    Whats better setup?
Glass aquarium type of tank or wooden with glass front?

I herd that the wooden one can pick up bacteria in the wood and its bad for the snake. I am curious on how its going to pick up the bacteria.

I am in the process of buying a glass terrarium already set up for my BP it has undertank heat pad with thermometer, and bunch of other goodies.

But I am curious if I should re-use my old tank for another BP or should I dispose of it. I will post a pic of it and if someone could please tell what I should do. Thanks

Is that what your snake is in now? With exposed lights?

If so, you need to get those lights out, or put a shield up around them, or you will end up with a burned snake eventually.

I can't really comment on glass or wood vivs being any better, because I don't use either. I use only tubs.

I am thinking about switching to tubs but i want a set up for two tubs on on top of the other in a rack made for two. Whats better for the tubs the belly heat or the back heat? And what should I lay down in the tubs? Newspaper? etc.

Yea I hate those bulbs in my tank too but he seems to be smart around them yesterday I got freaked out when I saw him go near it and I watched him he bumped his head into it lol and took of hell of quick. So I think he is somewhat smart but I still want to get rid of that tank and get me the two tubs so that when I get my girl or my new male which are going to be about 2 feet in lenght or more. What size tub would I be looking at that will last me forever and I dont need to keep on upgrading tubs?

These are Sterilite 1986 models (41 quart) that I got at Walmart. Get a solder wand while you are there for about $10 for putting in ventilation holes.

I use belly heat and each tub has a 1 foot section of 11" flexwatt and all three are controlled with one Ranco thermostat. You can get all of that equipment at http://www.reptilebasics.com

I use newspaper and the hides are plastic bowls with entrances soldered out to make hides:

Same tub for an adult (all my aspen has been replaced now with newspaper):

    Re: Whats better setup?
In regards to your original question...any porous material has the potential to house more bacteria. So yes wood could hold more then say plastic which holds more then glass.

However...if you seal the wood then you won't be able to tell a difference. Also, if you practice good husbandry (ie. cleaning often, not letting waste sit, etc.) you shouldn't have any issues.

This is similar to the debate on if plastic cutting boards are so much better then wood ones...the jury is still out and there is no scientific proof (when taken care of) that one houses more than another.

The real question in not what to make it out of but what you want to do with it, and where you want to keep them.

Kibplover, Hey what are you using to control your temperatures so steady? I always have to wake up middle of the night to see if his temps dropped or rose in the tank.

Robin, Where do you place the flex watt tape more to the hide or away from the hide?
Is it more towards the hot side? I am about to purchase 2 accurite's but I am still in debate on the flexwatt or the heat pad and was going to purchase the ZooMed rept temp 500r Thermometer those any good? I am just really sick of worrying about the temperature :) I cant get out the house without worrying about that :(

The flexwatt is on the back half of the tub on the bottom, completely covering the warm side of the enclosure.

Be sure to invest in a quality thermostat like Ranco or Johnson's to control it.

    Re: Whats better setup?
could those tubs also be found at places like walmart or are they special snake ones? cause i was thinking of using a tub like that from walmart (the ones that the bottom isnt totaly flat) but putting like a piece of plywood on the bottom, and hooking a heat pad to one side of the plywood for the ground heat??? and do you control humidity same way as any other viv?

    Re: Whats better setup?
well i wasnt to sure about the ground not being flat, and also putting the heating pad on the bottom of the plastic, and the flexxwatt tape everyone uses with the tubs isnt expencive but the thermostats to use for them are alittle much, lookin for alittle cheaper then $120, and the heat pads seem to be a bit less and easier to use

any head pad, either a zoomed or flexwat, needs a thermostat or at very least a dimmer...
