400 gram balls = what size hide?

okay, so i'm getting ready for my snakes to come... and they are approx 400 grams - so what dimensions of a hide will i need?

i don't weight my snakes so i really don't know what a 400 gram snake looks/feels like.

so anyone with that knowledge... please share :please: i picked up something that i thought would work, but now looking at it, i think it'll be way too small.

Are you looking for hides that "look nice" (eg. Exo terra sort of thing, fake rock looking) Or are you looking for something that might not look "nice" but the snakes absolutely love and is dirt cheap?

I'd say either a medium Creature Cubby Hole or an 8" plastic drip tray would work fine.

every snake in my house currently has exoterra hides... and these ones will too when they get bigger... but since they grow so fast i wanted something less expensive in the meantime.

so dirt cheap that the snakes will love works for me!!!

The round, plastic drip trays that you put under plant pots. You can find them stacked up in Home Depot or Walmart for about $1 each. Just cut a hole in the top or on the side and place them upside down. My snakes love them, but I switched to the Cubby Holes because the urates are a pain to clean from the rim.

no, but we do have other dollar stores... no dollaramas that i've ever seen in this neck of the woods.

Ok well, Im going to go snap some pics of a couple different setups using my dollar store stuff, and some other things to give you a better idea of what you want to do......what size tub are they going in?

they are going into their full tubs in our rack. IF they don't fare well i'll add newspaper but dexter, my other ball did fine in his large tub when he came home... so i'm going to give this a try.

dimensions - 6" high 16" wide 35" long

I like the hides that don't touch the floor anymore when they are in them. Perfect size!

I would say like Lawrence, Medium Creature Cubby Hole.

This is the size and the type of hide I use for BP that size.

Aleesha, i would also say a medium hide would work good. i posted(to give you an idea of size) a pic in my lemon thread i started when i got mine from evan, he was 497grams and was hanging out out it.

I use the small (6-8qt.?) sterilite shoe boxes with a 2" hole drilled into the lid and some moist sphagnum moss in the bottom for my BPs that size.

joe it was actually that pic of your lemon which made me realize i don't know what size these little ones will be and how can i can be ready for them if i don't know what size hide to get for them.

well glad that pic helped then...lol. now he spends all his time under the newspaper..

i use aspen, not newspaper for substrate... so i definitely need some hides for them :)

Aleesha I'd hit the dollar store for some nice dark plastic decent sized cereal bowls. I get them 2 or 3 for a dollar and both Robin and I use them for snakes about that size. You can just put an entrance either in the roof or in the side. I have nice dark blue ones, they clean up like a dream and are very cost effective for growing young snakes.

oooooooh... see i knew i'd find an inexpensive easy solution!!!! i'm thinking "thrift store"!!!! i can get plastic cereal bowls there cheaper than the dollar stores (up here everything is at LEAST a dollar per item)

He's about 400 grams...doesn't seem to mind that the hide is too small...I think they feel safe when they can really get under something, even if they aren't...
