I am soooo excited!
I'll be going to Austin next week to speak to the Texas legislators about women's health and reproductive rights! I've been an activist for a while, but this will be my first time actually making my case in a formal setting. I'm so nervous, but at the same time I just can't wait to get there!
Right now, all I can think about is what to wear.

Re: I am soooo excited!
YOU GO GURL!!!! :carrot: :carrot: :carrot:
Um, Black Suite, White shirt???? Very strong visually!
Best of luck! :D

Re: I am soooo excited!
Thanks!
I'm really good at public speaking, and I'm very passionate about women's health, so I think this is going to be a good fit for me.
I'm wanting to work pink into my outfit, so do you think a black suit and pink blouse? Or should I go with a tan suit? I'm leaning towards black right now.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!

Re: I am soooo excited!

Re: I am soooo excited!
I'd go with pink shirt, grey suit....powerful but feminine. Congrats on the chance to speak for so many on such important issues.

DITTO. Make sure that the shirt is plain, and the suit is comfortable.
Please take this the correct way -- I mean for you to present the best POLITICAL image. I was a consultant for a while...
I don't know what your physical appearance is however. If you are thin wear a pant suit (preferably dark grey or dark blue with thin pinstripes). If you are Reubanesque then you would be better with a long skirt in a solid Dark blue or Black and a waist length jacket that fits well and compliments your hair color (paisley is great - but hard to find).
Pink shirt is definitely a good choice.
Best of luck. and remember, in politics you must remain "cool" at all times no matter how thick-headed the oppostion gets. Don't get visibly frustrated -- it will weaken your credibility.

Re: I am soooo excited!
Wow, thanks for that advice, Akiva! Here's what I look like:
http://sarah.digeratihost.com/images/mysnakes1.jpg
I'm no skinny size 2, I'm just sorta...healthy.
So maybe the dark grey pant suit would be ok? Maybe some pinstripes.
I definitely agree with your advice on remaining cool.

Re: I am soooo excited!
Pinstripes always work Sarah, combined with the touch of pink it should work well. It is really sad but in our world, as women, we have to dress to the occasion so much more carefully then men. They can just toss on a decent suit, comb their hair, be well groomed and they are basically good to go. Rarely does anyone say "well he had a good point but did you see that crappy suit on him!". Unfortunately it is still a society though that will judge your words and committment to a cause by how much cleavage you do or don't show, the length of your skirt and the heaviness of your makeup. Sad fact but a fact nonetheless so being a smart female you can use this to your own ends, and make it work for you. :)

Re: I am soooo excited!
GO SARAH GO!
The grey pinstripes and some pink will look great.
Best of luck! Keep us all posted on how it goes!

Re: I am soooo excited!
I'm so proud of you... keep up the great work Sarah!

Sarah, You are going to talk about women's issues -- absolutely under no circumstances should you show any cleavage!!! That is seen as a cheap trick.
OH, men are held to a high standard today. I am, unfortunately, a good looking "blonde" man, and I fall into the pretty boy category. I have to be extra careful with my dress or I will be seen as a flake.

Re: I am soooo excited!
Thanks, ya'll :D
I'm about to go shopping for a dark grey suit with pinstripes, darkish pink shirt with no cleavage, and of course some modest shoes that match. This should be fun!
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
Awesome; I seriously applaud you for standing up for womankind. So many people are very vocal on their stances on things butdo nothing to inform others; I seriously admire you for going and doing something about it!
I would probably advise against pink; it seems to stereotypically feminine, and it always enrages me how people push pink on their little girls and blue on boys.. as a kid, I was lucky enough to be given both "girly" toys (Barbies, etc) and tons of Mtchbox cars, transformers, etc.
But enough about me! I wish you some serious luck and the ability to come across to the people you speak to. :)

Re: I am soooo excited!
Well, wearing pink is kind of a Planned Parenthood thing.
I went to four stores and didn't find anything good today. Actually, I didn't find a single dark grey suit with pinstripes at all. I'm going to have to hit the mall this weekend.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
That definitely sounds very exciting! Since you're coming through Waco to get to Austin, why not stop by here. Maybe we could do a little shopping just in case you haven't found anything good to wear to the event. I know we have a few good stores that have nice pantsuits.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
I wish I could, but I'll be on a bus :(
Hey, maybe if you aren't busy next weekend, I could just plan to come down and visit? I keep saying I will, right?
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
That'd be good! I'm not busy on weekends anymore thanks to a job change, so I'll be free :)
Good luck with the shopping, I know how tough it can be trying to find a pair of dress pants that actually fit in the right places.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
Haha, well I live to shop, and it's one of the things I do best, so it's really not torture. I'm thinking I'll go out to Grapevine Mills this weekend and let Jeff and Marc hang out at Gameworks while Kristin and I scour 256 outlet stores for one lil ole suit, lol. Have you been there? You are definitely welcome to come up and spend the day shopping!
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
Ooh, that would be a blast. Let me know when, where and what time and I'll see what I can do. I like shopping, just so it's not for work clothes(ok, I love scrub tops...). I need another pair of jeans!

