Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
Hi Everyone...My wife and I have decided we want a "larger" then BP display snake. I know most species are shy but think having one that others can see would be fun. So colorful is important...as is cost (I spend most of my "extra" funds on new BP morphs) so I would like to keep it under $250.
I was leaning toward the Brazilian Rainbow Boas and found a great deal ($135) from Rainforest Reptiles (then I read the reviews on Fauna and decided against doing business with them).
So what would everyone suggest...either another dealer or a better option for a snake (and good dealer)
Thanks for the ideas.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
BRBs hide just as much as ball pythons do...so you are going to run into the same issues in creating a display setup.
Arboreal species like Green Tree Pythons and Emerald Tree Boas are more likely to stay out, but once they find a perch, don't move much after that. They look very nice. The flip side to that is many do not like to be handled...at all.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
BRB's will borrow and never come out till night. Same with Dumerils. Taiwan Beauties, and other slender snakes like them will be a good choice too.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
Carpet pythons all the way.

Wow...4 recommendations for carpets. I had looked at them too, but cost being somewhat of a factor - the nice bright black/yellow/green seemed way up there, while where I am looking they were dingy. So do you guys have a recommendation on a breeder for nice looking ones? I plan to check out the Midwest Reptile show this weekend but am not holding my breath (it has been slim pickins on snakes lately.
Thanks for the comments everyone.

Hey Brad...I guess "Display" was the wrong word...all my snakes are in racks...this snake will be in a somewhat realistic display so him hiding is still OK (not to mention no one is really home during the day so he can sleep all he wants :) ) I can always get him out if someone every is interested. We don't entertain much so it is more for my wife and I to "know he is there"
As for the GTP I thought about them but I have kids that like to "play" with the snakes and all I have read about them though awesome looking wouldn't work for what we are thinking.

MPENN on here is a breeder I BELIEVE..... python in a pear tree..... is his websight. EDIT: here it is! http://www.pythoninapeartree.com/
As for the BRB, if you have kiddos that are gonna want to hold said snake, Even though I raised mine from littles, they still strike if they feel the need.... kinda their nature. BUT they have never spun and struck. The last time was when my friend was getting pix of them.... just some useless info!?!? :P

GTP tend to be a totally hands off snake. Some for the others to consider would be a Mandarin rat snake is cool and so is a bamboo rat snake

Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
Sean, I was where yoou were and I too wanted to get into something besides the balls. So i went with boas. I acutally got a trio frmo Kara at Nerd. I think boas are great and there are a ton of morphs that you can create as well. I think you will find that kingsnake is not flood with them as the ball market is.
Also, if you would like your kids to handle them they do make dwarf boas(dwarf meanign 3-6 ft so they still get big.. just have to make sure the lines are washed with mainland boas.).. I went with some hog island.. they are a great dwarf ( if you get real lines) and they have great temperments.
I was thinking about the GTP as well, but a little to nippy for me.. But I am sure i will have some in my collection soon because they are very nice looking snakes.
Same thing with balls man.. research and research who you are getting yours from. It is no different on the Boa side. There is some shady things going on for sure.
just something for you to think about.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
I was going to say carpet aswell or a rtb.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
who says GTPs are nippy. and carpets can be just as nippy. you need to work with any animal to make it more "people friendly".
as babies green trees can be evil but my adults are great just dont put your hands in the enclosures at night...
carpets can be the same way it's a matter of how much work you are willing to put in. just like the work you put in with balls to make them less shy.
but i would say go with a carpet because they get bigger and move around a little more and tend to become less tempermental than GTPs.
my :2cent:
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
Thanks Everyone for all the feedback. After talking it over with my wife I think we will go with a Carpet (we both like the way they look). Working with them and taming them down isn't an issue, and as for the kids by playing they like me to get them out and let them crawl around so they can pet them (only occasionally do they want to hold them) so he again I think a Carpet will work out better.
I will check out pythoninapeartree...any other breeders to consider?
Also, what is a good target price for one? Male or Female (or does it matter - note no plans to breed it just for a pet)
Thanks again for all the help...I will post pictures once we get one.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
Will Bird has some amazing carpets. Good prices aswell.
Re: Recommendation Wanted - New Snake
Good choice. Females should get bigger than males(I think) so its up to you.
