Spinner?? I'm worried....
Ok, so I konw I have a million and a half post about Lilly getting out and my mom finding her last night, but even though my mom found her, now I'm worried. I can't be there to see what is going on, so all of this is what my mom (who knows nothing about snakes execpt what I have told her) has told me over the phone.
Lilly was found after 3 weeks of being out. She's in Arkansas, so the temps. there have been kinda crazy. My mom tried to feed her as soon as she found her and she wouldn't eat. I told her to wait until Saturday to do anything else(handleing and whatnot) with her b/c she was probablly stressed out. I don't know what temps my mom has her at, but I told her to aim for upper 80's lower 90's (the problem with her being at home is she isn't in a proper set up =/ )
So when my mom went to check on Lilly last night she said she didn't move at all, even when my mom touched her. So my mom got her out (I my mom was scared she had died) and was going to give her some water. So she put Lilly on a towel on the bathroom counter and put a small bowl of water next to her. Apperently Lilly flicked her toung at it and in it a bit but didn't drink, but then my mom tells me that she started waving her head back and forth and spinning it around "like she was chasing a ball". I wasn't real clear on if Lilly herslef was going in circles, or if she was just spinning her head, but either was it's not normal.
She's not a spinder and I don't think she is a "spinner" but that is the first thing I thought of when my mom described it to me. Is it maybe that she has an RI and is reacting funny? Or is it something they do when they get dehydrated? (I have told my mom that she may need to soak her for a bit since the house isn't that humid) From what she said, Lilly just quit doing it after a min. or so and started crawling around, so my mom put her back in her hade and she just went in and curled up like normal.
Sorry about the length of the post, I just didn't want to miss anything. Has anyone ever delt with a snake doing that before, or konw what I need to do to help Lilly? :hmm: Thanks!
:edit: Ah! I forgot to say I think I'm going to tell my mom to take her to the vet reguardless. I'm just wanting to know if anyone else has delt with this or knows what or why she's doing it. Thanks again! :edit:

She wouldn't have to be a spider to be a spinner I've heard of normals that spin. And that sounds like she was spinning it tend to happen more when they are really stressed or excited. However get her to a vet and get her checked for RI today if you can.

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
Ah, thanks! I had heard that normals can spin, but I've never seen her do anything like this, but I'm guessing she is really stressed.
Also, what can I do about dehydration? I don't konw how long it's been since she has had water (we had a water bowl out that she could use but I don't know that she ever found it) I suggested that my mom soak her....??

Just keep here calm and keep fresh water in the tank with her. She'll find it.

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
That's the problem...she's not in a tank at the moment. I took her home for a week when I went and couldn't take the whole cage. I know the set-up she's in right now isn't something we can keep her in for very long....My mom bought a tub, but I don't know how to set it up. I have her whole tank and whatnot here with me (my mom has the heat lamp so she can provide some heat for Lilly) and I know my mom can't afford to buy all that stuff a scond time. I can't seem to find any posts about a temp. housing possibility...

Understand that changing her enclosure like this is adding to the stress.

If your animal was in a proper/secure setup at home with heat on a thermostat, and fresh water she would have been fine for a couple of days with out you. Given that all of the above is true

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
I understand that but right now she is in the bag I moved her in, filled with balled up newspaper and her hide in it. She doesn't seem to mind going in there and likes her hide, but I know it's not good for her to be in there. My mom just has the heat lamp turmed on the bag with a thermometer so she knows how hot it is. It wasn't possible for me to bring her tank when I took her home for that one week, and I had not choice b/c her temps in her tank were too crazy with out misting every day. Right after she had gotten out if we had found her I would have been able to go get her so she would be in her tank again, and I'm going home on the 5th so she will have it then, but this is a really crazy time and I can't make the 5 hour drive one way to go get her.
There is a sort of temp gradient in the bag, since it doesn't hold heat very well. So right under the light it's nice and warm and it's cooler in the rest of the bag. I hate to have her in that, but as cool as my mom is, she isn't gonig to go buy all of the supplys to set up a tub (uth, dimmer, etc) when I already have all of that stuff. I was just wondering what would be the best way to keep her temperaroly until I can get home?

