Re: Liger- Lion and Tiger cross DUW
My god that is a big animal... Did they take those pictures like a split second before the liger attacked? LOL. Sorry, cruel sense of humor...

Re: Liger- Lion and Tiger cross DUW
They forgot to tell you that they're bred for their skills in magic ;)

Re: Liger- Lion and Tiger cross DUW
They are awesome looking. I saw this a while back and I know a lot of people on the yahoo group didn't believe it was a real animal. If anyone has any doubt, here is site that owns this animal.: http://www.tigers-animal-actors.com/index2.html

Dang, beat me to it! :giggle:
But yeah, wow, gorgeous and HUGE animals! I forget if a Liger is where the mother is a lion and the father is a tiger or the other way around... the Tigon is whichever is the other pairing of parents is and tends to be smaller than a Liger.

Since 1999 the park has bred its male lion and female tiger many times, producing about 24 cubs.

Not sure how this could happen unless you're talking about Asian lions. African lions are from Africa and no subspecies of Tiger is native to that continent.
I did see the documentary about the female lion; I was actually discussing it with a co-worker today.

I saw that! I felt so bad for the little gazelle! After the show it said that she tried raising like five more but two died of starvation two got eaten by other predators and the other one got back to its mother, or something like that. Then it said she dissapeared. It was an interesting show though

Re: Liger- Lion and Tiger cross DUW
Actually I just recently saw a preview for a show on animal planet about asian lions. They are very rare, but do exist. So its possible it could happen in the wild.
Beautiful animal and I just love the faint markings.

Re: Liger- Lion and Tiger cross DUW
Even if it COULD happen in the wild...I really don't think a liger would thrive. They are not built to be an ambush predator like either a lion or tiger, so in terms of stalking it would do poorly because of shear size. And as far as its running ability, I figure the bigger something is the slower it is...and we all know big cats use speed and agility to catch their prey.
I just think the size would be a major disadvantage...to power himself he would have to eat a ton of food, but it would be burned up in a short amount of time...I would think a liger would have to be a super scavenger otherwise it would starve in a wild setting.
Just my thoughts.

Re: Liger- Lion and Tiger cross DUW
Oh by the way for those that want to know a bit more about Asiatic Lions I've found a great site with loads of info. Here's a link with their range, and in fact they are known to have been found in the ranges of tigers.
