Temps for Rats
Question for all you rat breeders, what is the ideal room temperature range for rats?
We have built an insulated "Rat Room" in the garage and I have been playing with the temps using a fan and an oil filled heater. I plan on using a small window type Air conditioner later in the summer, but it got me thinking about what sort of temp ranges rats need, and what is best for productivity.
Any opinions?

Ideally around 70-72 and as low as 65 is fine. Nothing over 75-76. They start getting a little uncomfortable, they drink more, pee more and smell more.

Thanks Jamie, I think I should be able to maintain that. We have such wierd weather here that I could see times where I have to run heat at night and AC during the day. Hopefully with insulating that won't be necessary.
Will post some pics soon.

You should be fine. They tolerate colder temps better than hot.

The guy gave me ice cubes from the previous tenant at his place. They tasted like pure ass. Well actually, it was Kelli's fault, not his.

Re: Temps for Rats
I've always found with my colony that cooler is better than too hot. Rats just go flat out in high heat, low ventilation/air movement type conditions.
Okay maybe I need more coffee this morning or I read that wrong? You got somebody's used, second hand ice cubes Jamie??? LOL

I agree. :) My rat room (aka: the laundry room) stays within the 65-70 degree range. In hotter weather, it works because the room is not insulated and in colder months, the heat vent keeps it ideal without it being as warm as the rest of the house (Such horrible heating efficiency! Luckily our gas is inculded in the rent here...)
