What is your favorite NATIVE reptile?
I know we always poll each other on what our favorite ball python morph, or favorite giant python is.....but what about at home.

What is your favorite reptile that is NATIVE to your home area?

My favorite has to be the Eastern Fence Lizard. It is one of the coolest animals in LA to observe.....and one of the most beautiful too IMO.

Share a picture too if you can find one ;)

    Garter snakes.. LOL

Pretty much the only snake/reptile in my area (that I'm aware of), although rubber boas supposedly live around here.

i love green anoles. such a simple and common little lizard but it just brings a huge smile to my face to see one scamper across the window sill or across the sidewalk in front of me.

i know a lot of my affection for them is probably because a green anole was the first herp i ever had for a pet when i was younger. my family went to a cabin in south carolina for a family reunion and there were these green lizards everywhere! (we were from virginia--no anoles.) my sister and i each caught one and brought them home for pets. later when i moved here (georgia) for college i got a pair and my love for herps was rekindled.

here is a photo of an anole i rescued on new year's eve several years back. she came down the chimney (i assume to get warm) but burned all her little toes on the hot coals. :( i took her in and all her toes healed fine, but without the last joint where the sticky pad was. she got around fine and i adapted her cage to be non-climber friendly. :)

I adore Texas Brown snakes. I'm hoping to catch some this summer when I learn to field herp!

Bullsnake. Hands down the best for size, attitude and personality. And the colors and pattern are great.

I love those things, me and my brother had 2 for a long time, crazy and lazy. I'd say my favorite would have to be bullfrogs only because you can go to a single pond and catch like 50. When i was tiny, id go to the pond on the golf course i lived next to and come home with my shirt, socks, and shoes filled with giant bullfrogs.

My favorite hands down is the Eastern Fox snake. It's a large, semi-aquatic ratsnake found here by the Great Lakes. They're very impressive to see in person, but highly protected now. They're on the verge of being listed as endangered :( I wish I could work something out with DNR where they give me a permit to keep and breed them, and they release the offspring back in the wild I produce :(

I love the black rat snakes. I used to occasssionally see them in the marsh, in my college years. (almost had one in my boots, to boot) All that black irridensence is just beautiful.

Although not a reptile, we used to have these cool green tree frogs that would come sit on our windows (in GA) at night and catch the bugs as they were attracted to the light. We had two for at least a year, and I was sad when they didn't return.

I love the eastern timber rattlesnake. Unfortunately I have not seen any in the wild hereabouts, but I know they're still out there.

    http://home.alltel.net/tesinc/EndSpecies.htm
I also love the garter snakes that make their home in the basement and inside the walls of our house. You can even find their shed skins in the attic crawl space!
For amphibians; it is tough! I adore our native frogs (leos, greens, bulls, the treefrogs) but my fave is the wood frog. They are just awesome and every spring I hike back in the woods and check out their vernal pools. I love toads too, and the spotted salamanders and others.. Ah I can't pick!

    Indigos and Black Racers.
I love them. I've always been facinated by black racers, so fast, so elegant then they're gone in an instant.
Native reptiles is what got me interested in the ones I keep. Love them all!

It's a tie between black rat snakes and blue racers, though I've never actually seen any wild around here. Snake wise all I've seen are garters and watersnakes for the most part. I plan to do alot more snake searching this spring and summer.

I've got to admit my favorite in this neck of the woods are the black rat snakes.

The ones down near my parents are abundant and fearless. As a kid we used to catch them at my grandmother's house - and both those and a hognose caught at Berkley Springs are directly responsible for my early love of snakes.

Haha.. just few of the good things about living in the tropics.

I`m quite amazed myself at just how common retics are. They could be found in urban areas, I almost steped on a roadkill once as i steped out of my car and it was in a housing area, although it was near a golf course.

And I forgot to mention water monitors, they`re absolutely in every river and drains!!

As for the leatherbacks, it`s sad that their number is still on the decline despite conservation efforts. A study done at a sanctuary showed that in the last decade, a majority of females were hatched and fewer landings are recorded each year.

I love redbelly snakes (Storeria occipitomaculata) which is Minnesotas smallest snake maxing out at just over 10 inches. Otherwise I like little eastern hognoses, that pig face is to die for.

Northern massasaugas are pretty cool, but rare. We have some of those here and there. I guess my favorite snake around here would be probably be a Red bellied Racer (I think that's what they are called), but they are impossible to keep due to the fact that they mostly eat slugs and baby frogs. Fast little buggers! They rise up half of their body off the ground when the move. Very neat to watch.

I've found that the Black Rats in the Nebraska/Iowa area seem to have the red/orange/pink color on them.
