flow and a higher blood pressure. This is where the pain comes from. Well add thick blood to the mix, and you get an even higher preesure which equals more pain. This doctor told me that if I took one aspirin every morning, that the chance of getting a migraine waas greatly reduced, and he was right. Now I get about 1 a year, and have not had a severe one since.
Hope that may have helped someone to alleviate the great pain suurounding this horrible condition.

You should ask your doctor for a sample of Maxalt. It's the same type of drug as Imitrex, but there aren't as many side effects. BTW, I experienced the same thing as you... I was taking ibuprofen by the handfuls and eventually I had a severe reaction. It turns out that it was affecting my liver pretty bad. Pain relievers actually do very little for my migraines, even codeine and vicodin will only relieve it for a couple of hours, but then it comes back with a vengeance. Now I get by with daily high-blood pressure medication (verapamil) to keep the migraines at bay and only have to take Maxalt about once a week.

Actually, most of the pain from a migraine comes when the blood vessels dilate. Here's a quote I found that sums it up better than I could:
"Here's more-or-less science's best idea of what happens physically during an attack: First, blood vessels serving posterior, ventral brain areas constrict much smaller than they should, due to a variety of triggers partially listed below. Note that vasoconstriction also causes many garden-variety headaches, but with migraine the constriction serves as a predecessor to what actually causes the pain. Next, nerves in the meninges, a layer of tissue surrounding the brain, sense the constriction and signal the blood vessels to dilate. The vessels then do so, but because they had constricted so much, they overcompensate and dilate much more than necessary. The throbbing, sickening, unholy migraine pain is caused by too much blood rushing too quickly through the vessels themselves, doing them additional damage."

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
I blacked out from a migraine once when i was in school,i fell down a bank of mud near a staircase outside, and then i woke up.nobody even knew what happened.i usually take something with codeine in it,they usually hit migraines fairly quick. oh yeah, cheers for correcting the title, didnt know how to change the spellin.
-
Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
blah, maxalt and imitrex don't do anything for me. i need to try something else, but i guess i'm lucky in that i don't get them so badly that i throw up or pass out or anything. painkillers in general don't really work on me--my mom is the same way. :( you could give us morphine all day and we'd never know the difference. please, just knock me out and wake me when it's over!
-
Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
ikm the same,i took so many painkillers years ago for migraines that iv grown imune to most of them.but usually something with codeine works pretty well.
pure codeine would be class but you cant get it here and its an opiate so its just as addictive as heroine so it would be to risky to get it.

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
I have gotten about 3 migraines in my life. Usually the trigger for me is, staying out too late (with or without drinking involved..), then getting not enough sleep but having to wake up early, and it usually being hot and sunny out the next morning. Ouch.. I just lie in the dark and sit it out; motrin seems to help marginally but not enough to get rid of it.
Now, tinnitus! I am suffering horribly from it right now, because Mark's band played last night and I still can't hear. I hope that they stop ringing soon.. :(

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
What a coinkidink! I woke up in the middle of the night last night with a smallish migraine, so I took some advil(like 6) and now it's gone! My liver is probably comparable to that of an alcoholic's, the way I take advil for everything. :8:

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
Mike developed horrible migraines year before last...really scary stuff. My hubby is a tough guy but I've never seen anything like the pain that would hit him out of the blue. All sorts of tests as developing this suddenly well into your thirties can indicate major problems. Then the poor guy nearly had a stroke from the meds given to control the migraines! Turns out it was all traceable back to another med he was taking that triggered the migraines in the first place. Adjustment of that med....no more migraines and a HUGE sigh of relief for the whole family.
-
Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
Yes, I get them, and have off and on for yeeeeeeeears, but have only experienced one that had an aura before hand.
My sister is on medication for both the classic and the chronic ones. Mine are usually triggered by working all night, being up all the next day, & not eating or drinking (winter or summer, but summer is worse b/c of the heat) b/c I'm busy running errands, cleaning house, :blahblah: :blahblah: I can also get them with weather changes. Storm fronts moving in from the coast and the associated atm pressure changes will trigger one. Sometimes it's the way I sleep, and getting a knot in the back of my neck and head.
Allison my sister, gets emotional/puking sick with 'em. Me, I'm usu. just light and pressure sensative, to the point that even my pillow hurts my head. If 2-3 extra strength excedrin don't work or those WITH ibuprofen, then it's 1/2 a perc and sleep.
Allison told me about the specialist she goes to. There's some drug that they give ppl as a preventative....you take it all the time, as a therapy, instead of waiting for the killer pain and try to end it. Her Dr. told her that if you're so much in pain you're taking meds like that, then it's too late. You need to take them BEFORE the pain becomes debilitating.
I have the name of the family of drugs written down somewhere and will try to find it and post it here. Maybe that will help someone at some future time.

