humid hide
hi all...
my ball, Batista, has shed 4 times for me. the first one was really bad, but the three following were perfect. i put a humid hide in his cage during shed time which is why he has had 3 perfect sheds. he is in the blue again now...i put in the humid hide, and guided him in there, but he didn't stay...i guess i am worried that he will have another crappy shed. any ideas why he is choosing not to use it this time? my temps are 93 hot side, 83 cool side, humitity at 45% thruout, humid hide humidity is at 80%. do i just let nature take it's course? if they need the extra humidity, he will use it, right?
thanks!
Tammy

Re: humid hide
I'm assuming you have two hides. Take the other out. When your snake moves into the humid hide, put the other hide back in. Just a thought.

Re: humid hide
Why don't you just up the overall humidity by spraying or putting damp moss in. Try to raise it to around 60%.

Re: humid hide
i do mist daily, but i also work 10 hours a day and can't be there to babysit the humidity level in his tank. yep, i do have 2 hides...and normally he uses both of them. do you think putting a couple of damp sponges on top of his hides will do the trick? i really don't want to remove either hide, as that is how he gets his temp gradient.

Re: humid hide
Well then maybe you can get a humidifier. Or just mist heavily while he's shedding. But he needs it.

Re: humid hide
as i said in a previous post, his past 3 sheds have been perfect...a snake will use a humid hide if they find it necessary, right?

Re: humid hide
I think it would be totally fine to put a couple of damp sponges on top of his other hides to help boost humidity throughout the day. Leave the humid hide in there as well so he can use it if he chooses.
Just be sure to swap out for clean sponges every few days or so. (Or sooner if they get fouled, obviously...or if they start to smell musty.)

Re: humid hide
thank you...i just wonder why he is choosing not to use his humid hide this time around...kinda weird.

Re: humid hide
Tammy, if you are keeping in an aquarium. after you mist, just put some plastic on top to cover it up until he sheds.then remove after he completes his shed. :sweeet:

Re: humid hide
i had a humid hide in my guys tank while he was shedding and he never used it. then this morning i woke up and i looked into his regular hide, and he left me a present... a perfect shed and some nice snake droppings. funny thing is he was in the humid hide. not using it all the time he shedbut after he was in it. i have a weird snake.

Re: humid hide
Hi there,
Royal pythons do not need as much humidity as most people here think :) . They will do just fine in 30-40% humidity

No, it should be about 70% for the week they shed. Prolonged periods of low humidty aren't good.

I think you should probably forgo giving out your "words of wisdom", as this is the second thread I've read in a few minutes where you give out wrong information. The other thread is: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...776#post548776
Generally speaking, joining the forum and immediately spewing forth incorrect husbandry information is looked down upon...maybe do a little research before you attempt to give any more advice.
