First babies have arrived !!!
Well after a lot of research, reading and lots and lots of help from everyone on BP.net my first babies have hatched.
The first little boy to crawl out :)

Thinking about coming out (even at this age they are shy and pulled back in when I opened the top)

Great Biology Picture - the attached egg candled DOA but never seperated from the good egg...but didn't cause any issues.

Expecting all Normals - but they are really cute just the same :D

Thanks Robin...if feels really cool. After stressing over this and that (and every little thing) it was a great feeling to see the first one pop his head out.
He ended up staying in the egg for 3 days before he came all the way out on his own...and tried to crawl into one of the other's egg :D

It was a blast to watch this past week...my wife and 2 kids were constantly wanting to check on them to see if he had come out further and what the other 2 were doing. My 3 year old was screaming and jumping up and down today when he saw the boy had crawled out...needless to say EVERYONE came running :D

Beautyfull!!
Why did you choose to put the eggs on the substrate using the plastic instead of in the substrate?

It is called the Substrate-less method. So it is peralite and water with grate overtop. The benefit is 100% humidity but nothing wet touches the eggs...so the risk of mixing the vermiculite incorrectly (too wet/ too dry) or it drying out is gone. Though I don't have a comparison I liked how this worked out so plan to stay with it. :)

Re: First babies have arrived !!!
Ok thanks!
100% hatch rate?

Re: First babies have arrived !!!
How wonderful, Sean!!! What an awesome experience and adorable babies! Thanks for sharing the pics and letting us live vicariously through you! :D
-
Re: First babies have arrived !!!
Oh wow, congratulations! I am excited for you! I've heard normals or not, that when that first little head pops out it is out of this world. Let us know how they do.
I'm glad you mentioned the mom being shy...because I was worried about that with Chimera. She can be a real big baby sometimes. I feel better now though :)

Re: First babies have arrived !!!
all normals huh, were you expecting anything special? They cute, def surprised to see their weight though. I just bought a female from my shop and she is only 58g. Had no idea they came of the egg at that weight *sniffle sniffle* my little girl is so young.
Grats on the new kids! :carrot: :sunny:

Re: First babies have arrived !!!
Hmm, I'm pretty sure that I already know the answer to this question, but BP's are not temperature sex dependant, correct? I've had experience hatching baby leo's, so that's why I was wondering.

Thanks...yup all normals and that was all I was expecting from her. I was hoping for some more girls and got 2 so I am happy. :)
As for the weights, I agree that pet shops will be getting a lot of CH babies right now and they will be really small...but they are sooo cute at this age (especially with the pink coloration - which won't last :( )

You are correct sex is not determined by temperature...but (and someone please correct me if I am wrong) the female is who determines the sex (unlike humans where the male does)

Re: First babies have arrived !!!
Can anyone guess which one is my favorite? :D
-
Re: First babies have arrived !!!
Lord jackel...how did you get the sexes...or better yet how do you find out at that young?
-

I popped them after I cleaned them up (though they still pooped all over me :D ).
NOTE: at this age it is very easy to hurt them so you need to have someone with experience show you.

>.< I find that extremely wierd that they label their sex chromosomes with Z's and W's. lol. Why not just stick with the X's and Y's? How many chromosomes do BP's have anyway? Just curious really. i'm thinking about switching my major to Zoology and focusing on Herpetology. It would be cool to start getting into herp genetics also, which is another reason for me to start playing around with breeding/morphs ^^

Here is a great wiki on Ball Python Genetics (written by one of our own BP.net'ers...not sure it will answer all your questions but gives a great overview. :)

What you can't see it? Do you have invisible mode turned on on your computer? You need Windows Vista 2007 Revision 12, 4th edition. :rolleye2:

Sorry about that.:)
