stop the chirping

Does anyone know of a way to stop crickets from chirping. They are driving me insane.

Seriously though, I don't think that you can. Maybe get some earplugs?

Crickets usually stop chirping once a person gets close to them, so that makes it really hard to find a cricket that gets loose in the house. It is one of their natural responces to preditors, since a continuous chirp would lead the preditor directly to the insect via sound.

I feed all of my lizards 3/4 grown crickets because they 'chirp' alot less than adults IMO. Unless feeding adult crickets is a neccessity, I would suggest getting the 3/4 grown crix...it will help with the chirping. I usually feed off around 1000 3/4 grown crickets a week so they never have a chance to get large enough to chirp alot. Every now and then I will get one that starts to chirp. Nothing can really be done besides killing it....but finding the one cricket that is chirping in a bin full of crickets is a pain...so I just don't worry about it :)

They are in a container in my room, they wake me up at night.. I would put them somewhere else but my sisters aren't big fans of my habit leaving my room.

if you put tiny socks on them they won't be able to chirp anymore.

...You must be from the city LOL! I miss the sounds of frog, crickets, etc at night growing up on a farm. Maybe you could shove them into a closet at night or depending on temps put them outside in a garage?

I don't know how many crickets you have but you can take all the males out and cut their wings. Don't pull the wings off that can kill them and it's a waste of a cricket. Unlike cartoons, real life crickets use wings to make noise not legs.

I have around 3,000 crickets at a time and keep them far away from me, but I do have a pair of red eye tree frogs that are near me when I sleep. So when I feed them I usually use nothing but female crickets or take small scissors and cut the wings back on the males. No more chirping...

BTW, to sex your crickets scroll down the page in this link http://www.chameleonnews.com/year200.../crickets.html gives you a side by side photo of a male and female cricket.

Switch to roaches!

Glad I'm not the only one! Lived 15 yrs. in the country.... Best sounds for me to sleep to: Cricketts, Frogs, & Waves! :sunny:

Keep them in your garage, if its warm enough. Or only buy what your animal can eat at a time, so no extras in the tank to chirp.

Well I live in a city now because I'm going to university. But I grew up in a small northern town in Canada.

I don't know what bush you lived in but I doubt its as loud as having 500 crickets only 5 feet from your bed.

LOL....I was thinking the same thing. I grew up in the woods, but nothing compares to having your head next to a box of a few hundred crickets ;)

Like I said before, try to get the 3/4 grown crickets. You will hear less chirping than with the adults.

Not trying to be, you know sheety..... but why would you have 500 cricketts at one time for 1 BD and a trantula? Unless you order them, in that case could you order a smaller amount? Seems like the smell would be worse than the noise! :P How about younger cricketts.... gotta feed 2x the amount, but I don't think the juvies make as much noise! Hope you get it worked out! :sunny:

I grew up in the country, open windows and all. I hate cricket chirping. I found that if you order them 1/2 size, they don't tend to chirp. It was that or offer the crix some RAID.
The entire reason for ordering 1000 crix at once? Because they are DEAD CHEAP. I keep them in a rubbermaid and feed them cut potatoes. And as long as they don't chirp, I don't threaten them with the Raid spray.

Ew... the days of feeding crickets... anyway I just eventually got used to it.

i love the sound of crickets myself. but silkworms make no smell (other than cooking the chow if you are growing them up) and no noise... and your beardie and your T will love them :)

I ordered 3,000 1/2" crickets and by the time they hit adult size, I stilll had too many left. The noise was horrible sharing a room with them and the smell was even worse
