It's a URI ... If I were you, I'd warm him up and get him to a vet for a culture and a course of anit-biotics.

How many different kinds of antibiotics are there? I have some antibiotic injections left over from Gabe, which unfortuantely I never got to use... If we can figure out if they would be the right thing to use, I could send them to you.

From what I have read on this forum (no experience with this myself), yes, you have to have antibiotics, and yes it is fatal if not treated. Hope you get him in to the vet soon!
Mine is only $37 plus meds, so really not so bad.

My 1 year old BP had RI and we gave him Baytril. We gave him .5 cc for 10 days. He got better quick.

We kept him real warm and put a small water bowl on the warm end of the cage to help with humidity.

    Re: popping,clicking?
It's an injection, as I understand it, thatyou give to them in the middle of the back. As I said I never got the chance to give it to my snake, but I'm sure someone on here could give you advice on how to administer it.

You will want to get him to a vet. The vet will check him out, get his weight and probably do a culture. By doing that he will be able to figure out what antibiotic is best to use and how much by his weight he will need to fight the RI. RI's will no go away on their own, but for the time being you can let him soak in a tub of warm water for about 30 minutes. This will help loosen up the mucus that is in his lungs. Also bump your hot side to 95. Also the med's are given by an injection. Your vet will be able to show you just how to do this. It's not hard to do so once his/she shows you the correct way to administer it without hurting him. GOOD LUCK & keep us posted on how he does!

I gave the injection behind the vent. Go in at a slant, not straight in. You can buy this med at your local vet, it's very inexpensive.

Edit to add- today I bought 7 injections for $17.50. They were a larger dose than I said above.

Keep in mind that most antibiotics don't last long...they expire quickly. I have no specific knowledge on Baytril but you might look and see when it expires before you attempt what it sounds like you thinking about.

Also...I see big concerns here. While I can understand your financial problems I am not sure blindly giving your animal meds is the best course here. (via a shot that you have never done or been shown how to do) Adam didn't say it WAS a URI he said is sounds like it is, so we are guessing based on 1 symptom.

I strongly recommend you try the vet approach first. (any vet can do the culture to verify what it is even if they don't normally treat snakes)

    My package says

"Baytril injection .8 mg (doesn't give the exp date), Give 1 injection one daily for 10 days, back 1/2 of body near spine in muscle"

Anyway it was given to me on 3/13.

Dont use someone else's meds, your snake may need something stronger/weaker take it to a vet, its not expensive, think about how much you payed for the animal plus all the equipment/feedings..

This thread makes me uncomfortable. Lots of incorrect info and dangerous advice. The important thing is that your snake is very sick and without treatment will likely die. You NEED to get it to a vet ASAP for the proper diagnosis and treatment. If you can afford a Cinnamon, then you should be able to afford a vet. Owning animals is about responsibility and preparedness. Good luck.

Yeah maybe this isn't the best idea... You don't have any free credit you can use for a vet visit?

    Re: popping,clicking?
    Also I must chime in!!!

Amy, that was very nice of you but those Baytril injections expire pretty quick. Also what worked for your snake may not work for his. Also your snake may be or may not be of a heavier weight that his snake is so those injections may be to much med or not enough med and in the end could wind up making his snake worse off then he is in the long run.

I do NOT recommend just taking them and using them. You aren't sure how to give an injection, and that could lead to some problems. I'm NO vet by any means but I do HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you taking him in to a qualified vet and get him checked out. If you are tight on money, call and ask them how much a vet visit is and ask them if they have a payment plan. Also you may want to think in to getting a credit card and hiding it away just for emergencies like this. I know my hidden pet CC card has come in handy when I'm broke and my pet needs to go to the vet.

Call your local vet and tell him whats going on. He may have some idea about snakes even tho he is not a herp vet. My non herp vet is awesome!!!

He told me today that Baytril is a very safe and good antibiotic. My herp vet called me and he said the same thing about baytril.

Like I said I have big concerns and it seems so do others...take him to the vet. It is not worth his life.

    That was unnecessarily rude...

You are asking for help, and people are trying to tell you !!!

It is up to you to listen, and take it with a grain of salt.

Do what you have to do, as you now have a concerned community of people rooting you on!

    Good luck.

    Re: popping,clicking?
URI is nothing to play with, but if your snake is in shed, it could be partially due to that as well. my gtps always seem a bit "labored" in the breathing area when they are going into a shed. no fluids from mouth but wheezing and a bit of mouthbreating isnt uncommon. remember, these guys shed all their skin including nostrils, so it is probably a bit tough to breath with all that skin loosening up. i would probably err on the safe side and get to a vet, but bear in mind it could be due to the oncoming shed. i guess you have to objectively determine how bad the symptoms are. tough to do as it is your pet, and again best to be safe than sorry. but i have seen it a bunch of times in varying MINIMAL degrees due to sheds.
i hope thats all that your pet has.
    good luck
