Tim.....Angolans are often refered to with "dwarf" in their names.....Angolan Dwarf Python.....African Dwarf Python....or just Dwarf Python...

I have never figured out why the term "dwarf" is used though....I am not sure if 'Python anchietae' means 'dwarf python'....or if they are just described as 'dwarf' because they are one of the smaller snakes in its range....

maybe someone could shed some light on it.

If you are referring to me selling the female sibs to my albino, I do not need them. I wanted an albino (which BTW you offered me and then backed out on me) and to get it, I needed to buy the trio.

Python anchietae is named after José Alberto de Oliveira Anchieta, the Portuguese naturalist who made the Angolan Python known to Western Europe. It was called a Dwarf Python by him.

There are several species in different genera that carry the "anchietae" title in their species name. Bocage was the one who named it after him.

Apparently, that name, date info after a Species name is useful for something. :)

    Your Welcome.:handshake

I always like a good question...at first I thought it meant something in Latin...but when I looked it up on an online Latin translator and found nothing I tired looking it up using the (name, date) info for the species.

Mendel, great info. almost every book that I have refers to them as African Dwarf Pythons, but I know they are a little bigger than my ball pythons as adults. :)

It probably isnt the best common name.....but I guess "Dwarf" is a relative term. They are "dwarfs" relative to African Rocks. Does anyone know if the ranges of these two species overlap?

Stefan Broghammer talks briefly in his book about the ball pythons and python anchietae not overlapping in their respected ranges and being far apart from one another. also the fact that they are close cousins. :)
