New to the site
Whats up guys, im new to this site and forum, im am planning on getting a ball python, and im doing my homework on them before i buy it to make sure i know how to take care of them and everything, i have a question about feedin them in a seperate tank, i know that after u feeed them u shouldnt handle them for like e24 to 48 hours, but if i feed him/her in a seperate caontainer, how long do i have to wait to at least put him back to his regular tank? and what kind of thermastat and humidity guage would u guys recomand.

You don't have to feed in a different tank I feed all mine in their tank.
But if you do be careful some will stay in feeding mode for hours after eating and you might get bit.

I use helix dbs1000 on all my racks and Accurite thermometer/humidity gauge for humidity.Stay away from the dial and strip thermometers and hygrometers they have a bad habit of being bad wrong.
Hope this helps and agian welcome.

Hello and Welcome! :D You'll get great advice and support here........... the care sheet section has volumes of knowledge as well! :sunny:

Re: New to the site
Welcome aboard! :handshake
As has already been noted, it's not necessary to feed them in a separate enclosure...but if you feel like that's what you want to do...it won't hurt them to very gently scoop them up and move them back to their own home. Just don't "play" with 'em...and be sure to support the whole body, not just grab 'em around the middle.
It's always great to see someone wanting to learn about a new pet before they go out and buy it! :gj:

Re: New to the site
Thanks For all the welcomes, this site is very helpful and the people are very nice and helpfull. this is what i got so far, i bought the starter kit from petco it came with a 30x12x12 cage with a clip in top, Zoo Med Premium Substrates, hiding spot, water bowl, UTH and some hadn cleaners or something, is there anything else that i need to get other than the thermostat

Re: New to the site
make sure you have two hides of the same size. Just your thermometer/ hygrometer and sounds like your set. If your using a glass tank heres a good visual on how to set it up.

They don't need any special lighting. Just room lights are fine.

Make sure the hiding spots are snug and secure not open, The half log hides are a terrible idea.... just my$.02

They're just too big and open for a ball python. They prefer their hides to be very snug and closed in...so they can feel completely buried and "hidden" within. If they can feel the sides of the hide all around and above them...they love it.

Re: New to the site
I used some nice $5 bowls I got from Target and drilled holes in for hides. The half logs aren't secure like a bowl or a container is. They're too open. They want to feel like they're hidden.

To tell you the truth all that stuff is unecessary... All they need (want) is a water bowl, a couple identical hides, proper temps/humidity.... But that doesnt mean you cant decorate there enclosures, it just means you have more to clean every week.... But good luck... :salute: :2cent:

Re: New to the site

Re: New to the site
Quick question, im still looking into the snake thing, but i just thought of something else, i have a ferret that i let loose around the house will the ferret runnning around have any affect on the snake, will it make the snake stress or upset or anything seeing the feret all over the place
-
Re: New to the site
Can you put the snake in a room the ferret isn't allowed into? If there's a potential for escape or the ferret getting into the enclosure the outcome would not be good...
I keep mine in a closet so the dogs don't upset him. He loves it, it's secluded and dark with no traffic.

Re: New to the site
well the ferret wouldnt b able to reach the cage cause im gonna have the cage on top of a book shelf, no i really dont have anywhere else to put the snake cage, live in a small one bedroom apt. the only way the snake could get to the ferret is if it would get out of its cage.
-
Re: New to the site
Is it a tall bookshelf? Is the snake even going to be able to "see" the ferret?
-
Re: New to the site
its a 3 shelf book shelf and the cage will be on the top of the shelf, i guess if the ferret will get close to the shelf he wont b able to see it but if its further away he would, the ferrets cage is goin to b on the other side of the living room, across from the snakes cage.

Re: New to the site
So long as everything is secure, it should be fine. It wouldn't be any different than a cat or small dog moving around the room. I doubt the snake will even notice unless the critter is right up against the glass in the snake's face, so to speak.