Actually, there is a Scrubs and Beyond outlet there, so you'll have the best of both worlds!
:D

As long as I get half and you are wearing the red shoes in the pictures...

Re: I am soooo excited!
70/30 and pink wedges for us both.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
I'm a day late and a dollar short - as always! But I want to wish you good luck, Sarah! I know you'll do awesome!
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
Thanks, Robin!
I'm actually not even nervous anymore, just eager to get there and learn as much as I can.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
 Grats on doing something proactive for womens' health rights! I'm a huge fan of darker suits with pinstripes. I found a pair of great black slacks with very small white and pink pinstripes running through them awhile back--they're my -favorite- dress pants :D
So...I wouldn't be averse to you wearing a black suit with pinstripes and a pink blouse of some kind :D I'm not a huge gray fan. Though whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll look powerful ;) As soon as you try the "right one" on, you'll just know.
Let us know how it goes!

Re: I am soooo excited!
GOOD CHOICE!!!
Try New York and Company (most all my work clothes come from there)
or Charlotte's Ruse or Express.... These guys usually have nice suites without looking "old lady like" if ya know what I mean and usually under $100.
GOOD LUCK!!!
You'll look amazing I'm sure! :wuv:

Re: I am soooo excited!
I'll be sure to post pics and an update!
I'll try to be more open-minded tomorrow while I'm shopping. I couldn't believe no one had dark grey, maybe it's just not 'in' this season. :disbelief:crazy:

Re: I am soooo excited!
The weekend has come and gone. Did you find anything.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
Oh yes, I did!
Becky and her mom came up on Saturday and helped me shop. We found a great dark grey suit with white pinstripes. The top I bought is a strange dark pink/almost red color, it will look great.
I'm going to take the jacket in to my alterations lady here in just a bit, to see if it's possible for her to shorten the sleeves just a bit by closing time tomorrow. She's done rush jobs for me before, so I think she will be able to do that. I really needed a petite size 6 blazer, but they only had the one I wanted in a regular 8. It still looks good on me, but I'd be more comfortable if the sleeves were just a touch shorter. I'll get her to take my picture while I'm there wearing it!
And I still need to find some shoes. Busy day today!
Oh, after all the shopping, Becky and her mom went out to the karaoke dive we like with us and a few of our friends. I'm not sure mom will ever recover, my friends are a bit....crazy.

Re: I am soooo excited!
GREAT!!!!! I'm sure that you will get many ocassions to wear the new suit.
If you can wear heels: black, pointy closed toe, ~2" spike heels, thin strap back.
-
Re: I am soooo excited!
Oh yes, I'm sure I will be wearing the suit a lot. I'm already making plans for Washington DC as well. It's funny, but once I got my outfit together, I realized that was all I was nervous about to begin with. Right now I'm just frustrated that I have to wait until Wednesday to do my thing! lol
Is it wrong that I get a little tingly when we start talking shoes?? I'll try to find some like you described, but the main thing I'll be going for is comfort, as I'll be walking around downtown Austin quite a bit.

Re: I am soooo excited!
This is really lame, but happens to be true.
Many companies in NYC have dress codes for proper attire. The companies insist that men and women change from their travel shoes to proper shoes outside of the building. All business transactions must be in proper attire. You would not believe the crazy reasons that people give for not doing business.
People will tune you out if they don't like something about you. You have a great suit, now you must follow up with great shoes. Another shoe to wear is a military style pump. BUT that sends a very conservative message. The slinky mid-height spike heel with pointy toe sends a message of being current with fashion and therefor current with whatever message that you want to speak about. (unless you are being a scientist talking to the military.)
Since you are going to be running around (no mater what shoes you wear) make sure that you wear good quality knee high "nude" hose stockings. These will prevent you from getting blisters, and won't show if you cross your legs.
BEST of luck and my best wishes. :sunny:

Re: I am soooo excited!
Gaaaaah, now I'm just frustrated. I went to 6 different stores and didn't find any shoes resembling that description. If they had backstraps, they were open-toed. Or if the weren't open-toed, they had those hideous super pointy witch toe.
Maybe I should just wear my boots. Those are going to KILL my feet, though.
I give up! And that's saying something, since it's been well established that I have a shoe fetish!

Well, we shall see! We'll just have to wait and see how all this works out for me. There are actually two different political agendas I am active in promoting, and I'm more than willing to travel! I like to go where the action is :devilish:

Thanks! I don't know why it is, but when I get in front of an audience, it's just like someone else takes over, and I really have a good time.