Today is the 13th ?? Do you mean the 5th of May??

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
I understand that it was my fault that she got out, and that it was dumb to take her home with out the proper stuff. And no, she wouldn't have been fine if I left her here the first time. I hadn't gotten my temps to stay level yet without misting, so if I didn't mist her tank a few times a day the humidity was next to nothing and her temps were way too high. It was fine with me misting, and I was in the process of getting a thermostat to fix all of that, but I hadn't gotten one yet and this is what I had to do.
I completely understand that it was my fault, and hearing it from other people doesn't make me feel any better about it. But it's over with and I'm trying to get my girl back with me and healthy again. So, is there any type of temporary enclosure I can tell my mom to get?

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
and yes I mean the 5th of May....that is why I need something more dependable until I can get home. :(

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
Thank you...and sorry for jumping to the definsive so quick. I feel really guilty about her getting out and now possibly being sick. It wasn't so much aimed at you really, it was just the two posts right after eachother. I really do appriciate your help ^_^
Can you use a normal UTH on a tub or will it melt the tub?
:edit: found it....you can use a regular UTH on a tub....right???

Yea a normal uth from zoomed or trex will work fine just be sure it is on a dimmer or rheostat to control the heat. Newspaper for substrate, the cheap little plastic hides and a new dog bowl for water, thermostat and your set. Tell mom to get her to the vet have her checked for URI.

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
Good luck with everything. The spinning could possibally be nurological damage cause by toxins she could have been exposed to when she was loose. If that's the case it might be reversable, or it might not be. I've heard that an overdose of Flagyl can cause this, as can exposure to several other chemicals. I'd suggect giving her a bath to wash off any residue or chemicals that might be on her skin, and making her drink some water and soaking her to try to get her to pass anything she may have ingested. I don't know, but maybe even a spider bite or something. Keep the heat high, maybe offer some water with pedialite. Can anybody add to these theories?

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
i took one of those cheap tupperware containers, like 5x9x2, cut a hole in the lid and filled it with half the size of my guy with water. its pretty much a water filled hide, but will help them do feel safe and start drinking again. at least it worked for my guy

Just a couple of thoughts....
thought #1 - Could you meet your mom half way in order to get the snake "home"?
thought #2 - You could ship your uth, dimmer, etc to your mom, so that she could set your snake up in the tub.

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
So I talked to my mom and she's going to set up an appointment with the vet for early next week. The closest herp vet is about an hour away and she doesn't get off work until 5, but we found one that was open till 7 *whew* And she is also going to get a tub set up. Lilly's hides are at the house, and my mom has a tub apperenly (I don't know why she didn't tell me before! :P ) so all she really has to buy is the UTH. I asked her to stop and get one when she got off work today and I'm going to remind her so she won't forget ^_^
I would like to meet my mom half way, but I wouldn't be able to take Lilly to the vet. I have finals soon and I really can't miss any classes right now (my studio is every day until 5:30..) We originally planned to do that, but I think she probably really should see a vet, and she will see one faster with my mom right now. And if she gets that tub set up tonight, it should be ok for her to stay there for a bit.
Steve- I thought that once a UTH was attached to something, you couldn't take it off with out ruining it?? I have mine attached to the bottom of her glass tank, so I didn't want to try and take it off.
I asked my mom to either soak her for a short time or rub her down, incase there is anything on her skin. Do you think that she would eat something if it wasn't warm like it was alive? And I've heard of Flagyl before, but what is that?
Thanks again for all the help, I really wish I could have her here and not have to deal with classes, but if my mom can do all that she said she would, Lilly should be getting better treatment here soon ^_^

You can depending on the type but yes you run the risk of messing it up?

Re: Spinner?? I'm worried....
I'm not going to, that's why I asked my mom to buy one since they aren't too expensive. I was just wondering for future use.

Ah. Well, I have never used the self adhesive "option" with a heat pad. I either just set the enclosure on top of it, or if need be, tape it to the enclosure. The reason for this is exactly what you mentioned! ;)

I never even thought about that.....haha. Well, I guess now I know ^_^
