Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
A breeder of cresties here in Tucson has a Moonglow...have only seen a pic of one in a book that he showed me and I can not find a pic of one on the net.
He says he put him in with his hypomelanistic for breeding and the babies came out wild looking...all yellow and orange. I am trying to get him to take pics and bring them in to the reptile store that he works at.
Anyone seen one before or have one??
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
moonglows are somewhat controversial. a lot of people call their geckos moonglows when in fact they are not. a true moonglow crested is pure white--no other color pigments exist and they don't fire up the way a normal crested does. instead of darkening when they fire up they lighten from a dull white to a bright white.
some people call their gecko a moonglow because it is very light colored when not fired up, but this is completely incorrect. it is common for a red or yellow gecko to be quite pale during the day or when it isn't fired up. basically, if the gecko has any color at any time it isn't a moonglow.
what exactly is this breeder referring to as a hypomelanistic crested? does he just mean one that doesn't have dark pigment or no dalmation spots or what exactly? hypomelanistic isn't generally a term used to describe cresteds...
as far as the babies being wild looking--i have produced many yellow and orange cresteds. are these somehow different? i'm skeptical. i need pictures. i am visualizing a pale yellow gecko (which he calls the moonglow) being bred to another gecko that is maybe a patternless pale orange or something similar--of course you would get yelllow and orange babies...
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
Hi Emily...thank you for explaining that to me! I have never seen his "moonglow" or "hypomelonistic" Just heard what he has told me and pics form a book showing me what "he" had. I have asked him to bring pics in for me to see but have yet to see any! He works at the reptile store that I get my feeders and stuff from. He says he has a website but when I asked what it was he said it had no pics because he sold all of his cresties so quick, usually has them sold before they hatch that he has not put any more pics back up. I had originally thought of dealing with this guy, but have now decided not to.
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
does he have pics of his breeders or anything else on his web site? i can't believe a breeder or anyone else who sells animals/goods wouldn't give your their site address, if not just for their contact information! what a weirdo. maybe he's just totally bluffing, trying to impress you or something.

LMAO:P I know he breeds just not what because he always has baby cresties in the store that are his that he sells...I know they are his from talking to a few of the girls that work there also....He does seem to have the attitude of wanting to impress though now that you metion it:)
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
Isn't the moonglow a leucistic type? White (lacking pigment) w/ dark eyes... As far as I know no one has produced true "moonglow" cresteds.
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
no, there is no actual leucistic crested that i know of nor is there an albino. someone may produce one one day but that has yet to happen. the moonglow is lacking in almost all color pigment, but it is not truly leucistic.

So basically like the leos that are deemed "leucistic"...when in fact they are not.
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
i guess so--i'm not as familiar with leo morphs though. :)
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
I'm really going to "try" to get him to give me some pics or maybe email me some pics of this "moonglow" and the babies...may take a while but will try my best:)

Here is a few pics of my moonglow, his name is Casanova...

(Before shipping-sellers pic of him)

This is him settled in in my home a bit later..he lost his tail due to stress during shipping, but he is still awesome just the same.
All pics are of him in his resting state.... when he "fires" up, he is even a brighter white. Casanova does have dalmation spots here and there....

Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
in his resting, non-fired up state cassanova is a nice light color and is certainly lighter than most cresteds get when they aren't fired up, but honestly he isn't a moonglow. jeanne, i know that the breeder you got him from called him a moonglow, but he was mistaken. i pulled up this old post with other pics of cass: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=29013. the fact that he fires up and has any real visual color pigment makes him not an actual moonglow. i hope i'm not coming across as a butt--i just don't want people to be confused about what a true moonglow is.
i once bought a supposed moonglow, and believe me, the photos the breeder sent me were great. here she is:
http://cookreptiles.com/collection/cookie.jpg
as you can see--not a moonglow at all. she gets quite light at times but that doesn't make her anything other than not fired up/showing her daytime colors. i love her just the same though, and she has made some super nice RED babies for me. :)
Re: Has anyone heard of a Moonglow?....
OH! Though I remembered you saying that a true moonglow would have no color or spots,,,but still it is a very nice looking crestie:)
