Tub ventilation

I live in FL, how many holes should i drill in my 32qt tubs and where?
Pictures would be sweet.

I bought a junk soldering iron to use to burn the holes. Drills make a mess and sometimes crack the plastic. Burning holees in plastic should only be done outside in a well ventilated area.

As for the number of holes, you should just get a humidity meter and test until you get the right number. This can be very frustrating. I am going through this right now.

I have put so many holes in a tub that I start to question the structural integrity and I can't get below 54% humidity in my basement. Even with a de-humidifier running at 35% less than 2 feet away. Maybe someone can help us both out.

54% is okay. have you tried running a fan in the room?

be careful when drilling you can crack your tubs very easily if you push to hard. the best thing to do is burn holes in the with a wood burning pen. You can get them at the hobby section at walmart.. they are about 10 bucks

I need to get a new fan. The fan I have doubles as a space heater and I am afraid to leave it on when I am not there. 54% is great for a ball but I have Kenyans and a rubber boa in that rack. I would love for it stay between 40 low and 50% high.

Subzero, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. Basically, you should just experiment with the number of holes. You do not need very many holes for the snake to breath. Its just a matter of controlling the enviroment inside the tub.

Hey Subzero, one more thing. IMPORTANT. Do not drill holes near the bottom of the tub or the substrate will fall out of the holes when the snakes move around. I learned this the hard way. I use shredded aspen and my sand boas were pushing it out of the holes. What a mess.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to prep my tubs while I waited for my damn rack to come in. Just trying to pass time. But I guess ill wait till it gets here so I can have accurate humidity scores to compare.

To the person trying to lower they humidity, try using a different substrate? If you using a machine to lower humidity also add a normal fan to take air out of the basement, basements are tough, have any cracks running along the floors or walls? Get a good concrete stain/sealant and paint the whole floor/walls with it, should help. Youve got all the ground moisture getting in there.

I had thought that with racks you don't need holes, the gap between the tub and ceiling should be enough.

Some racks do not have a 'gap' ;)

Keep in mind that humidity is your friend and dont drill too many holes. :)

I got tired of smelling the fumes. I got a step drill bit. It starts with a small hole and increases in diameter as it goes deeper. I found it easirer than the soldering gun. I had a buddy that drilled thousands of holes and never seemed to get a crack in the tub.
