"in" reads the temp at the unit

"out" reads the temp at the probe.

i put my probes on the warm side and the unit on the cool side. i use paper, so i put the probe right on the tub bottom. your snake can burrow, so it would be nice to know that the tub bottom isn't too hot or cold.

You shouldn't have to "set it" to "in or out"....but the display may show a clock as well as one of the temps...you can press one of the buttons on the front to toggle the display to show both temps.

The way I have mine set up: The unit itself is resting inside the tub in the front corner of the cool side so I can read it without opening the tub. That's the "indoor" temperature. The probe is tucked under the warm-side hide, which is where the snake spends most of her time when she's on the warm side, so those are the temps I want to monitor. That's the "outdoor" temp.

Hope that helps some. The humidity is also measured at the unit itself, and not from the probe.

i have an acurite in/out and humidity and a regular in/out. i put the probe under his warm side hide, under a little substrait but not touching glass, and the unit outside his hide, then i do the same with the other on the cool side, under his hide in substrait and outside his hide. this way i can know the temps in this hides where he spends most of his time, and the ambient temps.

I would put the probe in the middle of the cage next to the substrate. That would be a great place for it.

    Good luck.

The thermometer in the first picture is capable of reading two temperatures. Place the actual thermometer body on the cool end of the enclosure, then place the probe on the warm end, wherever your heat source is. Then the thermometer should give you both readings at the same time.

Just curious....why would you put the probe in the middle of the cage? :)

My original plan was to do it that way, but decided not to thinking my bp would just have a field day with throwing that thing around, and getting caught in the wire.

I keep the extra cable coiled up and tied together w/tiny tie wraps or twist ties from garbage bags, and tucked under the aspen or paper towels.

Hera, my adult RTB twisted around it once and tore it out of the unit, but I was able to solder it back together w/o any issues.

You want the IN (unit temp) to be the ambient and the OUT (probe) to be the hot. Less confusing that way....the probe was designed to be outside a window in the weather. :)

Precious likes to knock his over, but the others just leave it propped in the corner of the tank. On my tubs, I melted bigger holes close together, and using a tie strap, secured it to the side of the tub. They can't get to it there. OR you can get suction cups or heavy duty velcro strips and stick in on the glass/side of the tub.

Mine are velcroed to the side of the enclosure on the cool side at ground level - it's pretty darn secure, none of mine have ever been able to dislodge theirs.

As for the cord - I run it outside the enclosure and then back inside on the warm end (keeping all the excess still tied up with the twist tie). I've not had any get caught up in the wire.
