decisions decisions...

OK, I had originally fallen head over heels for a rainbow boa at a local pet store. Now, with the school project I'm doing, I discovered the leucistic texas rat snake, and have fallen in love again.

question is, which one do I want most right now?

I'm going to be able to get one at a time probably, and I just cant decide which one I like more.

anyone have opinions? is one easier to care for the the other?

They're both gorgeous snakes!

I would think that BRBs are more tricky to take care of than rat snakes...but someone correct me if I'm wrong. I've never owned either species.

that's a tough one!

I will need to make a similar decision myself in about a year :rockon:

according to some things I have read recently and heard from other BRB owners, they are not as forgiving as BPs as far as husbandry goes. Unfortunately I cant find much on the pretty white ones to tell me one way or another.

however I do think I could be leaning toward the white ones. I did find one breeder online for the rat snake, but not much else.

anyone else want to chime in the the white ones? :wuv:

I have a LTR....got it from Crystal here (4theSnakeLady). Awesome little snake. Eats like a pig. Husbandry is like a corn. Can be cooler and dryer (lower humidity) than the balls (but she's kept similar to the balls on the UTH controls), and much more forgiving when the temps have gone wonky in our house. Only skipped a meal once, and then shed a couple of days later. She was eating 2-3 mouse pinks regularly. Now she's up to a rat pink a week, and I've had her a year April? May?

She's veeeeeeery long and skinny and almost out grown her 10g tank (for length) but she loves her hides and has been very easy to care for. But watch out for the bug-eyes. Some consider them a desireable trait and breed FOR it, but it's a defect. My little girl is buggy-eyed and is visually hampered, possibly blind.

There's a thread here somewhere where Crystal posted pics of the parents and the babies after they hatched.

I'd suggest the LTR before the BRB, but that's just me. I've really enjoyed our little girl. :)

Here is a caresheet for BRB. This should give you an idea of what's involved. Jeff Clark (no relation) is one of the best breeders and before we concentrated on emeralds, we had a couple of them.

Not being biased or anything, (i breed leucys) but as far as care goes, the white rat snakes are much easier. BRBs need high stable humidity, and also cost much more when purchasing. They are beautiful snakes, but do require more specialised care. Both are available at reptile shows, but I can almost guarantee you'll pay more for the BRB. I've seen ugly ones go for $100!! :O

I also have a LTR snake and absolutely love her!! Very active and no real special needs as far as husbandry. Has NEVER refused a meal. Eats like a pig. Besides the fact that she is just beautiful to look at.:D

I was considering a BRB but I am holding off for now since they are not as forgiving of husbandry mistakes and require lrger cages. I don't have a lot of room. do love the BRB too though. So I say go with what attracts you the most.

I also recommend a LTR I got one this year and she is an awesome snake, very active and quite striking. A friend of mine bought a pair of BRB's last october and he had nothing but trouble with his female, she is a real problem eater:(

Also, the leucistic Texas rat is known to be nippy, so that's something to consider as well.

i am getting an female LTR june 9th, so i can't really give ya any info other then what i have read about and learned here...

I have one, and he's the sweeeeetest thing. He rattles like he's a big meany but he's not tried to bite. He's a year? (almost a year?) but if he were to bite, it wouldn't mean much or do much damage.

I love his colors too!

My earlier post from March refers to my pet as "she". We've since found out it's a him, not a "her".
