Stupid Stupid Petco Employee(pic)

Ok so me and the wife went to petco to get some frozen feeders today. Well a customer came in who had bought an albino kingsnake from them a couple days ago said it wouldn't stop biting. So as i'm ease dropping on the conversation the employee takes the snake from the guy and starts to look it over and then tells the guy that it's biting all the time cause it's blind. BLIND! Holy crap so I made my way over to see if I could give my two cents and asked the employee how she can tell its blind. So she starts waving her hand in front of the snake and she says "see the snake doesn't move and his eyes are pink" LOL oh my gosh! I told the customer that it was'nt blind and that baby kings are a bit nippy and even as adults. So he got a little upset cause petco did'nt tell him anything about this snake. At this point he's chewing out the employee and then hands me the snake and tells me I could have it. I really was'nt expecting this nor did I need another snake. I tried to explain to him that you need to give it time to adjust to its new enviroment and proper handling will calm him down. But he still decided he did'nt want it and told me that I probably could give it a better home. So I took him and brought him home and now I'm trying to piece a quick rubbermaid together. I'm still in aww over what happened. Here's a pic of the snake.

Wow, im not a kingsnake kinda girl, but that snake sure is awesome!

Pretty lil' guy. I wish someone would throw cute ones at me. Love the colors, What is that color called?

You know there should a pet owners test before being able to buy a reptile. Kinda liek a drivers liscense test, lol.

The things Petco employees will say...

Sumtimes i wanna just slap a petco employee upside the head and the problem is sometimes if you try and say something the people belive the employee not you lol

Insanity! I remember a guy at a pet store years ago, telling me that all albino animals are blind (I was buying an albino clawed frog.) Years later, I have an albino Oscar cichlid, and my mom comes over and says "oh, that fish is blind, right?" She remembered that pet store persons's incorrect words from years ago, and I informed her that nope, albinos are not blind. :) So I wonder where the albinos-are-blind thing came from?

I still can't get over the "he's blind cause he has pink eyes". LOL just makes me laugh.

Probaly from people thinking that albinos can't stand bright light and have sensitive eyes. Think sunburn on albino.

Im glad you took in the snake. If the would of been owner didnt know much abou tthe snake (which he should of don ehis homework) and th epetstore person. IM GLAD you took in the snake. But since you have enough snakes. I;ll tak ethis ole snakey off your hands for you. Heck I'll be generous and wont even charge you.:D

No kidding I' thinking of opening a snake rescue and rehab next year.

Your Petco employee reminds me of ours who has gotten albinos, mojaves and pastels in their shipments and scoops them up for herself :nods:

What do you mean, exactly? Most of the time, pet stores don't accidentally order high end snakes....unless you mean the store orders them on purpose and she buys them afterwards.

I mean that I didn't buy what she was saying - she was just trying to show off.

I think the myth originates from some albino mammals having that problem. Lack of melanin in the eyes causes photosensitivity and sometimes problems with sight with mammals but I think people have a tendency to generalize that information in with reptiles.

yup. older people make the mistake thinking that im some dumb kid who doesnt know anything.

and thats why im waiting for petco to call me since they should be hiring this month again(hopefully) and i'll get the job there make sure the animals are in kept in good health along with the job itself.

I was at petco a few hours ago picking up some mice and had to take a look over at their reptile section, and what do I find? I find three bp's in HORRIBLE shape. They're about 2 feet long, and about as thick as you'd expect a 16'' bp to be, blued out in 20% humidity/95 degree tanks with no temp grade, and covered in wrinkles. I felt absolutely horrible. Had I $240 dollars I would not have allowed those snakes to stay in such horrible conditions.

I pitched one of the biggest fits that I'm sure this particular petco had ever seen and had every employee short of the cash register lady over by the tanks helping me fix the conditions. Boo on them.

Needless to say I got my mice for free for helping their bp's and got inside news about a shipment of red tailed boas that I may need to look into ;) .

Petco just surprises me each time I go over there in the saddest ways.

That is a GORGEOUS king! I've never striping like that. =D

Oh, wait, hang on, since I'm an albino, have pink eyes and thus, am blind... let me go back up in the thread and feel that pic.... oh yes, very nice snake. :lol

If I had a dime for everyone who thinks that if it's albino it's blind....we'd ALL be rich! :D
While yes, albinos (no matter what species they are) are more prone to having poorer (is that a word?) eyesight than normally pigmented animals and people and yes, they are more inclined to be photophobic...doesn't make us/them blind. :rolleyes:
But hey, free snakes, especially good looking ones is always cool!

That is quite possibly one of the craziest and coolest stories of random encounters that i've heard. kudos to you!

Unfortunate that this particular employee was anywhere near the reptile dept. I can not defend the entire company but usually if a compitant employee is working near a department, or responds to a page, we try I repeat try to make sure that they are certified with the animals in that department. Sadly not all are and like everywhere you go you get people who think they can make something up(which petco frowns on) instead of telling the customer sorry I don't know, let me get my manager to better assist you. We tell our new hires to NEVER make something up, if you don't know ask a associate that does. On another note the associate should have offered the customers money back. This experience saddens me being someone who does the right thing, i have all four departments certifications and if i do not know a customers answer, I will A.find a Manager who does or try to find the answer in petcos many resources, this after saying to the customer "That is a good question, let me see if I can find the right answer. Please do not judge every employee by a few bad ones.
