Re: Hogg Island!
Hogg Island crosses. Has anyone done much with these boas. I think they are a great looking boa. The prices are pretty low on them.. why is that? I think they look great for natural genetics
any thoughts on other crosses with these guys?
thanks

Hate the idea. Crossing a pure locality intentionally is a horrible idea. If you love the species, keep the locality pure.
Hope theres others that agree :salute:

Re: Hogg Island!
Congratulations!
I am thinking seriously about getting one...
PLEASE post your experiences and observations as you get your boa settled in and used to handling. I will value your thoughts on behavior and husbandry as you go through the next few months. I hope to learn a lot!

Agreed to a point. Hypo "Colombians" are believed to be a cross of some sort of naturally hypo island local with a mainland "normal" but I agree for the most part. I see no need to mess with pure blood just to try and make a a quick buck

Re: Hogg Island!
Crosses rock, as long as they aren't mis-sold as pures, there is no wrong in them. The Sunsets (Hog x Col. super salmons) are one of the hottest looked for, most beautiful, and tamest snakes on the market for Boas right now. They are awesome. Hog's, in themselves, are absolutely beautiful snakes too, don't get me wrong. Crosses are a more designer morph though. They cost more, look better, and seem to retain all the best traits from each locale. There is beauty in everything, it's all upon the looker to judge.
If we want to get picky, there isn't a such thing as a "pure" anything with boas, they are all crossed and vary widely within wild caught specimens as well as within captive born specimens. Lines for most of these locales are nothing but a river or a mountain. True Hogs are pretty isolated within their island, but there has been some "hog's" found on that island, cannot remember the name right now, that don't look like a normal Hog Island at all, but more like a colombian. It's all mucked up within those boundaries of nature. Just look at the sudden merging of Guyana and Suriname Red Tails. No one could figure out what makes a Guyana a Guyana or a Suriname a Suriname, so it was decided by most scientists and environmental researchers that it was too close to decipher, thus the end result...the same thing.
Ok, my rant is done...Thanks for listening :)

Sorry Jake, I don't agree. Don't you own a Suri/Colombian cross?

Re: Hogg Island!
Jimmi, I have to agree with you. I think if you are honest about your lines you are crossing no harm. Look at the sunsets ..WOW very hot boa.. i was just wonderng what has been done with them. THe ones I am getting are very pure and would hate to ruin their traits.
I will never breed the girls with nothing but pure hog male. but the male I will breed to a hypo for sure.
What i found is that a lot of the hogs out there listed as "pure" really are not just that. The owners cant even trace the lineage back farther than the parents. Pretty said since most claim they want Locality pure offspring. Fact is a lot are not getting that.
thanks for the ideas and thoughts I appreciate it.

Re: Hogg Island!
I dont mind crosses within reason and sold honestly as such. I think the main reason I am reluctant about cross breeding is that now days you cannot be 100% posative you are getting a pure locality.
It does happen in nature alot though. Look at carpet pythons, they mix all over the place. Coastals, jungles, diamonds, ect.
I wonder if there is any DNA testing you could do on a snake to find out if it is "pure"...

Re: Hogg Island!
the fact of false advertising and boas you have no idea what they really are is the real reason I dislike crosses, honestly I think that some of the hypo hogs are really good looking, but honestly, I'd rather have a pure hog any day. Another thing i hate about it is that in making the hypo hogs you have a whole bunch of normal crosses, that are usually ugly and again, may be sold as pure. Anyway, thats my brief tirade

Re: Hogg Island!
Nice points and I'm sorry if this went off topic, I'll post a thread directly related to this topic in a second. I'm sure more people have their opinions. Also, there is good breeders out there who can prove their bloodlines and THAT is just another reason to only buy from reputable breeders.
EDIT:
Here is the new link:

Yes I do but i didn't cross a locality with no new pure blood coming into the US for breeding. Once all the pure hoggs are gone, we have almost no chance of EVER getting them back. The possibilty of suri boas going extinct isn't nearly as serious as Hogg islands boas