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
I have fibro, and TMJ. The jaw disorder can set off a tremedoud amount of pain in my face, the tension of that pain sets off the migraines, which I am also prone to.
One thing that has DEFINITELY helped me with the migrianes(I mean the ones that will last longer than a full day, complete with retching and wishing for an ax murderer to show up and put you out of your misary) is rosymary oil.
You apply a bit on your carotid arteries, and perhaps on your temples. You'll feel sleepy, and you MUST go sleep. Not lying down means you'll not get rid of the migraine. Once asleep, you'll stay asleep a couple hours, maybe three... then you're going to wake up hungry, without the migraine.
Yes, it means you have to nap for 2-3 hours.. but it works. And having tried napping without the oil applied, all I got was more nauseous, until I got up to vomit again, the rosemary seems to dull everything out, and let's me go to sleep, then it relaxes the tension in the blood vessels somehow. At least that's what I was told, I don't care about anything other than the fact that it works.
Haven't found anything to help with the fibro pain yet. Wish I could.

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
I feel for you. I've had migraines since I was about 7 or 8. They thought it was my eyes so they gave me glasses. Didn't help. I find the best way is to just get a cold washcloth and turn the lights off. Sometimes it sucks though when you are at work. My face gets really pale and I get nauseated. I suppose you can always take Imitrex. I'm just not a big fan of medications.

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
Wolfy you need to be mixing that rosemary oil with a carrier oil...here's a bit of a write up on it.
Aromatherapy Tip of the Month
~ Rosemary Oil for Migraine Headaches~
http://www.c-potenz.de/Mittel/Rosmarinus-off.jpgAre you a migraine headache sufferer? You may find some comfort in this simple aromatherapy tip using Rosemary Oil.
Rosemary Essential Oil ( Rosmarinus officinalis) is a clear, refreshing, widely available and affordable essential oil with dozens of beneficial therapeutic properties.
At the onset of a migraine heachache, mix 10 drops of Rosemary Oil with one ounce of carrier oil (olive oil, almond oil, or other vegetable oil) and massage into your head, face, and neck. (It's an even better idea to have this pre-mixed so it's right at hand when you need it!) Give yourself time to relax with this massage, preferably lying down in the dark.
Another alternative is to place a few drops of Rosemary Oil in a cool foot bath. Again, take time to relax with this.
If you are unable to use these methods (at work or away from home), place a few drops of Rosemary oil on a tissue and inhale at short intervals. Keep a bottle of Rosemary at your desk for this purpose. Peppermint and chamomile are also good general headache remedies when used in this way.
As always, never use essential oils on the skin without first diluting them with a carrier oil. Do not use rosemary oil if pregnant or if you suffer from epilepsy or high blood pressure.
(from www.earthlygood.com)
Wolfy I listen to this guy weekly on a radio show (Dave Foreman, The Herbal Pharmicist). Here's a link from his website for fibro suffers that I hope might be of some help to you. It's such a complex disease and often disregarded by the mostly male physician group (since a lot of suffers are put off as being women looking for attention sort of thing). Hopefully a homeopathic approach might be useful to you in alleviating some of the symptoms.

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
Ive been getting bad migraines since I was a kid myself. I was on a prescription migraine blocker for about 2 years - can't remember the exact name as that was some time ago, but something like Allananol or Propananol - something like that anyway. It helped reduce the frequency that I got them, but it's most noticable side affect was depression - not much of a trade off really - so my parents finally took me off of it.
While I was on that, the docs had also given me 2 other prescriptions to help when a migraine actually hit. One was codeine (dunno if I spelled that right) which I took when a full-blown migraine hit. Pretty much just knocked me out cold. The other was a pill they told me to take the instant I felt like a migraine was coming - it was called caffergotte (again - probably not spelled anywhere close to right). When I got a little older I did some internet research - and sure enough that pill that they had me taking when I felt a migraine coming on was nothing but pure caffeine. Turns out caffeine can help block migraines in some situations - at least thats what they believed back in the day - don't know if they still do.
I realize caffeine has its own health concerns - but with the hours I keep these days, I live on caffeine - cup of coffee somewhere in reach at almost all times....and I'll be darned if the amount of migraines I get hasn't gone *way* down. Don't know if the 2 things are linked - or if I just outgrew the migraines.....but I'll take a few cups of coffee over a migraine any day...

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
I am not sure if the headaches I get are migraines or what, but it begins with pressue behind my eye. Usually the left, sometimes the right and then makes it way to the middle of whatever temple on the side where the pain is. I then get sick to my stomach, stick neck, etc. Never threw up yet. I refuse to eat while my head hurts that much. I've only gotten them the past 7-8 weeks. 4 or 5 times so far. They hurt like hell, nothing seems to help. I just bought excredin migraine so I need to try that out. i am not sure what usually causes them but the pressure behind my eye is an oncoming sympthom. I've googled it an came up with Cluster Headaches and Migraines...so I dunno...

Re: Anyone suffer from migraines here?
Layna,
What you're describing could be a migraine. There are also stress headaches that could be started that way. Some of my migraines are that very thing, but you'll need to keep an activities/migraine diary and talk to a dr. to pinpoint WHAT sort of headache it is.
If you're into the aromatherapies, I use a Migra-Stick. Basically it's lavendar and peppermint oils in a roller ball application. I get it at the natural supplements store where I buy my vitamins. If you use it, just be careful NOT to use it too close to your eyes (like run-off from your temples). One of mine, the ball seat was cracked, so I got A LOT!! of oil and didn't know it. As it warmed and ran, I got it in my eye. :( NOT FUN!
Those and the Migra-Ice mentholated pads you can buy help too.
