Made a gas chamber today *DU*
I had yet another experience on the last feeding day in which a rat did not die instantly when "whacking" it. I felt bad for it so I decided to build a gas chamber for this time around and I must say, they did seem to go more peacefully. It was very efficient, clean, and faster then I thought it would be. I just pack some dried ice into the bottle and close the lid to the tub. Much easier and in my opinion kinder then whacking.

Here are a couple of pics:

I made seperate chambers so they arent crawling all over each other and freaking out. I drilled a bunch of holes to ensure the gas is getting in and I am not dragging things out...

"Grow a pair"? How about you grow up? If you like seeing injured mice flailing around in pain, then maybe you should invest in a psychiatrist. And if your BPs are refusing food on a more than very occasional basis, you should perhaps check your husbandry practices.

    Thanks fish mommy :)

I was surprised at how easily I could put one together and how well it works. I wish I would have made one a long time ago.

What an awesome setup, Van! Looks a lot simpler than I thought it would be, very encouraging.

Great Setup Van! Did you find you needed all those containers filled with Dry Ice or just some of them? Also, are you adding water to the DI or just letting it melt naturally?

Oh no, I actually put the mice in the containers. Only the bottle had dried ice in it. I did put a little water in it, but after reading other posts it seems like you don't need to. Too much CO2 apparently causes stress and gasping. So next time I am going without water. I may end up switching from the bottle to a more open container for the dried ice too. I dunno we'll see.

Thank you all for the compliments! :)

sorry for not commenting on your setup before... but its seems like you put a lot of thought into it, and I'm glad it's working for you, I think the one mouse per container thing is a great idea, but depending on the amount of mice gassed, time consume. anyway, great setup, glad its working

How much dry ice did you put in there? I assume it wouldn't take much but just curious.

I filled the bottle about half way then put a little water in. I think putting the water in put out a bit too much CO2 though. There was some gasping going on.
Next time I am going to try without water.

I REALLY like the idea of seperate containers like that. It seems you put a lot of thought into what would make the animals as comfortable as possible, and actually put the extra effort to do it. And yah, that's hot.
