    Need a new name
Just bought my first ball python this past Monday and in a hurry to name him I went with a name my cousin suggested, Monty. Given that this isnt exactly very original Im searching for a new name. I have some possibilities but cant quite narrow it down...

Yes! I like Himeros too. I always name my pets something with meaning, like my BP is Altair('Swift one' in Arabic) and the cresties I'm getting soon will be names Acheron and Lethe('woe' and 'forgetfulness' in Greek, also rivers that lead to Hades.)

Sure, the big names are a mouth full, but they have lots more meaning. :)
Himeros is the same thing as Cupid by the way.

I want to name my first one Shosholoza. It means "move on" in I think its zulu. Of course it would end up being Shosh for short.

my advice is go with what works don't spend hours of research and come up with a name that you have to spell and pronounce to every person you meet...(or don't do it and laugh at them as they struggle with it:D )

i try and think of what the item/ person/ animal make me feel good about and then name it to reflect that. so i named my snake monty cause whenever i looked at him (especially when he's trying to eat) i would crack up and think of that stupid Monty python theme music ( duhduh dada duhduhduh dada daduhdaduh dada) when i named my car (of blessed memory) Big Blue Bertha the Brainless Basher it made me feel good.

thats all im drivin at really if you think about it.

oh one last thing...not doing something (like nameing your snake Monty) because it's unoriginal is (in my humble opinion) a bad reason for not doing it

I think my Monte will become a Nag... or is that the second most common name? :D

I only named him Monty cuz I wanted to name him when I got him. But as time went on I wanted something more original and different than 'Monty'.

hehe and this is my first endeavor into the snake world, so I didn't realize that Monte wasn't actually all that original after all :D I'm sure you're going to come up with an awesome name for him!! I was just musing at the fact that there was a "need a new name" thread and the original name was the same as my guy's name... I hope I didn't offend...

Sweet! My sister just leaves her corn alone when it sheds... so what have you learned in the last short while about how to handle your ball's shed? Inquiring minds blah blah blah

Well I guess you are actually supposed to leave them alone since they can be moody, at least when there eyes are cloudy. Which is where he is in the shedding atm. However I read this as my friend was holding him, after she asked if he might bite and I told her no. So given the fact that he basc couldn't see he was pretty friendly. He made no move to strike or anything like that, he pretty much sat there although he did move around a little bit. I noticed today that his eyes are even cloudier, which looks really weird, so hopefully he should shed soon so I can actually see him eat :D

Yeah I' looking forward to Nag's first meal with me! And to getting my mite treatment! I have the heebeejeebees from even knowing they're there... too scary like fleas to me! *shudder* But I think he just shed because of that opalescent sheen on him... not that I know what I'm talking about though LMAO.

When I bought him the lady was like o yeah it looks like they all went through a good shed...I guess not. But Im hoping that was the reason he wasnt eating when I tried to feed him. And the mouse I got for him died today, poor Jackson (my friend named him why idk). And as far as the mites, do you have to treat as a preventitive thing, or only if you actually see them?

I don't know much about it. My questions about mites have gone largely unanswered honestly... but I did find talk of the Provent-a-mite and purchased it... People did say it was the best out there for this... and gave me a suggestion for while I'm waiting for the shipment... I'm sure you could use it as a prevention, but I am only saying that based on the name of the product!

Yeah I have a neighbor with a 4' corn snake and he couldn't advise my sister anything about her hatchling... everything he did say was bunk info anyway LMAO... I wonder how his snake has lasted so long sometimes, he's so immature and down right dumb at times... ... ... but he's a 21 year old boy from a big family of brothers... I guess he'll come around shortly :D

Did you see my thread on the general herp board? I got some good advice about the right way to do internet research on snakes...LOL write it down and if you see it again and again, circle it... if not, discard it... there were some great tidbits there hopefully they'll help you too :)

Follow the Provent-A-Mite instructions exactly. A lot of ppl here (myself included) use it as a pre-treatment when getting new animals and placing them in quaratine. (Quarentine is a must..esp. if you have an established collection). Mites like to move and can go from room to room, or piggy-back on your clothing, arms, shoes, etc.

Do a search in the husbandry for various mite, and temp, feeding, care threads. Have you read the caresheets here on site? They're very helpful.

If your snake is "in blue" (his eyes are opaque) then in a day or two they'll clear up, and he'll shed a day or so after that. My snakes tend to shed 4-5 days after I notice they're blue. BUT I do have a couple, that I can't tell they're in blue but they're dull looking....or like Oreo, she's burrowed all the time, and I don't know she's shed until I find it in the bedding.

Daniel also posted a really informative sticky about the shedding cycle and what to watch for, and what to do.

    Welcome to the site! :handshake

I like Telemachus. That kid had guts.

And as for mites, everything I've read as far as PREVENTATIVE maintenance is clean clean clean, and make sure you're not bringing in foreign elements to his cage that might have mites (branches, etc.). If he HAS them, that Provent stuff seems to be what everyone recommends.

That was my understanding from all the books I have. >>
