So so SOOO happy!!!
As you all know I work with the baby ball pythons at Pete's. We have a show this weekend up in White Plains, New York. Today he figured out who all he is selling. Let me tell you when I was told all the 06 male Het Pied's were going... I got worried.
I work with a few "reject" baby snakes. These are the babies that would have not made it if they were out in the wild. I love the little rejects & smidges, more then I love the other babies. These guys stand out, need more TLC and it is touch and go with them at times. Man do they pull on my heart strings!!!
We have one who I call "Loopy". He hatched out with a neurological problem and his head "loops" around. He doesn't have much control when it comes to balance and movement. He is one of the 06 Het Pied's. Pete can't sell him since he has those issues.
So he asked if I wanted him. OMG YES!
I'm so so happy he is letting me have him! I guess Chris told him that I know how to care for him and that I finally got him eating on his own. Also he sheds, drinks, poops & pees just fine.
I was so so so scared that he was just going to let him go to just anyone at the show or was going to put him down seeing that he does have issues and maybe not knowing that I had gotten him jump started at life again. I wasn't going to even ask him if I could have him since that would have just been wrong and very rude of me since he's not mine and I only work there.
All I kept thinking was "whoever gets him better understand his issues and needs... he's not normal but he doesn't need to be put in a freezer if he starts to have trouble!!!"
Man I was so happy I got all teary eyed! Yes that is how much those little rejects mean to me!
I can't even say how worried I was when I heard all the 06 Het Pied's were going... First thought was "OH GOD, Loopy!". I feel like a lot of weight has been lifted off of my sholders!

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Your story made me smile :) I'm so glad someone that cares so much will be taking care of loopy. Sometimes the "special" ones really touch your heart.

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
awesome! :carrot:
the odd ones get me too...I have hatched a ton of fish over the years and always kept the ones with 'issues' as pets. They always ended up being my favorites :)
(of course I always put down any animal that seemed to be suffering, but that is not the case you are describing)
I'd love to see video of him being Loopy sometime in the future....curious what that looks like.
enjoy your new special baby, and thanks for caring for those 'special' ones :D

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Way to go Allison! Do you have pics of the little guy yet?

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Why wouldnt u just buy him if he meant that much to you.

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Not all of us have the money to buy something if it strikes our fancy.
Congrats on your new baby Allison!! My Hepburn also does 'loopys' but hers is definitely bc she is a spinning spider. Maybe Loopy is a spinning het pied? At any rate I bet he is the sweetest ever! Give him an extra pat or two from me!
Good for you to give that extra time to the ones that need it. Some people believe the ones that don't eat on their own and all are just as well to just die, but I think some of them just need a hand up occasionally, just like all of us! Once given a good start, they do wonderfully! Yay for you!

Sure is. "Spinning" isn't exclusive to spiders.

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
What a happy ending :) And a beginning really; he is definately a special-needs snake, but really I am sure that there is no person more qualified on earth than you, since you knew him already.. awesome!

Aww, that is the cutest story ever. And WOMAN, where are the pics!!!
Congrats :)

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Thanks everyone!
Yes, Loopy is what is known as a "spinner" and a has a bad case of the spinnies at that. Spiders are known for their "spinning", but as Adam said... Spiders aren't the only ones who "spin".
As for buying him goes... I would have jumped at that but I'm paying off a 900+ vet bill + getting my cat fixed and vaccinated this week + all my normal bills like car payment, car insurance, etc. So money is tight right now. Sadly I don't have $250 to just shell out to save him.
I look at this way. I know Pete, Chis, and myself try and do our best with bringing all the babies who have issues around. In some cases they shoot off and live normal snake lives. In others they have issues that can't be corrected (like Loopy) who are always going to be different and may have reoccurring troubles through out their whole life. Then you have the ones who just don't make it no matter what you do or how hard you fight to keep them alive. I can't personally save every BP who has issues, even though I'd love to!
I absolutely LOVE this job, but it is very tough when situations come up like this. I know I've lost it and cried over more then one snake there and was on the verge of doing that over Loopy. I'm very happy and so glad that Pete has given me chance to have him, to give him the attention he needs and may need for how ever long.
As for pictures, I don't have any of him since he is still up at the shop. Hopefully I'll have him here by Friday and if not some time next week. Picture's of him will be the death of your computers because there will be A LOT of them. ;)

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
It's going to be hard sometimes honey. No living creature that we humans breed is always going to produce healthy, viable young and it comes down to the caring, knowledge breeders and their staff to make some tough calls. I know it can't be easy though. It sounds like Loopy is one that is surviving and personally I figure as long as they have a good quality of life, are not in pain, then they deserve a chance every time. Good for you Allison, and good for Loopy! He could not find a better or more loving human to share his snakey life with. :)

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Thanks Joanna & everyone else for the kind words!!!
I'll be bringing him home on Friday. I can't wait!

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Good for you and for little Loopy!!! I'm so very happy for you, and I know how you feel. My cornsnake has a bump in his spine, and I took him because my choice was between him and a normal snake. My instincts told me that if I didn't take him, the breeder would put him down. I'm so glad I did!!! He is a wonderful little snake and the older he gets the less noticeable his lump gets as well.
Toby the lumpy cornsnake and I wish you and Loopy all the best, we will be cheering for you!!!!!!!!

Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Man it feels like Friday is a month away. A day away is NOT close enough!
-
Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
That's just awesome Allison! Kudos to you for giving him a second shot at life :)
And after thinking about it for a bit, a big kudos to Pete as well! I know far too many breeders that would have had that snake in the freezer a long time ago :(
-
Re: So so SOOO happy!!!
Yes I agree with the freezer thing. I know a lot of people would just look at the ones who are born very tiny, not good eaters, have other issues or non life threating deformities, etc and just put them in the freezer. All because they don't want to deal or put that time or money into them. Which is sad but I can kind of understand. Either way this guy is a total keeper. He's not going anywhere!
Is it Friday yet?
