Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Very cool! I had an uncle who collected glass coke bottles from across the US back in the 60s-70s.
So where do you find antique bottles? Ebay?
Anyway, nice collection! :sweeet:

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
A while back there was some big work done to one of the local parks. They were actually improving the jogging, walkig path that was going under some of the main streets.
Anyway they had very good sized holes in the ground a few long trenches probably 5 feet deep.
Went with some bottle collectors who were telling me that many times parks are just covered up garbage dumps and sure enough, in the dirt there were pieces of glass everywhere and there were just tons of intact bottles.
Was actually a really fun experience even though we had to keep it on the hush hush.

You can find them on Ebay, ive never bought from there though. I find most of mine in old dumps and old outhouses:P. Im digging at my grandparents right now, their house is from the late 30's and there is an old dump where to original homeowner would dispose of their stuff. Crazy thing is the original owner was a school teacher, theres LOTS of old whisky bottles down there:rolleyes:.

Yeah too bad you dont have them now, old flasks usually sell pretty good. In the second to last pic is a flask my mom found in the basement of our old house, Coffin Flask from around 1880-1910.

Thanks, the first set of blue ones (3) are old Milk Of Magnesia bottles.
The second blue one is a McKesson and Robbins poison bottle.

Is the Ball Mason jar a 13?

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Are there any particularly rare Mason jars? I know of a basement that is loaded with them.. unfortunately, they are all full of food that was there since the 1980s.. some of it even looks good! (not that I would eat it..)
I have a few bottles I found out back in the woods right at home here. If I had my camera, I'd take a few shots.. might take a couple days.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
I have one jar marked "Atlas E-Z Seal". Apparently it is quite valuable according to ebay!

The story goes that back in the day moonshiners would break all the #13 jars because they were thought to be bad luck...So that means today there are very few of the #13 jars compared to other #'s
I have one and my Dad has a few #13's

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Very cool little bottle, you can tell it has some age on it from all the bubbles in the glass.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Gorgeous collection! I have a very small collection of bottles packed carefully in my parents basement back in IN. I too would love to see photos from other people's collections!
-
Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
I will get pics of the G13.. that is such a cool background story about the moonshine! This place was definately a still back in the day.. this jar I found was part of a bunch I found with food still in them.. how would you recommend cleaning them out? They have ancient green beans/corn/etc. and I am not looking forward to smelling what might come out, but though it is some years old, it honestly looks edible!

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
I would take a deep breath and dump the contents in the trash, then put the jar into a bucket with warm water and either dish soap or powder laundry detergent and let it soak for 24 hours. Ive never cleaned out old food but I have cleaned out 60 year old cough syrup and ink, and let me tell you that stuff STINKS.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
For anyone interested, Ive got an Antique Bottle Forum in the getting started stages.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
I tried getting a shot of the G13 on the bottom, but the glare was too much; I can try again later. Here's the jar itself...

Hmmm. Our neighbors have an old burning pit from their trash. The couple is in their 80-90's. Think that may be a decent place to look?

I would dig around; never know what you'll find.
Old farm junkpiles in the woods are awesome too; that's where I found this Ball.

Yep that would be a great place, if you find shards of glass, it usually means there will be whole bottles somewhere.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
My dad used to collect old bottles. He found some nice ones when we ripped up our old front porch. The house was build in the 1920's. I have a collector's bottle of Jim Beam from 1969. It's a ceramic? bottle for the 200th anniversary, 1769-1969, and it has full color printing on the front and back. It's never been opened and it still has the paper seal on the cap. I'll try to take some pictures.

From the way BALL is spelled it looks like the jar is from 1933-60, but ive never seen a lid like that, very unique. Does the lid say anything on top?

It says "do not freeze" "refrigerate after opening" around the rim on the lid sides. Nothing but a 79 cent price stamp in purple on top.. weird, like someone canned and then sold something in it.. unless the jar was that much?

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Here is what I found today, as well as a closeup of the g13 on the Mason jar I posted before :) Anything interesting; one of them looks like a salt shaker! The other one says Acme on front with a shield motif.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
The Acme jar looks very unique, it would be a keeper in my book. The little salt/pepper shaker is pretty neat aswell, you could try soaking the bottle lid down in some vegetable oil to get the lid nice and clean. Dont really know how that works but my grandmother has a old salt shaker soaking in oil and its coming out pretty well.
Generally the screw top stuff isnt worth much, althought there are some worth BIG BUCKS. You can look at the seems on the side from where it was made and if the seem stops before it reaches the lip then it should be from around 1900 or older. Keep looking and if you find somewhere to dig, be SURE to wear THICK leather gloves, I havnt been able to dig for a while cause I was reaching for a broken jar to get it out of the way and it sliced right through my glove and pretty deep into my finger, not very fun:rolleyes:.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Whoa, that sounds painful :(
I found a lot of busted jars (and a really cool skull; think it is from a coyote?) also. I plan on going back there tomorrow with Mark, b/c he was intrigued when he saw what I found..
I actually have used one of the Atlas jars as a betta container.. got the idea from a friend. And it is about twice the size of the bowls most people use :)
Two of the bottles I have, the seams stop short of the tops. I read on that site you linked to, that this Does mean they are older.. now I want to just go out and find more :) Addicting.. even if they are worthless, they make cool decor pieces and fit right in with our country kitchen. My friend's sister paints scenes on them and sells them (mason jars.) I think I will try my hand at that also.

Sometimes ppl would use old mayo lids and stuff for home canning. Looks like some of the ones my grandmother would use. Can w/the canning lid, and then put a mayo lid on top...OR sometimes she'd do the wax canning to seal the jar and put the lid on.
It doesn't look like it came w/the jar...but was added by someone when they were doing their own home canning.
:2cent:
Beautiful!! cobalt blue bottle(s), BTW...I think that's the prettiest shade of blue!

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
off, off-topic.....Gin, did U know that keeping Bettas in the 'plish' or a little bowl or jar isn't healthy for them?
I didn't until mine got sick and I did a whooooole bunch of searching and research......
In the tabletop bowls and such, the water is unhealthy (no matter how many times you do a water change.......wrong pH and not enough O2) and they don't stay warm enough.
Just an FYI. :)
< If I get another one, he'll go into a biiiiiiiig aquarium. :D >
(All done. :) )

Ebay is a good place to look at prices on bottles, there are also a few websites to find out the prices. The best place to look are bottle books/price guides. Ill send you a PM with a bottle website that may help ya out.

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
Thanks. I found a 1920 patd Orange Crush Bottle, a bottle that has a glass cork for it, and a few Glass flasks that say "1/2 pint" and "Federal Law Forbids the Sale or Re-Use of this bottle"

Re: My Other Hobby. *DUW*
I found an old Yale B-D LOK-SYRINGE by Becton ****inson & Co. that is solid glass. No cracks or chips, just no needle on it. I should be able to get pics in a couple more weeks.
