Puppies
Ryan and I have been talking about possibly adding a puppy to the family. We love the cats but it doesn't alter the fact that we are die hard dog people. The breeds we have been considering are Rotts, German Shepherds, Dobes, American Bulldogs, and the bully/pit breeds. Our hours work so 90% of the time at least one of us would be home with a pup, there are a few days the hours overlap but not often. My work place allows pets, and we do tend to take dogs many places.
So, after inquiring about many puppies and lots of emails unreturned and lots of questions we might be going to look at these two tomorrow.
They are PBTs (pit bull terriers), 2 months old, first shots and all that. Looking at a male and a female, the descriptions of them and their photos catch me, there are eight pups in total to choose from, parents available to meet.
If we do deside on one the only thing that will irk me is the widespread myths about pits that will provent me from taking my dog everywhere with me.
So, here are the two we are considering.

Re: Puppies
ahhhhhhh sooooo adorable. :P

Re: Puppies
I know, that little girl just grabs my heart. But they describe her as the bratty prankster and I want to make sure she's not going to be too much for the cats (cant' really call them kittens anymore, they're seven months old *sniffle* except for Shiloh who is four months old)
The little boy is described as being the ultimate cuddle dog. Laid back and a snuggler.

soooooooo CUTE!!!!! :) CONGRATS!!! :P

Re: Puppies
I think they are both cute. I tend to lean toward males more. My males have always seemed more tolerable of other pets, unless the other pet were another male dog. Temperment isn't a gender specific thing though. Watch the puppies behavior and go from there. :D :D Or do like most of us and pick the one that steals your heart.:sunny:

Re: Puppies
In my experience with friends pits/staffs both genders have tendencies to have higher prey drive...but the best thing with the puppies being 8 weeks old is that you still have tons of time to train them to be very tolerant and unaggressive with kittens/dogs/rabbits/animals of all kinds. Consistant training can make that prey drive non-existant.
I'd go for the male, that eye throws me, but he looks like he's going to be a very pretty adult dog with great stout stature.
Have fun!

Re: Puppies
Pits are amazing dogs, and they love their people. They would be in doggy heaven to go to work with you. And as for the myths that go with them... :angered: But what I saw when I took mine with me (they went everywhere with me) was that without their ears and tails being cropped, most people didn't recognize them as pits. We had 2 pits and they are the biggest sweethearts you will ever see in my opinion. ;) We never had any major problems with the 'prey drive'...but we didn't have them around other animals too often. They did chase our cat but when she stopped running, so did they and they would all just sit and stare are eachother. They are easily trained that young...they will do anything for you.
I don't know how you could choose between those sweet faces!! We didn't in fact... we went to get one and ended up with 3 (one which we sold later) because we couldn't choose! Either way, good luck with your puppy!! :D

Re: Puppies
I do have experience with pits and staffies. I have a mix back home and trained quite a few. The dogs that drove me nuts with their prey drive tended to be the border collie types. They gave me eye twitches :)
I dont' know how I'm going to choose between those two faces. My husband has duty tonight (we totally forgot) so it looks like I might be the lone decision maker! No stress, no stress at all.
Around here I've noticed that if a dog even looks slightly like a pit people will steer clear. And since I'm against ear cropping it won't be done and their tails aren't cropped so that won't be done either. :)
Thanks for all the replies though guys.

As you know i also love staff/pits and pits :) .You can do like we did when we looked at the puppies of which we picked our little girl.My daughter and i looked at each pup and picked the one who seemed like she approved our attention lol.I guess you can say she chose us :P .Let us know what one you bring home.

Re: Puppies
Well, we got the little boy, or rather, I got the little boy since Ryan had duty today which I forgot about. We named him Kou (pronounced Co). Now we go through the joys of house training... he's currently 90% paper trained.
The cats aren't exactly thrilled. For about five minutes they all walked around totally poofed out. Now they are just avoiding him.
So, that's the update. :)

Re: Puppies
Such sweeties!!!! Take BOTH! :D :D *BAG*
My BIL has red noses. Two of the sweeeeetest dogs there are. I don't buy into the myth w/pits, but I also know there are lines that are more belligerent, but that happens in ANY breed and for most of the bully breeds, it's the training and the teasing that makes the aggression. Blaze was a very loving, if undisciplined dog. She just needed a loving, CARING home where she'd be trained. The guy who got her was 21 going on 6 and was sooooooo irresponsible, and Blaze paid for it.
Good luck in your choice! I don't envy you the decision!! It would be soooooo hard for ME to chose ONE!

Re: Puppies
the good news is you don't have to put Kou into a pen and leave him alone for a week. with only water changes...
which means... you can take pics today, tomorrow and the next day! let's see some more pics :please:

Re: Puppies
LOL Yes Aleesha, this is true.
We are up, and believe it or not he slept through the night. Due to the cats acting like the sky is falling he slept in Ryan and I's room...on the bed. I had THOUGHT we brought the puppy crate out with us ( I am a fan of crate training) but itm evidently was something I didn't fit in the car.
So anyway, back to the bed. I know bad habit but Ryan will do it too. Kou slept through the night, woke up twice to change positions and to see if I was awake and wanted to play. This morning I knew we'd never make it outside in time so I placed him directly on his paper then got around to take him outside where he decided it was too cold and he wanted me to carry him (HA fat chance, this puppy is a brick) then he was a good boy and figured he might as well poo outside.
So, we came back in and he played then decided he had to poo more so went straight to his paper (I'm so glad I have DON'T have a carpeted bathroom!) and now he's currently trying to get the cats to play.
Shiloh is staring down a him like "Hmm.. looks KINDA fun" Cooper is giving him the look of the antichrist and Hudson is walking around with his tail floofed out trying to bop him.
I'm going to wake up a bit and have breakfast then I'll get ya'll some pictures.
