Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
I candled my eggs and found out that only 3 are showing the veins, all others are clear (some already started getting mouldy - see other post), is this a normal percentage?
17eggs = 2 clutches, just to make sure...

3 out of 17 is a horrible percentage for fertile eggs. How are you incubating them? What temps is your incubator set at? What are you using to control temps? How are you measuring temps and where? What is the humidity in the egg boxes and how are you measuring that?
Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Not normal at all from what I've seen first hand and have heard from others. Are these two first time mom's that had those clutches? I've heard that first timers some times throw duds, but not always.
A few questions we'll all need to know to help you further...
What kind of incubator are you using humidity, temps... and what are you controlling the temps with what are you using to read those temps and humidity?
Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Figured that,
problem is the eggs came like this - they didn't die during the incubation, so my two females produced infertile eggs.
Incubator runs at 31.5C (+/- .1C) at a humidity of 88-95%, herpstat ND and a digital humid-meter installed.

Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Sounds like something could be up with your females or the male you bred them to?
Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Was it by the same male? He might be producing bad sperm...
Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Ouch...did you candle them when they were first layed? Outside the setup questions already asked...how big were the parents? proven breeders?
I got a WC that layed 8 and only 3 were fertile but in her case I chaulked it up to the travel stress (not to mention she laid in the car while heading home).
Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Sorry to hear that. Better luck with those females next year.

Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Sorry to hear that.... I am also curious if it was the same male?

Why go into something you can't really prove? I will start with the obvious and easy stuff;)
Re: Only 3 out of 17 eggs fertile?
Because the obvious could be the male, was he cycled properly. were the breedings too late? theres alot of things that could have gone wrong and its good to think about it now while everything is fresh in the mind so there is no reoccurence of the same next season. :)

What does an incubator have to due with whether or not eggs are fertile? Eggs are either fertile or they are not. Incubation, temps, humidity... have nothing to do with it. Good eggs can go bad because of poor incubation, but bad eggs can't turn into good ones.

put good eggs into a incubator with wrong temps and humidity and see where they go

Hmm... this has made me wonder how a viable egg might appear under inadequate incubation?
If the egg "dies", do the veins disappear?

I really think you are missing the point here. When eggs are layed they are either fertile or not. Infertile eggs will not hatch no matter how good your incubator is. Of course poor incubation temps can kill good eggs(as I said in my first post) but the eggs were still fertile.
