    Do you do Tofu?
So--I bought some tofu for the first time today, and I'm going to try it out in a stirfry tomorrow. I have some marinating in italian dressing (because I've discovered everything tastes good marinated in italian dressing). But I was wondering what some other good ways (besides soup) were to eat tofu?

We were discussing the merits of soy in my nutrition class, so I'm going to try some soy products out to see how/if I like them :)

It tastes good sauteed with vegetables. I have many vegetarian friends (actually I'm the only meat eater in the group) so if want more recipes I can prob get some good ones for you.

p.s. I also had it with pasta and a peanut butter dressing once... to good for words

It'd rock if you could snag me some recipies! I'm not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination (I LOVE my steaks medium-rare)...but I'm trying to watch my calories and get more calcium simultaniously :) If I could replace meat with tofu and beans a few nights a week, it would help!

So, ask your veggie friends for recipies with lots of flavor but not lots of calories/fat :D

    Thanks!

Ever have miso soup? It's the little bouncy white cubes in the soup :) It appears in asian dishes a lot, has no flavor of its own, but kinda absorbs the flavor of whatever it's cooked with.

Well my friends with the good recipes are both on vacation and the only other one online says to wing it. He says if you like the looks of bananas put bananas in. Although he did give me somthing more concrete, tofu, egg, bread crums, and soy sauce. Mix the first three together until the crumbs stick cook till theyre brown and add soy sauce as you wish. I'd try it out a bit at a time to see if you like it first though. He's not great on instructions. :P

Mmmm, I do love miso soup! The only other way I've seen it is Tempura fried, but I'm guessing that wouldn't be good for your diet, ahaha.

Possibly ;) Though I'm sure if tofu had any negative side effects on males, there would be many non-reproductive/unhappy vegan and vegetarian men out there... You're probably safe.

    Freezing tofu!

I learned this trick from a vegetarian boyfriend in college.

Freeze it -once- and thaw it out. The resulting block will be spongy instead of smooth, and will uptake marinades much better, as well as be more resiliant if you're frying slabs of it. It will shed a lot of its water when it thaws as well.

Don't freeze it twice though...you just get wierd crumbly stuff.

    Re: Do you do Tofu?
I find it best to substitute it for meat in Chili, soup or Mexican food. Some potent chili or a nice bean and tofu burrito with all the fixings covers the tofo up nicely. I'll have to try that freezing thing to see if it helps with the texture at all. I would also think that tofu and fruit smoothies would be ok. Maybe chop it up and marinate it in Pineapple juice for a day so you can't taste it in the drink. Soy milk's not bad either. I've stopped drinking pasturized milk recently after reading that calves fed pasturized whole cow's milk die within a week. Vanilla soy protein shakes rock. Other than that I eat the hell of of any meat, also rare/medium rare. Whatever it is it has to be sitting in a puddle of blood (except chicken).

I've never had tofu before, but I'm up for trying it. I would love to go vegetarian, but I just now started having money for myself, and buying my own groceries was not an option a month ago. Now I can though. :) So here goes my third attempt at going veg.

Could you link me to that study please?

Calves can drink pasteurized milk just fine, provided it's been repopulated with the apropriate microbes. They are obligatorily dependant on their gut flora for digestion. Newborn calves have no gut flora and must obtain it from the environment. There's nothing toxic about pasteurized milk, they just have a different way of digesting it than we do.

I marinated some, in slices, overnight in Italian dressing and pressed it between paper towels (as per my boyfriend's suggestion--to get it a more "meat-like" texture). Then I stir-fried it with brown rice and black beans.

It was okay--I thought it would absorb a litte more flavor than it did. I think smaller strips would be better in a stir fry. I'm going to try again tonight with brown rice, black beans, onions, garlic, olive oil and adobo. :)

I'm sure with some tweaking, I can find a way I really like it.

I understand that it is the lack of enzymes and microbes in pasteurized milk that are the cause. I never said it was toxic or anything like that. It's the same thing with meat and vegetables. Raw is the way to go with food, but pasturized milk and dairy in general is not very healthy. I can't find the artical I read, but I'm sure if you do a search for acid forming foods and their negative affects on health, or mucoid plaque, or even for studies on pasteurized milk and calves you will be surprised.

sorta like if one of us (except tom green) were to shove a mouse:mouse2: into our mouth and swallow it whole...the digestion probably (i can't verify this...yet :evileye: )wouldn't be fun

I'll eat tofu, but I'm not a big fan... tastes pretty bland.

However, I eat tons of edamame! Good stuff, hot or cold. :chew:

It was...okay. This time around, I'm slicing them into thinner pieces so that they're less bouncy and more "cooked" feeling, if that makes sense. The outsides of the last batch were tasty--I cooked them on the iron pan first so they got a nice cruncy burnty taste on the outside, but the middle was still flobbery.

This time, I'm slicing thinner, so I hope they'll be more cruncy-tasting :)
