It was covered here a few months back but I forgot what kind of snake we decided it was.

I am not expert at giants, but does scrub python sound good? I THINK I remember hearing that's what it was. I don't know anything about scrubs so for all I know it could be a small snake and I am completely wrong.

    I believe it's a Papuan pulling up a Wallabee.

It looks like it is some Morelli species. It's haard to determine the size from the pic (that could be a big kangaroo or a small wallabey, but it appears to be a Macklots, Savu, water python or similar.

The pic's fine, we just don't have anything in the picture that shows comparative size.

This thread and pic came up before. It turned out to be an Olive Python eating a rock wallaby. Here's a closer pic.

I'd imagine that the wallaby had drowned, after which it was found. Interesting photo.

It is either a scrub python, or an Olive python.

ANd that is a kangaroo or a wallabee! Deffanatly no cow.

Probably a rock wallabee, or a wallaroo not a kangaroo. The olive was probably sitting on the ledge and the and the rock wallabee came bounding by and got grabbed. The struggle probably dropped partially into the water and now the snake had to pull the prey back up to feed. But thats just the way i see it.

Can that thing actually eat the wallaby/kangaroo/creature?! It's HUGE! I dont see how the snake could move after a meal like that. But then, I'm no expert in large snakes.

That pic was taken in Wester Australia, it's an Olive Python, one of the larger varieties (there are 3 depending on area), and it's disputed whether that's a small kangaroo or a fully grown wallaby that it's pulling out of the water. My father in law has an Olive, they're gorgeous snakes, if you google images for Olive Pythons you'll see the same one, this leads to the story behind it.

It's definately not a kangaroo. That is a beautiful snake though, wow. Now I think I found my next species of snake I am going to get sooner or later.

it is an olive for sure... I can only guess that it is a wallaby - but the snake, for sure is an olive - Liasis olivaceus - and a big one at that.

For the poster above that asked if the olive can actually eat prey that size, yes - yes it can.

ABC also noted that someone posting as the original photographer left a message in their guestbook:
I hope you enjoyed the photo that we took recently while hiking in a gorge in northern Western Australia. The phython was not able to lift the wallaby after trying for approximately one hour. We left him catching his breath on a rock ledge above the pool.
Who knows what really happened though. . .

G'day guys, firstly hello from Australia, thanks for a great site, this pic has been doing the rounds in the herp comunity for some time now, the snake species and indeed the prey are a hotly debated topic, i think you will find that it is a species known as the Pilbara python, (Liasis olivaceus barroni) its a type of olive python that grows really large, obviously. The prey i cant be exact on but it is most certainly a type of kangaroo.

    thanks guys
